  • Real World: January 27. The Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps are liberated by the Soviet Army.
  • Real World: March 3. At the German Ohrdruf military testing ground, a possible atomic test blast occurs.
  • Real World: March 7. Allied forces seize the bridge over the Rhine at Remagen, Germany, giving them a passageway into the heart of Germany.
  • Real World: April 12. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies in office, and is replaced by Harry Truman.
  • Real World: April 28. Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci are killed by Italian partisans.
  • Real World: April 30. Hitler and his mistress Eva Braun commit suicide as the Soviets invade Berlin.
  • Real World: May 3. Wernher von Braun, German rocket scientist, and 120 of his subordinates surrender to American forces. They will later assist the U.S. space program.
  • Real World: May 5. Amsterdam is liberated by Canadian forces. A Japanese balloon bomb explodes in the woods near Lakeview, Oregon, killing five children and a woman as they inspected it.
  • Real World: May 8. V-E Day- Nazi Germany officially surrenders, and World War II ends in Europe.
  • Real World: May 30. Iran demands that Soviet and British forces leave its territory.
  • Real World: July 16. The first test (the Trinity Test) of an atomic bomb is conducted by the U.S. government at the Alamogordo Bombing Range in New Mexico.
  • Real World: July 26. Churchill resigns as Prime Minister of the U.K., and is replaced by Clement Attlee. The Potsdam Declaration demands that Japan unconditionally surrender.
  • Real World: August 6. The U.S. drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, decimating the city and ultimately causing the deaths of 140,000 people.
  • Real World: August 9. The U.S. drops a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, killing over 75,000 people.
  • Real World: August 15. Japanese Emperor Hirohito announces the surrender of Japan to the U.S. over the radio. In America, this becomes called V-J Day. As a result, Korea gains its independence.
  • Real World: August 17. The independent Republic of Indonesia is declared, dismaying the Dutch.
  • Real World: November. ENIAC, the first general-purpose electronic computer, is completed.

Undated Events

  • Amalgam: The K-Bomb, developed by Lex Luthor, allows the United States to win in World War II. However, fallout from the explosions insinuates itself into Earth's atmosphere. (Super-Soldier #1)
  • DC (Generations): The Gotham Project completes the first atomic bomb. [Batman] and [Captain America] join forces to defeat the Joker and the Red Skull. The Joker vanishes in a nuclear explosion; he is first taken prisoner by the Nazis, then by the Soviets. The Red Skull's fate is unknown. (Batman & Captain America, Superman & Batman: Generations)
  • Real World: A collection of Gnostic texts is discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt.
