A lich is an undead being, usually (but not always) a former wizard, who has undergone a special transformation into a distinct kind of undead. Liches retain the skills they had in life, often magnified by their undead state.

The transformation is effected through a special formula. Liches place their spirits in phylacteries that they often hide. As long as the phylactery survives, they may inhabit any suitable corpse in range after their body's destruction, transforming it into a replica of their original form. Most liches also have a freezing touch, and may possess unique salient abilities as well. Related creatures include the demilich, the arch-shadow, the psionic lich, and the Suel lich. Some more notable liches include Fistandantilus of Krynn and Azalin Rex of Ravenloft.
