History

The Bacchae were an ancient sisterhood of female warriors that were formed by Hippolyta of the Amazons. (Fantastic Four v3 #21)

During that era, she and her fellow sister Amazons were known to instigate wars within the various lands whereupon they would attack such regions. In the midst of these attacks, Hippolyta was known to had female children kidnapped who were taken back to her island where they were raised to be faithful warriors. Thus, this gave rise to the Amazons where Hippolyta served as their queen and she named her followers as the Bacchae. This pattern of behavior and arrangement continued for many years until the arrival of Hercules on Themyscira where he arrived alongside other heroes such as Jason, Theseus and Telamon. Together, the group wiped out the Amazons during their quest to capture their queen's golden girdle. Theseus ended up trying to kidnap the Queen of the Amazons only to capture her sister Antiope instead who had dressed herself up as Hippolyta in order to protect her.

Following this time, Hippolyta decided to re-start the Bacchae cult in order to advance her cause in the modern age as she was immortal. Thus, she began having female street people and runaways being inducted into the Bacchae whereupon they were provided with both weapons as well as fighting skills. This led to the creation of the modern incarnation of the ancient Bacchae who were former associates of the Golden Horde. As a result, they sought to get their revenge against Susan Storm for interfering in their affairs.

Staying true to their heritage as worshippers of Bacchus, the Olympian god of wine and song, the Bachae started a number of nightclubs and discotheques renowned for their love of excess. The clubs were part legitimate business operation, part front from which they ran their underworld activities. The Bacchae were the proprietors of Club Danae, a New York City disco known for its outrageous parties. They considered it their turf and did not approve of any rival gang encroaching on their territory. When several members of the Golden Sword gang were spotted in Danae, the Bacchae took offense. Considering it an act of trespassing, they fought and captured them, planning to kill them in an alley outside their club. Just as the Bacchae were getting ready to slay their rivals, the intergalactic bounty hunter Bounty intervened, even though she herself was on the run from the Technet, with Franklin Richards in tow. Not willing to let anyone get murdered, she stopped to help the Golden Sword gain the upper hand in battle. Upstaged and outgunned, the Bacchae fled. (Fantastic Four v3 #7)

Afterwards, they created a private club in New York called Tartarus that served as a front for their operations and allowed them to be based at the heart of Wall Street. To outsiders, it was seen as a pleasure palace for international business elites such as the Hellfire Club. They later looked to expand their operations and control all Mutant-owned businesses in the downtown area. The Bacchae attempted to conduct a kidnapping only to be thwarted by the X-Men. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #451)
