History
The Prometheans were an elite rank within the Forerunners that were noted for their trademark lethality. Around 10,000 years prior to the Halo Array's activation, the Prometheans operated as the elite force in the war against humanity. However, in the aftermath, political struggles affected the Forerunner Ecumene and the Prometheans were forced into exile. Thousands of years later, the parasitic Flood emerged which saw the Prometheans revived in to engage in the war against the parasite.
They decided to willingly allow themselves to be subjected to the Composer though the Didact's new form could not be converted by the process. It was said that no Promethean would refuse the procedure if it was the only way to defeat the Flood. Once composed, they accompanied their leader and began battling the Flood where they managed to inflict casualties on their foe. However, by this point, the Flood was simply too vast and the Didact came to believe that the only option was to increase his own forces numbers. As such, he decided to use the Composer on the devolved human populaces that the Librarian sheltered on the Halo's with the Didact feeling this was a suitable punishment for their crimes in the past. This led to the composed essences of the humans being added to the ranks of the Prometheans.
In 2557, the Shield World Requiem was discovered by the UNSC and the fractured remnants of the Covenant. Upon entering the giant structure, both factions faced opposition from the Prometheans that guarded the planetoid.
Catherine Halsey was curious on what the Prometheans could teach them. Through the slipspace artifact, Prometheans boarded the UNSC Infinity where they battled the personnel. Ultimately, the invaders were repelled but not before they managed to get Dr. Halsey.
After acquiring a piece of the Janus Key, 'Mdama took the injured Halsey and escaped from Fireteam Majestic through the teleportional abilities of a Promethean.
However, the Prometheans later turned against 'Mdama as they aligned themselves to serve Cortana causing them to turn against the Covenant forces.
Overview
Originally, the Prometheans were flesh and blood Forerunners that consisted of the elite Warrior-Servants of their kind. Composed Prometheans were able to move through space under their own power and did not require any form of life support systems. They were able to depart from ships and attack enemy craft where they used their arm mounted weapons to burn through enemy vessel hulls in order to force entry.
The fate of the Prometheans forever changed during the war against the Flood when they were subjected to the Composer. Through this device, their bodies were transformed into energy that were placed inside Forerunner constructs. Once composed, the living essence of the Promethean could not be returned to an organic body thus effectively trapping them in this state. Though mechanical entities, the composed Prometheans were not simple drones like the Sentinels or Crawlers but rather living intelligent beings within a construct body. In this state, they were able to retract the faceplate which revealed a skull made of energy. Prometheans intended to expose these faces in order to intimidate their foes. A Spartan described them as being Forerunner robots composed of hard light and battle armor that were ruthless as well as brutal.
Among the composed Prometheans, there were various types that included:
- Promethean Knight :
- Promethean Lancer : generally deployed as scouts and snipers though equally able to engage in close-quarter combat but were instead used for long range support where they surveyed the battlefield in order to inflict accurate and lethal fire on their enemy. Lancers were also equipped with an Autosentry to provide a quickly deployed hovering turret for support
- Knight Commander :
- Promethean Battlewagon :
A supporting unit within the Promethean were the Crawlers that were four legged constructs that were armed with various energy weapons. Watchers also provided tactical support with these machines controlled by a low-level ancillia. The constructs were normally deployed from the armored shell of a Promethean Knight and used hard light energy shielding to protect its allies. A further level of aid provided was the capacity to reform fallen Prometheans allowing them to bolster their lines. Though defensive, the Watcher was also armed with a boltshot allowing it to operate offensively as well.
Members
- Didact : a male Forerunner noted for being a brilliant military leader who had led the Prometheans for thousands of years.
