Chief doctor at the Queen's Hospital in London, Dr. Frank Mannering's patient was Larry Talbot, or at least he claimed to be. Dr. Mannering was stymied when he called the police station in Llanwelly and discovered that Larry Talbot had been dead for four years, not knowing that Talbot was in fact a werewolf who'd been accidentally resurrected by two grave robbers. But when Talbot insisted, Mannering decided to go up to Llanwelly and have a look for himself, taking Inspector Owen of Scotland Yard with him.

What they found was most unnerving. Talbot's crypt was empty, save for the body of notorious grave robber Freddy Jolly. Intending to have the chief inspector of the Llanwelly police return to London in the hopes of positively identifying Larry Talbot, Mannering was shocked to learn that while he and Inspector Owen were gone, Talbot had escaped from the hospital. Determined to find Talbot, Mannering followed him all the way to Visaria, arriving during the Fesitval of the New Wine to find Talbot trying to persuade Elsa Frankenstein to turn over the scientific notes of her father, Ludwig.

Mannering, who now believed that his patient was in fact a werewolf, hoped to persuade Talbot to return with him to London. Things changed when the Frankenstein Monster appeared, sending the townspeople into a frenzy. After things had calmed down, Mannering made a deal with pretty everyone in Visaria at the time regarding Ludwig's notes. To Elsa and the townspeople, he promised to use the information contained in the notes to destroy the unstable Monster; to Talbot, he promised to use the same information to drain off his life energy, ending his cursed life. Unfortunately for everyone involved, no sooner had he stepped into Ludwig's old laboratory than Mannering quickly was overcome with a seemingly insane desire to see Henry Frankenstein's creation at its full strength before killing it.

He charged the Monster up to its full power, and in the meantime, the full moon rose and the neglected Talbot transformed into the Wolf Man. Both monsters broke free of their restraints and got into a vicious fight, destroying most of the laboratory. Mannering and Elsa barely escaped as a vengeful villager, Vazec, dynamited the nearby dam, causing the mansion to be destroyed in the ensuing tidal wave.
