A young rollerblading boy whose name literally means "energy", Genki was a champion Monster Rancher video game player. As a grand prize for winning a national championship, he got the newest copy of gaming technology and the new copy of Monster Rancher. He immediately went home to play the game, and upon activation, was apparently sucked into the game.

What really happened was, in the Monster Rancher world at the same time, the activation of a specific mystery disk by a young girl named Holly and a suezo simply named Suezo summoned Genki to the other world. This was a surprise to them both as Holly had thought the disk would unleash the legendary Phoenix from ages past, which would help battle the terrible forces of Mu.

Genki immediately agreed to help fight the dark forces and try to restore the Monster Rancher world by finding the legendary Phoenix with the help of Holly's magic stone. However, pulled with Genki into the world was a new copy of the game he had just won. The group tried to magically unlock the stone, hoping that perhaps it would contain the Phoenix, but it instead unlocked a monster that Genki named Moochi after a favorite food of his the monster resembled.

Along their journey, thanks largely to Genki's enthusiasm and spirit, the group gained the allies of Tiger of the Wind, Golem, Hare, while defeating Mu's Big Bad Four, including Pixie, Gali, Greywolf, and Naga. Genki's insistence on teamwork and friendship allowed Holly's band to defeat the much stronger creatures, and slowly turned Pixie into a friend. The later defeated evil general Durahan after crossing the great ocean with the help of the suezo Captain Horn.

Eventually Genki and the group managed to find and unleash the Phoenix to battle Mu, and in the process of releasing the Phoenix, it was discovered that Genki's heart was a piece of the legendary beast, as were Moochi, Suezo, Golem, Tiger and Hare. They sacrificed their individual indenties to resurrect the phoenix with the strength of all of their souls, which Genki then directed to make the legendary monster.

With the world restored and Muu defeated, Genki was returned home, where the spirits of his friends appeared to him and told him they would always be there for him, whenever he needed them.

A year later, Genki was again drawn back into the Monster Rancher world to help find and resurrect his lost friends, Holly's father, and help battle Durahan who was trying to obtain Mu's power, which had been locked into a mystery disk. Once again, at the end of the journey, Genki and his friends combined their souls to create the Phoenix and defeat the remaining essance of Mu, at which time Genki was sent home once and for all, and Holly and all his monster friends came with him.
