History

Enforcement Droid 209 (ED-209) was a bipedal robotic construct designed for urban pacification and intended for use as law enforcement. It was created under the direction of Omni Consumer Products Senior President Dick Jones. He intended to deploy them on the streets of Detroit and use them for law enforcement with one such unit being brought for a live public demonstration in the board room. A junior executive named Mr. Kinney was told to hold a gun at which point ED-209 demanded that he put the weapon down. The demonstration was supposed to had been completed when he dropped the weapon but the robot initiated a countdown before it opened fire. Despite attempts at stopping it, ED-209 opened fire and killed the defenseless Mr. Kinney who was desperately trying to save his life. The technical staff managed to pull the wiring that resulted in the enforcement droid shutting down but the tragedy led to the robot being considered a failure. However, it served as the impetus for the RoboCop program that was being spearheaded by corporate executive Bob Morton.

Television

  • In the RoboCop: The Animated Series, the ED-209 series was developed by Dr. McNamara who intended them to be the latest in crime prevention machines that were to be produced by OCP. However, due to the existence of Robocop, the need for ED-209 robots was dropped. The newer ED-260 models were more advanced but still had several defective elements within its personality. One element of its programming was not being programmed for failure making it persistent in its operations. Similar to the ED-209, the units contained blasters in its arms which were used to destroy its targets. (Episode: The Man in the Iron Suit) The ED-260 possessed a track based system allowing it to drop on its legs and drive through the landscape to search for its target. When reaching its destination, it returned to walker mode. In addition to the arm blasters, the unit was capable of launching the arms at a target which was propelled through a rocket. (Episode: A Robot's Revenge)McNamara developed a new improved ED-260 model, however, there was still personality problems which made it ineffective in combat situations. This unit was tested against McNamara's new OCP Powersuit being piloted Lieutenant Hedgecock who defeated the ED-260 in combat training. (Episode: The Man in the Iron Suit) The doctor produced at least three more ED-260 units which remained at his personal lab. These were reprogrammed by a Middle Eastern terrorist cell which attempted to assassinate a rival. They activated one improved unit which was sent against Robocop but was destroyed. When the cybernetic detroit cop arrived at McNamara's lab, he had to face two more ED-260's which he managed to defeat. (Episode: A Robot's Revenge)
