The Book of the Vishanti is an magical artifact that features in Marvel Comics.

History

The Book of the Vishanti was a mystical tome that had ties with the Vishanti. The mysterious Vishanti had meant in part to be white magic counterweight to the black magic of the Darkhold. (Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme v1 #14)

Long ago, priests of the Babylonian god Marduk called forth the Griffin as a mystical beast to guard the Book of the Vishanti. At some point, the figure that became the Ancient One battled the creature and defeated it thus becoming the possessor of the tome. (Strange Tales v1 #150)

Doctor Strange claimed that he held the only copy of the Book of the Vishanti. (Strange Tales v1 #116)

Shortly after become Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange became burdened by the immense responsibilities of his new role and desired a loved one to aid him. With the Book of the Vishanti, he attempted to recite a passage to restore his deceased brother Victor Strange back to life. Unknown to him, he actually used the Vampiric Verses that brought his deceased brother back in later years as a vampire. (Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme v1 #14)

After becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, Brother Voodoo was given the Book of the Vishanti alongside the Orb of Agamotto and Eye of Agamotto. When Nightmare took over the world, he sought to acquire the book but Daniel Drumm had taken it along with the other Sorcerer Supreme objects to Doctor Doom for safekeeping. It was later given back to Brother Voodoo who used it to find a means of defeating Nightmare and stop his plan to take over Earth. (Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of the Supernatural v1 #5)

Overview

Some of the most powerful and most dangerous magical incantations known to man were present within the book. Every counter-spell known to the mystic arts was inscribed within its time-worn pages. (Strange Tales v1 #116) As such, it was a notable tome for containing all spells for defensive magic. In fact, the book itself was a ultimate tool of defence as any attack spell made against it was reflected back against the user. (Strange Tales v1 #150)

  • Yoovies Spell of Itemized Protection : a spell located on page 497 of the book that could be cast over an object preventing others from being able to wield it. (New Avengers v2 #5)
  • Corelli's Exorcism Reversal Battle Attack : a spell located on page 7 of the book that can be used to free someone possessed by a mystical entity. (New Avengers v2 #5)
  • Colognener's Preparation Spell : situated on page 10 of the book. (New Avengers v2 #5)
  • Colodor's Reversal Spell : situated on page 453 in the book. (New Avengers v2 #6)
  • Gorgerell Transportation Spell : situated on page 567 in the book. (New Avengers v2 #6)
  • Holcate Illusion of the Fears : situated on page 3453 of the book. (New Avengers v2 #10)
  • Teresing Boost Spell of Health : situated on appendix 23 of the book. (New Avengers v2 #10)
  • Teleportation Spell of the Vishanti : situated on page III of the book. (New Avengers v2 #11)
  • Garteek's Halo Spell of the Previous : situated on page 345 of the book that as a halo spell that could illuminate a location. (Avengers v4 #8)
  • Vishanti Spell of Illusion : situated on page 4564 of the book allowing the user to craft an illusion and disguise themselves as another person. (Avengers v4 #12)
  • Vishanti Spell of Mass Illusion : situated on page 5546 allowing the user to craft large scale illusions such as those affecting a city in order to fool an enemy. (New Avengers v2 #20)
  • Death Illusion Spell of the Shadow : situated on page 234 of the book allowing the user to make a person experience an illusion of their own death. (New Avengers v2 #22)
  • Holcate Illusion of the Fears : situated on page 3453 of the book allowing the user to create terrifying illusions to scare a person. (New Avengers v2 #9)
  • Teresing Boost Spell of Health: situated on Appendix 23 of the book that was a healing spell. (New Avengers v2 #10)
  • Vishanti's Light of Illumination : situated on page 3 of the book allowing the caster to produce light from their fingertips. (New Avengers v2 #10)
  • Teleportation Spell of the Vishanti : situated on Page III of the book allowing the user to teleport themselves and others to a different location. (New Avengers v2 #11)
  • Astral Spell of Group Teleportation, Advanced Use of the Nuday : situated on page 7653 of the book allowing the user to teleport themselves and others to a different location. (New Avengers v2 #20)
  • M'Casta Spell of Item Transference : situated on page 3535 of the book that allowed the user to teleport an object to their hands. (New Avengers v2 #13)
  • Vishanti Spell of Offensive Fires of Non : situated on page 234 of the book. (New Avengers v2 #17)
  • Crimson Bands of Cyttorak : spell that summoned the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. (New Avengers v2 #17)
  • Vishanti Spell of Self-Worth and Cleanliness : situated on page 567 of the book. (New Avengers v2 #19)
  • Vampire Verses : a series of passages that could turn the dead into a vampire. (Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme v1 #14)

It was written in the Book that a burning candle may light a skilled sorcerers way into the past. (Strange Tales v1 #150)

Notes

  • The Book of the Vishanti was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko where it made its first appearance in Strange Tales v1 #116 (January, 1964).
  • According to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z v1 #7 (2009), it was said to contain extensive knowledge introduced by several powerful magicians including information collected by Agamotto regarding his discovery and mastery of the "Three Paths to Enlightenment".
