History
Origin
The Circus of Strange or Le Cirque D'etrange was an extreme circus troupe that was known to operate in Gotham City. (Batman and Robin v1 #2) At some unknown point, they became involved in the machinations of Talia al Ghul and had ties to her Leviathan organization. (Batman Incorporated v2 #3) An event was known to had affected Lazlo Valentin that led to him becoming unhinged and adopting the name Professor Pyg. He became obsessed with abducting people who he converted into his Dollotrons and looked to spread a viral infection throughout Gotham. He began to finance his illegal experiments by selling the next generation of narcotics to small-time Russian gangsters. To achieve his goals, the Circus of Strange operated as footsoldiers in the war within the city. (Batman and Robin v1 #3) In time, they were known to had traded in next level mind control drugs with Russian people traffickers. (Batman and Robin v1 #2)
When Mister Toad was apprehended, the Circus struck at the GCPD headquarters in an attempt to free him which led to the death of four cops and six being seriously injured despite the intervention of Batman and Robin. Robin later on his own as he sought to locate the group where he was captured by Professor Pyg's Dollotrons. (Batman and Robin v1 #2)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. At some point, Professor Pyg and Phosphorous Rex both came to be admitted into Arkham Asylum where they participated n a riot alongside the other in-mates. This saw the rioters battling Batman who gained the unexpected of Joker during the attempted breakout. (Batman v2 #1)
The group were later attacking a circus in Gotham when Arsenal and Joker's Daughter arrived at the scene to stop them. Roy Harper came to be knocked out with Joker's Daughter going on a rampage where she badly injured the Circus of Strange but refrained from killing them. (Red Hood/Arsenal v1 #7)

- Professor Pyg : Lazlo Valentin was a male human who was a low rent extreme circus boss that became unhinged and adopted the name of Professor Pyg where he would convert people into his Dollotrons. (Batman and Robin v1 #3)
- Big Top : a bearded fat lady in a tutu who was strong. (Batman and Robin v1 #2)
- Mister Toad : a person who seemingly wore a toad-like costume. (Batman and Robin v1 #2)
- Phosphorus Rex : a pyrokinetic member of the Circus of Strange. (Batman and Robin v1 #2)

Notes
- Circus of Strange was created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely where they made their first appearance in Batman and Robin v1 #1 (August, 2009).
- In their notes, Morrison wrote, "“With Dick Grayson’s origins as a circus aerialist, it felt right to pit him against a group of circus themed villains in his first adventure as Batman."
