Biography
Genji Shimada (Japanese: シマダ・ゲンジ Hepburn: Shimada Genji) was the son of Sojiro Shimada and the younger brother of Hanzo. They were the sons of the head of the Shimada family that were a clan of assassins who were established centuries ago where over time they built a vast criminal empire from their homestead in Hanamura. This allowed them to grow in power as they profited from lucrative trade in arms and the sale of illegal substances. Genji himself grew up in a life of luxury and privilege where he had little interest in his family's illegal activities with him instead excelling as well as enjoying his ninja training. During these year, he spent much of his life indulging in a playboy lifestyle and living carefree. This led to many within the clan considering him a dangerous liability and they came to resent his father for both coddling as well as protecting him. After his fathers untimely death, it was Genji's older brother Hanzo who demanded his younger sibling take a more active role in their late father's empire. However, Genji came to refuse as he wanted little part in it with this enraging his brother. The tension between the brothers came to erupt in a violent confrontation with the two battling one another. Hanzo proved to bet he victor where he seriously injured Genji and believed he had killed his younger brother. In reality, Genji had survived though was on the verge of death with most believing he was dead. It was during this time that he was discovered by Overwatch who rescued the badly wounded man and he was treated by Dr. Angela Ziegler. Within the young man, Overwatch saw much potential and that he could prove to be a useful asset in their operations against the Shimada clan. In exchange for his aid, Overwatch offered to rebuild his body and Genji accepted where he went through an extensive process that turned him into a cyborg. This enhanced his natural speed and agility as well as augmented his own ninja skills thus transforming him into a living weapon. Genji then set forth with the goal of dismantling his family's criminal empire. Over time though, he came to feel increasingly at odds with himself as he was conflicted over his body as he was repulsed by his mechanical form and could not come to terms with being a cyborg. After completing his mission, he abandoned Overwatch and went out into the world in a search for meaning where he wandered for many years. It was then that he crossed path with a Omnic monk named Zenyatta who offered to teach him peace and wisdom. Initially, Genji came to reject these teachings but the monk would not be deterred and continued to aid the cyborg. In time, Genji relented and he came to see Zenyatta as his mentor and learnt from his tutelage where he learnt to reconcile his existence as both a man as well as a machine. He came to accept that whilst he was a cyborg that his human soul remained intact where he saw his new form as a gift that afforded him a unique strength. Feeling liberated for the first time, he went forth into the world in finding the next path in his life.
