Deathbird led a small group of the Guard into Kree space to track down a Brood ship. Guard members in this mission included: Fang, Oracle, Smasher, and Starbolt. (Untold Tales of Captain Marvel v1 #2) The Guard's ship was attacked by dozens of Skrulls, and they fought them off, protecting Deathbird. Some Kree, including Captain Mar-Vell aided them. (Untold Tales of Captain Marvel v1 #1) The Guard, contained by the Kree, sought to fight their way free in order to be at Deathbird's side, Smasher trying to punch Marvel and getting knocked aside, but Deathbird ordered them to stand down. They revealed the nature of their mission to the Kree. (Untold Tales of Captain Marvel v1 #2) Weeks later, they saved a few surviving namely the Kree Mar-Vell, Una, and Yon-Rogg after they had fought the Brood. (Untold Tales of Captain Marvel v1 #3)

Members of the Imperial Guard including Gladiator, Manta, and Smasher were briefly pulled by the Nameless One into another dimension for a chaotic battle. (Tarot v1 #4)

Members of the Imperial Guard fought the X-Men Banshee, Colossus, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, the Phoenix Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine and Starjammers including Ch'od, Corsair, Cr+eee, Hepzibah, and Raza at the M'kraan Crystal, in order to stop them from rescuing Lilandra from D'ken and Davan Shakari. During the battle, Smasher traded blows with Colossus, was knocked aside by Wolverine, and was defeated by Ch'od. D'ken was rendered comatose and Lilandra took over as the new Majestrix. Members of the Guard in this mission: Astra, Electron, Fang, Gladiator, Hobgoblin, Impulse, Magic, Mentor, Midget, Nightside, Oracle, Quasar, Smasher, Starbolt, Tempest, and Titan. (X-Men v1 #107) The Guard lay unconscious as the battle resolved. (X-Men v1 #108) The Guard was stopped by Lilandra from killing the X-Men. Later the Guard watched the X-Men return to Earth. (X-Men v1 #109)

Lilandra sent the Imperial Guard against the X-Men (Angel (Warren Worthington), Beast (Henry McCoy), Colossus, Cyclops, Phoenix, Storm, Wolverine) on the moon to give the Shi'ar rights to slay the Phoenix. If the X-Men won, the Shi'ar would leave the Phoenix to them. A massive battle broke out and the Imperial Guard soon won. During the battle, Smasher was hit by Angel, then threw Angel aside after Oracle had stunned the mutant. Smasher later joined Starbolt and Oracle in trying to defeat Phoenix and Cyclops. Smasher (Izzy Kane)

Main Article: Izzy Kane
Isabel Kane in Avengers World v1 #2.

Isabel Kane was a female human born in the modern age as the granddaughter of Dan Kane who had operated in World War II as a superhero named Captain Terror. It was known that her father never got along with her grandfather with the two often getting into arguments. At some point, her mother had died and the young Izzy came to grow up at the family farm in Iowa. (Avengers v5 #1) She had intended to study as an astronomer where she wanted to learn more about space but then her grandfather became ill as he started to suffer from emphysema. This led to her deciding to stay on the farm and continue helping her grandfather along with tending to his care needs as it was expected he would die from his condition. (Avengers v5 #1) She was at the hospital when the doctors informed her that her grandfather would be passing away soon. (Avengers World v1 #2) On one day, she found a mysterious item that she took back to the farm home but kept it pocketed whilst she cared for her grandfather on the day. At night, whilst she was looking at her telescope into the night sky it was then that the item in her pocket began to speak to her and urged her to wear it. Upon wearing it, she was transformed into Smasher with the Exospex that she wore taking her to the Shi'ar homeworld of Chandilar. This saw her being assigned as a member of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard as a Subguardian where she began operating as a super-powered operative in space. She was gone for a month before returning home where she told her father about her adventures in space. It was then that she was told that her grandfather was dying and she spent time with him in his final moments on his deathbed. He urged her to become a hero and gave her a note from Captain America stating that he owed Dan Kane a favour. With that note, he wanted Izzy to use the favour and join the ranks of the Avengers. Overview

In appearance, Smasher was an identity held by a member of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. (War of Kings v1 #1) It was shown to be an identity held by multiple individuals. (War of Kings v1 #1) In fact, there were multiple Subguardians given the code name Smasher. (Avengers v5 #5)

One incarnation of Smasher was actually a Superguardian of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. There were around 43 Subguardian Smasher-class members all of whom waited to join the Shi'ar elite defensive structure where they were equipped with the Exospex. These synthetic tri-plated spectra-forms were actually organic constructs which meant that they were alive. They were capable of communicating with living beings and encouraging them to wear them. (Avengers v5 #5)

Once activated, the Exospexs accessed the astral archive and could link with known universal cartography. It could also access the Imperial Superguardian Exobase and receive datapacket streams through the Shi'ar Stargate network. This allowed them to access maps and access codes for the various powersets offered as upgrades by the Exospex such as Exo-Strength, Exo-Flight and Penta-Vision. Their connection to the Stargate network included activation of non-commercial stealth-grade models that were secretly placed in non-Imperial systems deemed as strategically important This allowed entry into the Shi'ar interstellar transportation network for the Smasher. An Exospex was able to provide briefings to its wearer and informing them of interstellar alerts. (Avengers v5 #5)
