Biography

Origin

Emil Hamilton

During the mid-1970's, he came to be impressed with the discoveries of Lex Luthor and had long wanted to work alongside him. For a long time, he came to work on a magnetic field generator over the course of 20 years but as denied support from the government who felt his work was unsafe. Afterwards, he came to work for Hitek, Inc. where he developed a magnetic field generator where he used their computers to complete his 20 year work on the project. Afterwards, he was called to a meeting with Lex Luthor who revealed that he had bought Hitek, Inc. and now owned all its inventions which included Hamiltons field generator. Thus, he took it from him and offered him a financial compensation for the taking of his invention with Hamilton forced to return home. He then intended to destroy his creation rather than allow it to fall in Luthor's hands but was attacked by thugs who made threat on his life unless he handed over his creation. Despite his injuries, the police refused to be involved as there was no proof of Luthor's involvement in the attack and the Department of Defense also did not involved in the matter with them insisting his creation be destroyed due to it being dangerous. It was then that he was approached by Henry Wyatt from Compucon Services who had an interest in his creation and believed it was worth billions. Thus, they arranged for a demonstration of his invention and if successful then they would support him as well as provide legal services to regain control of his creation. After a few days, he completed his magnetic field generator and demonstrated it by encasing one of the attendees namely Charles Wilkerson in a magnetic shield that protected him from all manner of attacks. Unknown to anyone, a saboteur was present where they tampered with the machine causing it to short and kill Mr. Wilkerson. The people at the demonstrators then believed that the device was unsafe and that Hamilton had killed a man where in fear of his machine being taken from him went on the run. (Adventures of Superman v1 #424)

Villainy

After Brainiac 13's defeat, the prosthetic in Hamilton's arm made of the villains technology triggered a sleeper program. It sought to restart the Brainiac dynasty and began to influence the mind of Emil forcing him to adopt the persona of a masked supervillain called the Overmind. (Superman: Man of Steel v1 #125)

He eventually believed that his former friend Superman was a danger to the world. Thus, he decided to adopt the guise of a villain named Ruin in order to save the world from the Man of Steel. He was responsible for hatcing a plot to discredit Pete Ross as Ruin and cause the public to distrust Superman. (Adventures of Superman v1 #647)

In a desperate gamble, he triggered a self-destruct sequence in his armour that could only be stopped upon his death. This was because he wanted to leave Superman an impossible choice where he would be forced to kill Hamilton with the event being televised. This was so that he could discredit Superman and cause the public to lose trust in their hero. However, Superman managed to disassemble the armour into pieces and took them high in the sky where they detonated safely. With his plan thwarted, Hamilton's role as Ruin was revealed and he was placed under arrest whilst Ross was cleared of all charges made against him. (Adventures of Superman v1 #647)
