Biography

Encountering Broo in Astonishing X-Men v3 #42.

Broo was a member of the Brood species who was born in the wake of the Annihilation War when the Brood homeworld was gone and their species faced extinction. Broo was born with the unusual trait of possessing emotions such as empathy and compassion that were an anathema to his kind. Typically, those members of the race born with such capacity were killed but the Brood kept him alive but in stasis as they could not afford any of their number to die as the faced death of their species. He was part of the nest that took control of the S.W.O.R.D.’s research satellite known as Pandora’s Box located in Earth’s orbit. The X-Men had arrived where they intended to release him to see if he could be a sign for change among the Brood into becoming a more peaceful race. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #40) Upon release, they were surrounded by infected hosts with Broo along with Kitty Pryde and Lockheed on the run. Broo managed to aid Pryde in distracting the Brood so that she and Lockheed could target the two Queens on the station. One was killed but the other managed to grab onto Broo and severed him from their hive-mind before perishing. This freed the infected X-Men whose Brood larvae were removed whilst they promised that the parasitic aliens were free to return to their home world if they departed peacefully. Before leaving, they stated they wanted nothing to do with Broo as he was seen as an abomination but the X-Men decided to keep him alongside them as he was considered a fellow Mutant for being an outcast from his own race. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #42)

In the aftermath, he was invited to be a student at the newly opened Jean Grey School of Higher Learning. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #1) During this time, he met to Idie who helped stop other students from picking on him and where he first developed a crush on her. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #2) The school later came under attack from the forces of the Hellfire Club where he attempted to help protect his comrades. It was during this time he was introduced to Quentin Quire and Kid Gladiator. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #3)

He later came to be recruited into the Agents of Wakanda that were a support network designed to aid the Avengers when the Black Panther T'Challa became the teams chairman. (Avengers v8 #12)

Overview

Personality and attributes

He was given the name Broo by Idie when they first met and he saved her. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #2) He was also referred to as Broodling, Son of Brood. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #4)

He was noted to wear glasses though he actually did not need them as he only wore them because he thought they made him look less scary to others. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #3)

After encountering Idie, he was smitten by the young Mutant though was not aware of these emotions as the time. He simply noted that gazing at her had a curious effect on his physiology. This even led to him asking her what was the appropriate amount of time before could propose marriage. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #2)

Powers and abilities

As a Brood, he possessed many of the traits of his species. Originally, he was connected to the hive-mind of his race but this was severed from him by a Queen which meant he felt alone as a result without that telepathic voice in his head. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #42)
