The Wraiths origins are not truly known except that they evolved from the Iratus insect sortly after the Ancients arrived in the galaxy. The creatures fed upon Humans and incorporated there DNA into their genetics which spawned the creation of the Wraith.

For a hundred years, the Wraith warred with the Lanteans driving them from there territories until only Atlantis was left. Sieging the city, the Lanteans submerged the cityship beneath the sea of there world and fled back to the Milky Way galaxy. Victorious, the Wraith would claim the galaxy and feed on the Human inhabitants. However, this diminished the Human population and required the Wraith to endure periodic hibernation cycles where they slept for centuries until the Human herds grew in number for a culling. This pattern was disrupted by the arrival of the Atlantis Expedition which prematurely awakened the Wraith who attempted to find Atlantis and the secret to intergalactic travel in order to reach a richer feeding ground - Earth.
