Biography

Alkhema was constructed by Ultron-13 as a second attempt to create a mate with her being based on the brain patterns of Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse). In the end, she ultimately betrayed Ultron to the West Coast Avengers. She is different from Ultron; she desired to kill all humans individually rather than en masse like Ultron. She first went up against the Avengers shortly after being constructed, when she attacked a weapons center. (Avengers West Coast v1 #90) She was defeated but managed to escape. She later would go on to betray Ultron. (Avengers West Coast Annual v1 #8)

She intended to strike against the Avengers and eliminate mankind in an effort to spite Ultron. As Alkhema-2, she secretly took over the Wakanda Design Group with the Black Panther investigating but he was defeated by the robot. This attracted the attention of the Avengers who arrived on the scene to fight with Alkhema. Despite her power, she was ultimately defeated by the actions of the Scarlet Witch leading to her being imprisoned. (Avengers v3 #19) She was later freed by her robotic War Toys that allowed her to escape captivity. (Avengers v3 #21)

After a defeat of Ultron, she salvaged the set of brain patterns based after Hank Pym, the Wasp, the Vision, Wonder Man, the Scarlet Witch and the Grim Reaper from the rubble of Ultron's Slorenian base, where she built her Robos (War Toys and Bio-Synthezoids). However, she was seemingly destroyed at Thebes, when Hawkeye (Clint Barton) fired an "anti-metal" arrow into her.

After Ultron's defeat, she came upon the ruins of his lair in Slorenia where her War Toys sifted through the devastation and found six brain-patterns that her creator had intended in the creation of a new robotic race to take over the Earth. With them in her hands, she decided to make use of them for herself for her own schemes that were separate from Ultron. (Avengers v3 #22)

She came to be restored and formed a group called the Opus Futurae with her intending to wipe out mankind. During this time, Arno Stark began an initiative to curtail artificial intelligences. Whilst this happened, Alkhema and her followers struck at a top secret facility in Siberia where she freed the security robots from the human guards. She then claimed a bio-chemical weapon that would kill all organics with her actions causing the security robots to turn against her where they triggered the self-destruct system. Only Alkhema survived the explosion where she vowed to continue her mission in conquering the world. (2020 Iron Age v1 #1)

Personality and attributes

  • Roy Thomas recounted that "I wasn’t wild about the first [bride of Ultron] … so I came up with Alkhema (from alchemy, of course)… and used the name War Toy which I’d used for a robot in a story I had Tony Isabella write for Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction years ago." (Ultron: The Black Sheep of the Avengers Family)
