  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4061 BC (III 3001). Bilbo Baggins leaves the Shire, leaving his ring behind. Gandalf begins to believe Bilbo's ring is the One Ring, and the Rangers double their number of guards on the Shire. Gandalf asks Aragorn to help him track Gollum. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4058 BC (III 3004). Gandalf makes the first of several regular visits to Frodo Baggins that continue over the next four years. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4054 BC (III 3008). Gandalf makes his last visit to Frodo Baggins in the fall. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4053 BC (III 3009). Gandalf and Aragorn begin hunting for Gollum; their search takes them to Anduin, the Mirkwood and Rhovanion over the next eight years. In the meantime, Gollum is captured by Sauron, and Arwen is summoned by Elrond back to Imladris for her own protection. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4045 BC (III 3017). Gollum is freed by Sauron, and leaves Mordor, only to be captured by Aragorn and taken to Thranduil. Meanwhile, Gandalf reads the scroll of Isildur, confirming that Frodo Baggins has inherited the One Ring. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4043 BC (III 3019). The Fellowship of the Ring breaks apart. The War of the Ring, the defeat of Sauron, the destruction of the One Ring and the fall of Barad-dur. Aragorn becomes King Elessar of Gondor and marries Arwen. (The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King. Date derived from Tolkien's footnote in a letter, written in 1958, stating that the gap between the fall of Barad-dur and modern times was "about 6000 years.")
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4035 BC (IV 7 (SR 1427)). Samwise Gamgee replaces Will Whitfoot as Mayor of the Shire. Peregrin Took marries Diamond of Long Cleeve. King Elessar makes the Shire a free land under Gondor's protection, and forbids Men from going there. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4028 BC (IV 14 (SR 1434)). Peregrin Took becomes the Thain of the Shire. By edict of King Elessar, the Thain and Mayor of the Shire and the Master of Buckland become counsellors to his kingdom. Samwise Gamgee is re-elected Mayor of the Shire. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4021 BC (IV 21 (SR 1441)). Samwise Gamgee is once again re-elected Mayor of the Shire. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4014 BC (IV 28 (SR 1448)). Samwise Gamgee is yet again re-elected Mayor of the Shire. (The Return of the King)
  • Lord of the Rings: c. 4007 BC (IV 35 (SR 1455)). Samwise Gamgee is re-elected Mayor of the Shire again; he asks Thain Peregrin Took to make Fastred Warden of Westmarch. Fastred and Elanor move there and settle at Undertowers. (The Return of the King)
  • Christianity: October 23, 4004 BC. According to the Old Testament and the calculations of Archbishop James Ussher, this is when the Creation occurs.
