Biography
Professor Hiroshi Ochanomizu (Japanese: お茶の水博士, Hepburn: Ochanomizu-hakase)
By this point, Ochanomizu was a leading figure in the scientific community and the newly appointed Minister of Science, learned of the remarkably advanced robot's existence and sought it out. He attended a performance at the circus and observed the robot's capabilities and suffering firsthand. Acting on his belief in robot rights and his empathy, Ochanomizu negotiated the purchase of the robot from the circus proprietor, securing its legal freedom from Hamegg's ownership. After removing the robot from that abusive environment, Ochanomizu took him into his care. He then performed significant scientific procedures and upgrades upon the robot's internal systems. These actions included enhancing the robot's AI to grant it a full range of emotions and installing advanced morality protocols, effectively giving the robot a conscience. Ochanomizu formally adopted the robot, treating him as a son, and provided him a stable home, renaming him Atom. Professor Ochanomizu ensured the young robot was formally enrolled in school, integrated him into human society, and provided him with a nurturing family environment, essentially raising him as a surrogate human son. Ochanomizu's actions extended beyond personal care; he dedicated himself to fostering Atom's intellectual and emotional development, teaching him about ethics, justice, and humanity's complexities. He continued to refine Atom's abilities discreetly as the young hero began using his incredible powers—which included flight, super strength, and a range of extraordinary gadgets—to fight injustice, battle rogue robots, and defend both humans and robots from various threats and villains. In appearance, Professor Ochanomizu was consistently depicted as a short, portly, middle-aged to older gentleman throughout the original manga series.
