History

The Arrancar (破面 (アランカル), Arankaru; Spanish for "To Tear Off", Japanese for "Ripped Mask") were beings who were derived from Hollows that had managed to tear off their masks and develop powers akin to the Shinigami of the Soul Society.

After escaping to Heuco Mundo, Sōsuke Aizen made a breakthrough in the creation of full Arrancar by using the power of the Hōgyoku. With it, he was able to turn powerful Hollows into Arrancar with the top ten strongest being his elite warriors among the Espada.

This saw Grimmjow taking several of his subordinate Fracción (従属官 (フラシオン), Furashion; Spanish for "Fraction", Japanese for "Subordinate Officers") into the world of the living without permission. Emerging in Karakura Town, he dispatched them to kill anyone with a notable spiritual pressure whilst he himself looked to kill the strongest which was Ichigo Kurosaki.

In this time, an Arrancar named Patros was dissatisfied working for Aizen and plotted a coup against him. He managed to sway Menis and Aldegor to his cause where they plotted to claim the Hōgyoku for themselves. Their rebellion saw them injuring Ulquiorra where they escaped into the world of the living in order to find a person said to be capable of unlocking the Hōgyoku.

Ichigo Kurosaki, Yasutora Sado and Uryū Ishida later came to travel to Hueco Mundo where they battled numerous Arrancar in order to rescue Orihime Inoue.

Afterwards, Aizen with his Espada and Arrancar then travelled to the world of the living for the purpose of sacrificing Karakura Town of its spirit energy. They were confronted by the Gotei 13 who engaged the Arrancar in battle as they sought to prevent an invasion of the Soul Society by their enemy.

Overview

In appearance, Arrancar tended to had been former Hollows that had ripped off their masks and gained a more humanoid form as a result. Only a remnant of their old mask was present on their bodies. The appearance of an Arrancar was determined by the kind of Hollow it originally was before its transformation. It was said that they were almost all Menos Grande Arrancar with the lower ranking ones sometimes emerging in a more human-like form. However, the Vasto Lordes always transformed into a human like Arrancar with these being the most powerful.

It was said that their skin was hard as steel allowing it to ignore simple sword strikes though more powerful blades were able to cut through it.

Arrancar were capable of a high-speed movement technique known as a Sonído (響転 (ソニード), Sonīdo; Spanish for "Sound", Japanese for "Reverberating Turn") that emitted a distinct vibrating sound and the equivalent of the flash step used by Shinigami.

A form of attack that could be emitted from their hands was the Bala (虚弾 (バラ), bara; Spanish for "Bullet", Japanese for "Hollow Bullet"). It was said to be less powerful offensive technique but its composition meant that it was twenty times faster. Thus, an Arrancar were able to fire a quick succession of these blasts at an enemy.

From their Hollow origins, Arrancar were capable of emitting a powerful Cero (虚閃 (セロ), Sero; Spanish for "Zero", Japanese for "Hollow Flash"; Viz "Doom Blast") attack as an energy blast directed at foes. Though powerful, Cero's took time to mature fully with underdeveloped ones being easily blocked by a Shinigami captain.

Similar to a Shinigami, Arrancars wielded Zanpakutōs though these were different than the versions in the Soul Society. This was because the true power of the Arrancar was locked within the blade and activating it allowed them to transform into their more powerful state.

An ability that Arrancar were able to activate was a transformation called the Resurrección (帰刃 (レスレクシオン), Resurekushion; Spanish for "Resurrection", Japanese for "Returning Blade"). This effectively was the return of their Hollow abilities that were merged with their humanoid bodies thus increasing their power greatly. It was said that an Arrancar's injuries were all healed when they took on their Resurrección form.

The strongest of the Arrancar were recruited into the ranks of Aizen's Espada with their numbers being based on strength. Outside them, the Arrancar's numbers was simply based on the time of their creation.
