  • Real World: July 10. The first commercial communications satellite, Telstar, is launched.
  • Real World: September 27. Silent Spring by Rachel Carson is released- the book is credited with inspiring the modern environmentalist movement.
  • Real World: October 14. A U.S. spy plane discovers that Soviet nuclear missiles are being installed on Cuba. This discovery sparks the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  • Real World: October 22. U.S. President John F. Kennedy announces the presence of Soviet nuclear missiles on Cuba in a televised address. Kennedy warns that any nuclear attack from Cuba would be treated as an attack by the Soviet Union, and that the U.S. would respond accordingly. Kennedy also initiates a "quarantine" to prevent Soviet vessels from shipping further weapons to Cuba. The tense stand-off that follows leads to fears of nuclear war.
  • Real World: October 28. After the U.S. agrees to remove its nuclear missiles from Turkey, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev announces that the Soviet Union will remove its missiles from Cuba, ending the stand-off.
