Merlin (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Merlin is a female anime and manga character who features in The Seven Deadly Sins.

Biography

Merlin (Japanese: マーリン, Hepburn: Mārin) was a female human born thousands of years ago in the city of Belialuin that was the capital of the wizards that had remained neutral in the conflict between the Goddess Clan and the Demon Clan.

News of the miraculous child's birth and her infinite magic came to reach the goddess race and the demon race both of whom sought to court the girl into joining their respective side. Her choice would have tipped the balance of the war to that side's favour. However, the inhabitants of Belialuin opposed this and refused to part with the child whose power they claimed to be their property. However, against the wishes of her people, Merlin decided to speak with the deities of the goddess and demon clans. Thus, she met with the Supreme Deity and the Demon King where she claimed that she would follow whoever gave her the best blessing. The Demon King gave Merin all the knowledge of the dark secret arts of the Demon Realm along with an immunity to the brainwashing and possession abilities of the goddess race. Meanwhile, the Supreme Deity gave her a protection against dark curses and the powers of the demon races Commandments. After these powers were granted, Merlin reneged in her arrangement with both gods and chose neither side. In anger, both gods unleashed their rage against Belialuin where they cursed it with fog and death for a thousand days leading to it being destroyed in fire and lightning. Despite this destruction, Merlin managed to escape harm and came to be the only survivor of the city of wizards.

It was shown that she was met by Meliodas 27 years ago when he served as a Holy Knight in Danafor. He had met her with the hope of finding a cure for the curse that had been placed on Elizabeth. Merlin suggested that they recreate the Coffin of Eternal Darkness in order to free the Ten Commandments in the hope of using the power of Zeldris to break the curse. Meliodas though came to refuse as he felt that such a measure was too dangerous and that Zeldris would never willingly agree to help them. Merlin hen decided to abandon this plan and search for another means of saving Elizabeth.

Around 21 years ago, she was noted to had taken on an apprentice in the arts of magic with this being Vivian though she had to always remind her charge of her habit of losing herself to rage.

During this time, she came to find herself in the Kingdom of Camelot where she hid herself among the crowds of people. It was then that she encountered a young boy named Arthur who showed incredibly promise. Merlin then decided to make herself the boy's mentor where she helped guide him in becoming king.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Merlin was a slim, attractive and tall woman who had three beauty marks below her right eye with her having long shoulder length black hair. Her outfits tended to be highly revealing with the open fur collared long coats that had heart shaped buttons whilst she had short shorts and thigh high boots. As a Holy Knight, she tended to wear concealing armour that hid her features where it resembled a long dress with her wearing high-heeled boots. It was revealed that her true form was that of a child of similar features with her having long black hair that reached the mid of her back. She was regarded as the Daughter of Belialuin that was a fearsome reputation to even those among the Demon Clan. Among the Seven Deadly Sins, she was known as the Boar's Sin of Gluttony and as the Crimson Boar with the tattoo of it being located on the left side of her neck. Merlin also came to be known as Britannia's Greatest Sorcerer due to her considerable magical talent.

Her reputation led to her being famous to the members of the demon race some of whom came to fear her.

On the surface, she was shown as being a very calm and passive woman who almost never cold her cool regardless of the situation. During their first encounter with Galand, she remained calm despite the fact that the demon was overpowering their team. In fact, during their fight she was thinking of strategies to counter her opponent. Exceptions to this were in extreme cases such as when she could not cope after Meliodas reverted to his former self or when Arthur was impaled by his own sword.

It was shown that she tended to refer to Elizabeth as 'big sis-sis' and had looked up to her.

Merlin had shown a motherly form of care towards Arthur who she treated as a son. Such was the depth of her care that she was deeply saddened over his death and it was noted that he was someone precious to her.

Powers and abilities

Such was her magical potential that the demon wizard Gowther came to be incredibly impressed with Merlin when she was a child.

Her inherent magical power was the ability known as Infinity (無限インフィニティ, Infiniti) that allowed her sustain her magic indefinitely until she dispelled them. She came to use this to enact a spell that froze her own time thus making her effectively immortal.

Among her techniques included:

• Absolute Cancel (絶対強制解除アブソリュート・キャンセル, Abusoryūto Kyanseru) : Merlin was capable of completely erasing a spell from existence by placing her hand over it. However, particularly powerful magic was difficult to fully erase and might only be temporarily stopped.
• Magic Cancel (魔力解除マジックキャンセル, Majikku Kyanseru) : a technique that allowed her to cancel any magic that had been cast on an individual. Merlin typically used it to cancel the effects of magical items in her own collection.
• Location (探知ロケーション, Rokēshon) : a power that allowed Merlin to find a person with her capable of extending its reach to cover an area of approximately the size of a city,
• Power Amplify (魔力増幅パワー・アンプリファイ, Pawā Anpurifai) : a spell capable of amplifying the magic of her allies thus making their techniques considerably more powerful.
• Perfect Cube (完璧なる立方体パーフェクト・キューブ, Pāfekuto Kyūbu) : an ability that she learnt from the demon world that denied entry to anyone except the cast. It surrounded a target area in a spell that reflected all attacks whether they were strong or weak back at the person inside.
• Shunkan Ido (瞬間移動しゅんかんいどう, Shunkan Idō; literally meaning "Teleportation") : a high level teleportation spell that allowed to cast to appear and disappear at will with Merlin able to move to precise locations and was able to teleport groups of people instantaneously.
• Wave Dragon (波竜ウェーブドラゴン, Uēbu Doragon) : using this spell, Merln was able to create many dragons made of water.
• Fire Storm (ファイアストーム, Faia Sutōmu) : Merlin was able to create powerful blasts of fire using this spell.
• Exterminate Ray (殲滅の光エクスターミネイトレイ, Ekusutāmineito Rei; literally meaning "Light of Annihilation") : a powerful disintegration beam that incinerated everything within its line of fire.
• Endless Whirl (終わりなき渦エンドレス・ワール, Endoresu Wāru) : with this spell, Merlin was able to create a vortex of wind of incredible destructive power that sucked everything around into the center.

She had her own Sacred Treasure that was known as Morning Star Aldan (明星 アルダン, Myōjō Arudan) that was a floating crystalline sphere. It was capable of channelling her magic and casting these as spells. Merlin was also able to place her soul within it in case her body was ever incapacitated.
