History
Pre-Crisis
Ungara was an inhabitable world located in Sector 2814 in the cosmos. (Green Lantern v2 #107)
The Guardians of the Universe later made an emergency call to Green Lantern Hal Jordan due to a planetwide disaster at Ungara. The disaster took the form of a comet that was on a collision course with the planet where he successfully managed to divert it. He then looked to inform the native Ungarans who mistakenly believed that Jordan had killed Abin Sur and stolen his power. In fact, Hal Jordan was thought to be the murderer of their champion. The Ungarans thus mistook Jordan for the renegade Green Lantern; Sinestro. Finally realising their mistake, the Ungarans apologized for their attack. After the comet was deflected, Jordan helped create a monument to his fallen predecessor. (Green Lantern v2 #107)
The planet-wide news of Abin Sur's death fragmented their society. This started a civil war which led to the creation of the plasma satellite, one they used to fire at their enemies. One side tried to defuse the weapon but instead detonated it. Ungara was thrown off its axis by less than one hundredth of a degree. One hundred million Ungarans perished in the planetary shift. The Ungarans sent out a military expedition to Earth to seize Hal Jordan's aid. Forcing Hal Jordan did not work; he had problems on Earth and did not know of the Ungarans' plight. He was later ordered by the Guardians to help the people of Ungara, but was unable to move the planet back to its original orbit. Tsunami's drowned three of Ungara's continents, leaving no survivors. Hal Jordan then tried breaking the ice and using molten lava which settled the planet into its new orbit. The Green Lantern Arisia Rrab was credited for returning the world to a habitable state. Arisia, along with Hal Jordan, polished a crystalline moon to act as a lens to focus the planet's sun. (Green Lantern v2 #149)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Ungara
Abin Sur was said to had left his home planet of Ungara during his time as a Green Lantern. Unknown to him, a woman he had engaged in a romantic relationship came to be pregnant with his son who she named Amon Sur. Both had awaited Abin Sur's return but he never came back and it was only many years later that they learnt that he died in his duty. (Green Lantern v4 #17)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Ungara
Sur came to find a single survivor of the crashed ship on Ysmault with this being a young girl named Ocula. After rescuing her, he decided to take her to safety back to Ungara. Unknown to him though, her time on the prison world led her to be infected by the demons from the ancient Empire of Tears. These left a deep impression on her and caused her mind to fall to darkness. Armed with powerful magic, he came to establish a Shadow Empire that operated in secret across the universe. (Green Lantern Corps v3 #39) It had expanded through the criminal shadow markets where Ocula used demons to bolster her forces whilst causing others to fall to the darkness that infected her. From Ungara's moon, she established this empire that worked in the shadows for countless years. (Green Lantern Corps v3 #40) The Guardians of the Universe were said to had become aware of the existence of the Shadow Empire and dispatched a covert lantern to investigate it. (Green Lantern Corps v3 #39)
