Biography
Marshall D. Teach (マーシャル・D・ティーチ Māsharu D. Tīchi)
Blackbeard was formerly a member of the Whitebeard Pirates second division led by Portgas D. Ace. Shanks also warned Whitebeard that Blackbeard was becoming stronger than him and had only joined his crew to stay hidden behind the massive shadow of the Whitebeard name, until he became strong enough to make his move. This time came when Blackbeard murdered a member of the Whitebeard Pirates to obtain a certain Devil Fruit, thus prompting his departure from the crew, and Ace's hunt for him. Blackbeard was also the one who gave Shanks the scars around his eye, a long time ago. Shanks also tells Whitebeard to call back Ace on his hunt for Blackbeard, as he was concerned about the timing of a confrontation between Ace and Blackbeard. fter Luffy defeated Crocodile in Alabasta, Lafitte tried to nominate Blackbeard to become one of the Shichibukai to take Crocodile's place, but in order to be accepted, Blackbeard must first build up a fearsome reputation.
Blackbeard happened to be in Jaya, at the same time Luffy was. Both Luffy and Blackbeard seem to strike up a rivalry when they nearly got into a fight over how they like or dislike one of the island tavern's food. However, not long after that, he gave Luffy a friendly speech about how pirates should never stop dreaming[2]. Despite their similarities (and comical contrasts), it was revealed in the Jaya arc that Blackbeard was looking to take out a strong pirate to make a name for himself - and he chose Luffy after learning of his 100 million Belli bounty at the time. He however failed to catch them as they were blasted aside by the knock-up stream which took the Straw Hats to Skypiea. After the events at Enies Lobby were publicized and the bounties of the Straw Hat Pirates raised, Blackbeard and his crew have decided to once again actively pursue the Straw Hats. However, Portgas D. Ace caught up to Blackbeard just as he was about to set sail off Banaro Island. Aside from avenging his crewmate, Ace reveals to Blackbeard that he's Luffy's brother and vowed that Blackbeard will regret it if he lays a single finger on Luffy. The two pirates engage in a furious battle, with Blackbeard victorious and being granted the rank of Shichibukai. It has recently been revealed that Ace has been sent to Impel Down after his defeat. ackbeard. After leaving Whitebeard's crew, his pirate crew pillaged (and, ironically, liberated) the Drum Kingdom, leaving its king, Wapol, to flee.
Overview
Personality and attributes
Blackbeard is very similar to Luffy in his desire to pursue his dreams and even encourages Luffy when they meet in Jaya. Blackbeard also treasures his crew and will give his own life to protect them, as he demonstrates when he shields them from Ace's fire attacks. And despite him no longer being in the Whitebeard crew, he still seems to respect Ace, by calling him "Commander" and scolding his crewmates for foolishly attacking him, claiming that they were "not ready" to face him, indicating that he has a high viewpoint on Ace's power. He also asks him multiple times to join his crew, despite his rejections. Blackbeard is also very hearty and cheerful, as he happily greets Ace when they meet again as if they were old friends (even though he likely knew Ace had arrived to kill him). He also highly respects Luffy, honoring him for enduring Bellamy's taunts in Mock Town and believed that 30,000,000 belli seemed to be too low for "a kid of that ambition."
He was not afraid to kill those who stand in his way and has proven to be an exceptionaly ruthless opponent in battle. Blackbeard will also kill if it furthers his own agenda, as he has done to gain the powers of the Yami Yami no Mi; this resulted in him breaking one of the Whitebeard Pirate codes, never kill a crew-mate which is one of the reasons why Ace went after him.
Powers and abilities
Blackbeard has proven to be an extremely strong pirate. He possesses incredible natural strength, evident of his massive build, and similar endurance as he shrugged off one of Ace's attacks. When he gave Red-Haired Shanks the scars on his left eye and killed the fourth commander of Whitebeard's fleet, he had not eaten a devil fruit at the time, indicating even his basic strength is impressive enough without the aid of his powerful Devil Fruit. Ace himself stated that Blackbeard nearly broke his neck from a single attack.
Blackbeard has eaten the Devil Fruit Yami Yami No Mi (Dark Dark Fruit). With it, he can become and control darkness, and also manipulate gravity by creating and spreading a black substance. Teach demonstrates that the "darkness" is a gravity or void which devours anything, able to pull in (much in the manner of a black hole) and crush the surrounding town into a pile of wood. Thanks to the Yami Yami No Mi, Blackbeard's powers were strong enough to expand the black substance in which he controls gravity, to surround half of the island of Banaro and hold back Ace's giant fireball that covered the other half of the island. Blackbeard also showed the ability of creating a vortex with the same properties as a gravitational pull. Due to the Yami Yami no Mi's gravitational ability, Blackbeard, unlike every other Logia user, cannot let attacks simply pass through him, meaning he takes damage like any human would, and stating himself that he absorbs "much more pain than a normal human." However, Blackbeard states that the risk this presents is well worth the advantages the fruit bestows upon him.
The second, and most frightening power of the fruit is to nullify other Devil Fruit abilities through physical contact, allowing Teach to physically hit Ace. Teach states that this is because the Yami Yami no Mi truly holds the power of the devil and that his gravitational power allows him to absorb the "entity" of the Devil Fruit users.
