After the Great Clash of Monsters, Googam looked to claim Monster Island for himself with him being opposed by the Mole Man. It was then that their clash was interrupted by the arrival of the Thing and the Human Torch. After receiving the Multisect, the Thing looked to find clues as to the possible survival of Reed and Sue somewhere in the Multiverse. A message delivered to him showed that a means of travelling realities resided on Monster Island where he travelled with the Human Torch. The two heroes were attacked by the monsters in order to decide who was going to be their leader. They were saved by the intervention of Doctor Doom whose power led to the monsters anointing him as their new leader. Doom then commanded that his political rivals be removed with the monsters taking the Mole Man and Googam away. (Marvel 2-In-One v1 #1)
