For other uses of this name, see Great Old Ones (disambiguation).

The Great Old Ones were ancient, godlike alien beings who dominated the earth and large portions of the universe- and will again. The Great Old Ones are from a variety of species, though a few are actually related by blood. What they all share (according to most) was a common rebellion or war against the entities known as the Elder Gods, a battle which the Old Ones lost.

Most of the Old Ones were banished or imprisoned- Cthulhu bound in deathless sleep within sunken R'lyeh, beneath the Pacific; Hastur trapped on a dark star near Aldebaran; Ithaqua restricted to the cold reaches of the Arctic and the Himalayas; and so on. However, when the stars are right, the Great Old Ones will be freed, cleansing the earth and ruling once more. Some also suggest that the Elder Gods had nothing to do with this, and that the Great Old Ones have bound themselves as part of a sort of cosmic hibernation.

The Great Old Ones are venerated as gods by humans and other species across existence. The Great Old Ones should not be confused with the Outer Gods (such as Azathoth and Nyarlathotep) or the Elder Things, which are different groups of entities.
