Mary Ellison was a British agent who was the lover of John Smith, and worked closely with him while he was undercover as Johann Schmidt in Italy during World War II. With MI6 penetrated by German spies, Vice-Admiral Rolland summoned Mary and Smith back to England to take part in a daring plan to root out the traitors. Mary hid aboard the Lancaster bomber that flew Smith and Morris Schaffer's team into Bavaria, parachuting out after the men. She met covertly with Smith, without the knowledge of Schaffer and the others. Her role in the plan was to take on the alias Maria Schenk, and pretend to be the cousin of a barmaid named Heidi Schmidt from Dusseldorf, who was actually the British agent Ethel.

She met her "cousin" in the Zum Wilden Hirsch, where she immediately attracted the attention of the Gestapo officer Captain von Brauchitsch, who became smitten with her. Using this to her and Ethel's advantage, she persuaded von Brauchitsch to escort her up to the Schloss Adler to apply for a job as a servant. Ethel came along. She was turned over to Anne-Marie Schwartz, Colonel Kramer's secretary and the head of the castle's female staff, who took an instant dislike to her. Ethel showed her to her room where she was provided with the various supplies she'd need to help Smith and Schaffer get into the castle, and then Ethel took the cable car back down to the village.

Smith and Schaffer ascended on a cable car, and were assisted in getting inside by Mary, who threw them a rope from a window. Once they were inside, Smith told her to come to the Golden Hall at a certain time. He and Schaffer departed. Von Brauchitsch stopped by and invited Mary to dine with him, quizzing her about her hometown, Dusseldorf, having grown suspicious of her. Mary lied and said she had forgotten a great deal about Dusseldorf in the interim, and von Brauchitsch seemed to believe her. After he took her back to her room, Mary proceeded to the Golden Hall to meet Smith as planned, and found him having just forced Olaf Christiansen, Edward Carraciola and Lee Thomas to give him the names of all of the German agents in Britain.

Von Brauchitsch, after finding various Nazi personnel knocked out and tied up, and other signs of forced entry, arrived not long after and got the drop on Mary, forcing her to drop her gun. She was taken into the next room by Anne-Marie, but used her martial arts skills to overpower the female Nazi and get her gun. Returning, she held von Brauchitsch at gunpoint, forcing him to surrender. She assisted Smith in injecting him, Kramer, Reichsmarschal Rosemeyer, the unconscious Anne-Marie, and a Nazi guard named Sergeant Hartmann with nembutal. She then helped Cartwright Jones round up the three traitors and herd them through the castle.

Following a failed attempt by the captive traitors to escape, which ended in their deaths at the hands of Smith, Mary joined him, Schaffer and Jones in taking the cable car back down to the village, where she was reunited with Ethel. The five of them stole a bus and drove to Oberhausen Airfield, where they were picked up by Colonel Wyatt-Turner and Wing Commander Carpenter. Following Wyatt-Turner's suicide after Smith outed him as a Nazi spy, the group flew back to England, with Smith announcing he wished to marry Mary.
