Biography
Hartley Winterbottom was a male human born in Somerset in the modern age. Originally, he was a scientist working for MI6 and went by the codename of Agent X. During this time, he had a close friendship with Stephen Bartowski. In this time, Winterbottom came to be the first human test subject of the Intersect with the intention of it helping him to maintain his cover identity which was that of Russian arms dealer Alexei Volkoff (Russian: Алексей Волков). However, a malfunction caused Hartley to believe he had actually become Volkoff although some subconscious memories seemed to linger in his mind. Despite that, the Intersect's use slowly corrupted his mind he began losing all memories of his life as Hartley and assumed that Agent X was a threat to the organization he ran. Volkoff was the reason Mary Bartowski left her family in 1991 as she was assigned by the CIA to bring down his network. (Episode: Chuck Versus Agent X)

As Alexei Volkoff was a dangerous arms dealer that was distinct from his true personality of Hartley Winterbottom. (Episode: Chuck Versus Agent X) He became wanted for conspiracy to kill United States nationals, to murder, to destroy buildings and property of the United States, and to destroy the national defense utilities of the United States.
