Android 17 was the brother of Android 18, one of a pair of twins converted into androids by Dr. Gero. Like his sister, 17 became an incredibly powerful fighter, but also became rebellious. 17, along with 18, was placed in stasis by Gero until he was endangered by the pursuing Z Warriors; he freed them, hoping to coerce them into helping him with the threat of putting them back in stasis, but they killed him and set out on their own (with Android 16) to find and battle Goku.

Just prior to arrival at Goku's home, the androids were intercepted by Piccolo, who engaged 17 in one-on-one combat. The two fought a furious battle, only to be interrupted by Cell. Despite Piccolo and 16's attempts to defend him, Android 17 was finally absorbed by the creature, powering his transformation into his second stage.

17 remained within Cell's body for the remainder thereafter, and was presumably destroyed along with the super-warrior when Gohan disintegrated him. He was restored soon after by the Dragon Balls, minus his self-destruct bombs. 17, probably traumatized by his ordeal, retired to become a lumberjack in a remote wilderness.

He was largely inactive after that, save for lending ki energy to the Spirit Bomb Goku intended to use against Majin Buu.

17 later fell under the influence of Artificial 17, an evil duplicate of himself created by Dr. Myuu and Dr. Gero in Hell (HFIL). Under its control, 17 became destructive again, and the two androids opened a portal that released an army of dead villains from Hell (while trapping Goku on the other side). 17 even killed Krillin in an act of spite against his sister. 17 finally ceased to exist when he fused with Artificial 17 to form Super 17. (However, Goku suggested that 17's remaining true self helped hamper Super 17, allowing 18 and Goku to defeat him.)

Alternate Timelines

In Trunks' timeline, 17 (along with 18) was the scourge of the planet (although they were weaker than those in the main timeline.) He was finally destroyed by Trunks after his return from the main timeline's past.
