History

Clovis Bray was a human exoscience corporation that was formed by the House of Bray during the Golden Age. In the mid-Golden Age, the Clovis Bray Corporation was established by its eponymous patriarch, Clovis Bray I, a polymath and megalomaniac who sought to solve the "problem" of human mortality. Initially operating as a premier research and exoscience firm, the company rapidly became the primary engine of human advancement, spearheading the colonisation of the solar system. Under the elder Bray's cold and calculating leadership, the corporation gathered the system’s most brilliant scientific minds—including his own children and grandchildren—to pioneer revolutionary technologies such as Engrams, the SIVA nanites, and the early iterations of the Warmind project. While the public celebrated the firm for its high-end consumer goods and its role in terraforming hostile worlds like Mars, the corporation's inner workings were defined by an obsessive, unethical drive to preserve the Bray legacy at any cost. This foundational era saw the company move beyond simple industrial manufacturing into the realm of exoscience, setting the stage for a desperate expedition to the moon of Europa in search of a paracausal secret that could finally grant its founder the digital immortality he craved.

Dr. Willa Bray was the first person to successfully encode solid matter; this breakthrough led to the creation of engrams.

The organization was responsible for a number of cutting-edge scientific and technological breakthroughs throughout Golden Age including 'Transmission' and SIVA. While Transmission was intended to enhance the strength, speed, and intelligence of prospective colonists using nanomachines, SIVA used nanomachines to break down matter and reconstitute it in order to rapidly construct entire cities. With the Transmission project eventually being shuttered after it caused unforeseen side-effects in test subjects, Clovis Bray focused entirely on SIVA, which was subsequently completed and approved for deployment. During SIVA's development, Dr. Zarin Shirazi's confidence in SIVA's capabilities led her to neglect adding safety measures such as a kill switch. Following an incident where a test subject was made mute by the effects of SIVA, however, Zarin resolved to propose a failsafe for future nanotech development.

Upon SIVA's completion, the first SIVA replication chamber, Site 6, was built within the Cosmodrome in order to outfit the colony ships.

As the corporation’s influence swelled, Clovis Bray effectively transformed the Martian city of Freehold into a sovereign technocracy, where the boundaries between corporate interests and human evolution became indistinguishably blurred. The company’s secondary phase was defined by a ruthless "innovation at any cost" mandate, leading to the creation of the Warmind network, a sophisticated planetary defense system led by the super-intelligence Rasputin. While the solar system marvelled at the corporation's ability to "think" its way out of extinction, the internal culture grew increasingly predatory; researchers were pushed to the brink of madness, and ethical safeguards were discarded in favour of the Bray Evolution—a doctrine that viewed the human body as a flawed vessel requiring a total mechanical overhaul. This era saw the acquisition of vast lunar territories and the establishment of the K-1 anomaly research site, where the corporation first began to flirt with paracausal forces beyond human comprehension. By centralising the system's most vital infrastructure—from the SIVA construction nanites to the very data streams that powered human communication—Clovis Bray ensured that the future of the Golden Age was not just funded by the corporation, but entirely dependent on the whims of a single, ego-driven patriarch.

Following the visions given to him by the Darkness, Clovis Bray I founded a colony on Europa: the city of Eventide and a facility by the name of Bray Exoscience devoted to the Exo program. The researchers picked to work there had little care about ethics and the studies conducted often led to the deaths of some or all test subjects involved. Through the use of a Vex gate the company was able to collect radiolaria, which, exposed to the artifact of Darkness kept by Clovis on a space station orbiting the moon, allowed him to finally overcome the issue of Dissociative Exomind Rejection plaguing the first Exos. The gate became a problem when the Vex began spilling out of it and assaulting the colony, leading to many casualties. The facility was eventually shut down by Elisabeth Bray and Clovis-43.

The largest obstacle in the creation of Exos was Dissociative Exomind Rejection-the human mind was often unable to reconcile its new body. The solution Clovis Bray developed was two-fold: rebooting the mind immediately after transfer, and programming traditional human desires such as eating.

Owl Sector took a particular interest in the former facilities that were run by the Clovis Bray corporation.

Overview

In appearance, Clovis Bray was a Golden Age company that focused on research and technological advancements.

It was said that the goal of Clovis Bray was to destroy the world in order to remake it in their own image. During the Golden Age, they were noted to had brought people from Earth to other worlds and had paved the way for cities and colonies with children being raised on alien planets.

The company was said to had prided itself on its talent and liberality. From construction workers to researchers, they were said to had treated their staff royally.

Creations of the company included:

  • Engrams :
  • SIVA :
  • Warminds :
  • Exo :

On Mars, the Clovis Bray center located at the Skyline served as a hub to several company assets across Meridian Bay and beyond with a transit system connecting the various Bray facilities. The corporation was responsible for creating the large skyscraper that was known as the Dust Palace. Mindlabs was sites on Mars that were used to house the cores of the Warminds. Its main facility on Mars was famous for attracting talent.

After Venus was terraformed, it was noted that Clovis Bray had a headquarters situated at the Venus arcology.

At the ice covered moon of Europa, Clovis Bray established a colony known as Eventide during the Golden Age. This site also became the home of the Deep Stone Crypt facility that served as their exo-production facility and a place to study Clarity Control. Around the planet, Clovis Bray maintained an orbital platform called Morning Star that served as a support facility for the Deep Stone Crypt.
