History

The Brethren Moons were large entities that comprised the Necromorph infection that were also known as the Brother Moons or Blood Moons. Each were the source of the signal that were generated by the Markers. Their origins were largely unknown though it was known that they were moon-sized entities that travelled the galaxy in the search to consume all forms of organic life that they encountered. This was achieved by them encounters with the Markers that were sent into space. Such processes begin by sending out the Black Markers through space and landed on worlds rich in organic sentient life. Around 65 million years B.C.E., a Black Marker within an asteroid crashed into the Yucatan Peninsula on Earth. It was not known whether this was planned or accidental though some such as Jacob Danik believed that the Markers actually were responsible for encouraging the development of intelligent life on worlds. Upon landing, the Moons generated an electromagnetic signal that was broadcast by the Markers that began to mentally affect intelligent beings creating the effect of dementia within such individuals. Those affected suffered from a compulsion to replicate the Markers by artificial means. As intelligent life evolved, those that encountered the Marker would learn that they offered near limitless electromagnetic energy that could be harnessed. This combination of compulsion and limitless energy led to the drive to create copies known as the Red Markers. These replicas were manufactured throughout the territory of the intelligent species and their signal leads to the reanimation of dead tissue into the Necromorphs. These chain of events were designed to bring about a Convergence Event whereby all the organic life on a planet was forced to join with the Markers in orbit to form a new Brother Moon.
