Shadow Chronicles

In the distant past, the Haydonites were involved with the near extermination of the Invid species on their first homeworld through the use of extremely powerful weapons of mass destruction. Their reason for doing so is never truly explained except that they feared the power of Protoculture. Since that time, the Haydonites had been referred to as the Children of the Shadow and would not cease until all those that had embraced Protoculture were destroyed. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles) In later years, they were known only as an ancient race who had achieved an unsurpassed level of technology over the course of millennia and often represented themselves as emissaries of knowledge to other species where they provided their scientific expertise. (The Art of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles) Beyond the Invid, no one else knew of their true motivations and thus the Haydonites formed an alliance with the Robotech Expeditionary Force with the intention of providing them advanced Shadow technology to combat the threat of the Invid. In exchange for this aid, they asked that their existence not be revealed and they remained hidden from most of the members of the REF. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

During the Third Robotech War, the Haydonites had provided the REF with the Neutron-S Missiles as a weapon against the Regess's Invid forces on Earth as well as gave them the means to make use of Syncrho cannons and Shadow devices. They never informed the REF Earth reclamation forces of the true power of the Neutron-S warheads and even attacked the SDF-3 to prevent their findings from reaching the rest of the REF. However, despite their plans, the Invid Regess fled the Earth and destroyed the launched Neutron-S missiles heading to the planet which would have collapsed it into a black hole. Though the Invid had escaped, the Haydonites decided to start the next phase of their plans. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

Assembling a strike fleet, they attacked REF Space Station Liberty with the intention of finding the lost battle fortress containing the Protoculture Matrix. However, the ship was not present amongst the defending forces though despite this the Haydonites decided to destory them regardless and used hidden computer programs to disable the majority of their fleet which was devastated in the process. This was part of the Awareness's plan to eliminate the Protoculture addicts. The Haydonite leaders also discovered that JANICE the hybrid was within the REF forces and attempted to reclaim her to find the location of the Protoculture Matrix onboard the SDF-3 which had disappeared. In a desperate move, Captain Grant of the REF ship Icarus detonated the stockpile of Neutron-S missiles on Space Station Liberty in an effort to destroy the Haydonite fleet. After escaping, the warheads detonated and seemingly destroyed the Haydonite fleet though one of the leaders commanded that they initiate a space fold to escape. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

Its expected that the story will continue in Robotech: Shadow Rising that will serve as a sequel to this chain of events.

Overview

In appearance, the Haydonites true nature was masked by cloaks which only revealed a glowing red eye on their heads. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles) As part of their seemingly beneign nature as emissaries of knowledge and peaceful beings, Haydonite cloaks often resembled the red ambassadorial robes worn for diplomacy by other species. (The Art of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles) Beneath this facade, was the true nature of the Haydonites who were seemingly mechanical beings which simply consisted of a floating upper part of a humanoid body and a roughly domed shaped head where their single sensor eye was located. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

According to one member of the race, the Haydonites believed themselves superior to organic species and also thought that biological beings were no match to their mechanized might. In addition, individual members who were defeated by their enemies informed their goes that their victory meant nothing and that all beings that embraced Protoculture were doomed and that ultimately the Haydonites would prevail in the struggle. They believed that their victories over their enemies would mark a new epic for the Haydonite race. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

The ultimate authority amongst the Haydonites is the entity known as the Awareness which appears to be a form of computer mechanism. This large system had nodes present amongst the Haydonite ships and transmitted instructions to its servants with specific tasks that it had "forseen". According to it, those species that were addicts of Protoculture must be eliminated and gave this important task to its servants to accomplish. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

The insights of the Invid Princess Ariel indicate that the Children of the Shadow destroy entire worlds that use Protoculture. When asked for the reason for doing so, she replied that it is because they feared its awesome power. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

Technology

They were an interstellar species who made use of starships to travel space and had a working knowledge of Space Folds allowing them faster-than-light capabilities. In addition to their Wraith fighters, they also made use of mecha such as the Infiltrator for ground based combat. They also possessed a form of shielding technology protecting their ships from direct harm as an energy blast passed by it during the Battle for Space Station Liberty. Furthermore, they possessed sophisticated sensors allowing them to detect an approaching ship emerging from a hyperspace fold and could also detect electromagnetic signatures allowing them to pinpoint the location of JANICE. Their sophisticated abilities also allowed them to jam the communication systems of enemies though it was possible to work around the jamming though this only provided short range communications. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

The cybernetic race were masters of the so called Shadow technology which worked on shadow dimensional principles creating a field that supposely shielded the energy source of a ship. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles) The activation of such devices led to the formation of a fourth dimensional field which not only masked targets from ordinary electronic sensors but also Protoculture sensors though the target remained visible. (The Art of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles) Throough it, they were capable of creating advanced weaponry in the form of Synchro cannons and also cloak their forces through the Shadow devices. At first, they freely helped the REF develop this technology though they possessed a backdoor mechanism allowing them to disable any Shadow technology equipped ship, fighter or mecha thus rendering them inert or possibly overloading them which can cause the device to explode thus killing their users. They accomplished this through a special weapon known as a Disruptor wave which was a reddish energy beam generated from a flagship that sweeped the battlefield and infected enemy vessels. (Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles)

The most devastating weaponry available to them were planet killing devices. They used these devices previously on the first Invid homeworld and devastated it in the process. Another form of such weapons were the Neutron-S Missiles which were massive warheads that were so powerful that their detonation can create massive black holes that can destroy planets.
