History

The Unggoy (Grunts) were an small bipedal humanoid species that were native to the planet Balaho located in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Overview

In appearance, the Unggoy (Latin: Monachus frigus) were a squat race of xeno-arthropodal bipeds. It was presumed that they evolved from smaller amphibious primates. Compared to other bipeds, their hind legs were quite short with them being adapted more to clambering and crawling over rocky terrain rather than walking upright. Unggoy also had disproportionately large arms that were excellent for grappling and scaling, but often impeded movements through narrow corridors or attempts to manipulate small, delicate objects. The species had evolved a rigid exoskeleton lined with barbs and spikes covers large portions of their backs, arms, and legs in order to deter Balaho's voracious predators. An Unggoy possessed an elongated cranium that ended in a blunt, bony face, with low-set eyes and a small, straight-toothed mouth. Due to their role in the Covenant, many considered the Unggoy to be inherently unintelligent though in reality have proven to be remarkably intelligent, knowledgeable, and resourceful.
