Biography

Origin

Lonnie Machin

He responded to complaints in the newspaper by attacking the offending sources, such as the owner of a factory whose byproduct waste is polluting local river water. (Detective Comics v1 #608)

After being caught, Lonnie was locked away in a juvenile detention center. However, during this period of incarceration, Lonnie operated as a computer hacker known by the name of Moneyspider. In this guise, he stole money from large corporations and channeled it to the third world where he believed it would do more good. This scheme was foiled by Tim Drake, on his first solo case prior to becoming Robin. (Detective Comics v1 #620)

After several inmates from Arkham Asylum were released, Lonnie broke from the reformatory and resumed his Anarky persona to fight common crooks. (Batman: Shadow of the Bat v1 #16) However, after learning how bad the situation was, Anarky decided that Batman was indirectly responsible for the chaos in Gotham. As he started planning to take Batman down, the Scarecrow started a city-wide plan to spread fear. Anarky took it upon himself to bring down Batman and the Scarecrow. (Batman: Shadow of the Bat v1 #17) He almost succeeded on his plan, but he was dosed with Scarecrow's fear toxin and he was unable to capture them, although he saved one of Scarecrow's minions from a certain death. Anarky was then warned by Batman to never try to fight him again, but he was not taken back to the detention center. (Batman: Shadow of the Bat v1 #18)

Anarky saved the JLA from being captured by the Point Men and led them back to his headquarters. The JLA needed to return to their Watchtower, but the nearest teleport pad was being guarded by the Point Men and the Agenda, so Anarky agreed to let them use his experimental teleport pad. He admitted to working on a teleport system that would let him break into the Watchtower, but still needed acknowledgement codes. Steel provided the codes so the JLA could use the teleport pad, but did not tell him they were temporary codes that would expire after the JLA used them once. (Sins of Youth: JLA, Jr. v1 #1)

Six months ago, he went to the broken remains of his parents house that were destroyed in the Great Gotham Earthquake. (Anarky v2 #1)

He came to one of many forced to leave the devastated Gotham where he had to establish a new home and base of operations in Washington, D.C. (Anarky v2 #1)

The Green Lantern was about to claim the Power Ring back but Max came to inform Kyle Rayner of the threat posed by the Aberration. He was ultimately convinced to help Anarky to save all reality from this threat and upon gaining consciousness the two worked together in defeating the threat. It was then that Green Lantern wanted the stolen Power Ring with Anarky attempting to flee via a Boom Tube as he felt that he could accomplish so much with its power and potential. However, Max refused to do so as he felt that Lonnie had not earned the ring and its power could corrupt Anarky. (Anarky v2 #3)

Later on, a Star City center exploded with Anarky being blamed as the terrorist responsible for the incident. Anarky sought out Green Arrow to clear his name, and Arrow saw him as the radical he once was in his youth. They found that brothers Mal and Pete Simons had pulled off a number of robberies by planting bombs, alerting the authorities, and robbing while it was defused. Star City was an accident, but they blamed Anarky to cover their tracks. Pete killed Mal, and Arrow and Anarky captured Pete. Anarky thanked Arrow for listening to him, and helping him clear his name, the only thing that mattered to him. (Green Arrow v3 #51)

Notes

  • Anarky was created by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle where he made his first appearance in Detective Comics v1 #608 (November, 1989).
  • In an interview on Adelaide Comics and Books, Grant had said on the character, "Anarky, not having any super powers, doesn't have what it takes to bring the fans in month after month. He's the sort of character you can get away with using in an annual once a year plus his own miniseries once a year and maybe as a guest star every couple of years, but he's not capable, he's not strong enough to hold his own monthly title. Very few characters are when it comes down to it."
