History

The Alpha Flight was a team of heroes created by Department H that consisted of superheroes tasked with defending Canada. (Alpha Flight v1 #1)

Its creation stemmed from an earlier effort made by Dr. James Hudson who had formed a team of superpowered individuals called the Flight. Their first and only mission was to combat the efforts of Egghead who was attempting to establish himself as an international terrorist who led a group of villains operating in Canada at the time. The mission saw the death of several members of the team with the Flight being disbanded. (Alpha Flight Special v2 #1)

A week later, the Prime Minister met with Vindicator only to inform him that they were disbanding Department H and Alpha Flight. Later on, a threat emerged at Parliament Hill when Tundra of the Great Beasts was awakened by a human agent in the world. The anomaly being generated saw Vindicator investigating the scene where he made a call to gather Alpha Flight once again in order to combat the threat. (Alpha Flight v1 #1)

The Canadian government later resumed its funding of Alpha Flight, establishing for the team a headquarters on Tamarind Island off British Columbia. (Alpha Flight v1 #29)

Later, Department H was reinstated by the Canadian government at unprecedented levels of funding. The Department sponsored many institutions, including an orphanage called Hull House. It also formed a new Alpha Flight, with an inexplicably teenaged version of Guardian leading the team. (Alpha Flight v2 #1) In reality, Department H was involved in many clandestine and criminal activities, unknown to Alpha Flight. General Clarke was the administrative head of Department H, who operated a hidden agenda and employed brainwashing techniques and Epsilon Flight guards to apprehend and coerce suspected traitors within Alpha Flight. It is unclear whether he had the official sanction of the Canadian government. Eventually, Clarke was opposed by Alpha Flight, but died a hero when Zodiac invaded Department H, so his crimes were never prosecuted. (Alpha Flight v2 #12)

Alpha Flight sought to impede the progress of the supremely empowered Michael Pointer, but were decimated by his multitude of powers. (New Avengers v1 #16)

During the Chaos War, Guardian, Vindicator, Shaman, and Marrina Smallwood returned from the dead after Amatsu-Mikaboshi's victory in the death realms. They reunited with Aurora, Northstar, Sasquatch, and Snowbird when the Great Beasts appeared on Earth. They fight the Great Beasts until Amatsu-Mikaboshi appears and impales the Great Beasts. (Chaos War: Alpha Flight v1 #1)
