In reality though, he had faked his own death but had been left paralysed due to nerve damage caused by the poison.

Eventually, Arthur came to the realization on how to get the necessary Catalyst that would provide superhuman powers to the ordinary man. In order to secure it for his plans for the future, Arthur Petrilli used his time travel abilities to go into the past where he ambushed Hiro Nakamura and Claire Bennet. Using his telekinesis, he shoved Claire out of the way and seized Hiro after which he used his ability to steal powers to take both Hiro's time travel abilities and the Catalyst power that he been gifted to him by his dying mother. With the power his, he shoved Hiro of the side of the building with his telekinesis and told Claire to deliver a message to Angela and sent Claire back to the present.

With the power necessary to complete his plans, Arthur returned to the present and to Pinehearst where he went into Dr Surresh's lab. Once there, he used his power to enfuse the energy of the Catalyst with that of the superhuman serum created by Dr Surresh. The solution was then ready to be tested on 15 marine subjects after which it would be ready for mass deployment on the populace.

After using the powers of the Catalyst on the solution created by Dr Surresh, Arthur began to sense the presence of his son Peter nearby. He told his allies that it nothing and went off to confront his son who had a gun pointed towards his head. Arthur did not feel threatened by this and attempted to use his telekinesis to remove the gun only to find his power was not working. It was only then that he realized that the Haitian was present who revealed himself and was blocking Arthur's powers. He attempted to reason with his won by stating that he did what he did for the good of the world which caused Peter to hesitate in shooting him. Eventually, Arthur's actions became more violent as his power was too much for the Haitian to control and he told Peter that he lacked the will to do what needed to be done just as the Haitian's power weakened but by then Peter had fired a bullet right at Arthur's head.

The bullet did not connect as Sylar used his telekinesis to hold the bullet in mid-air near Arthur's head. He asked Arthur if he was his father and Arthur replied that he was, not knowing that Sylar gained the ability to tell truth from lie. Knowing that Arthur was lying, he told Peter that he was not a killer but he was after which Sylar shoved the bullet into Arthur's head thus killing him. With a bullet in his brain preventing any hope of regeneration, Arthur Petrilli had finally succumbed to death and the powers of the Catalyst left his body.
