Biography

Origin

Becoming a superhero in Ms. Marvel v1 #1.

Carol Danvers

When she was a teenager, she once hiked it to Cape Canaveral in order to watch the Apollo launch with her father being furious with her but Carol felt it was a worthwhile experience as it cultivated a desire to be an astronaut. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164)

Though part of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she was given a cover background of working in the Department of Defense. Around this time, Colonel Fury had her assigned on a stealth mission into Russian airspace to target Soviet ultra-low frequency radio transmitters that were being aimed at America. For the assignment, she met and was joined by test pilot Benjamin Grimm along with Logan. (Before the Fantastic Four: Ben Grimm and Logan v1 #1)

After uncovering the Mutant Agenda, Carol Danvers and Logan discovered the existence of Mutants with groups such as the Hellfire Club. However, she lacked any evidence but believed that they should reveal their findings to people in government with her believing that freshman Senator Kelly would be interested in their findings. (Logan: Shadow Society v1 #1)

She later came to be assigned to Cape Canaveral and became its finest head of security during the time when a damaged Kree Sentry was brought to the missile base for study. General Bridges sought a robotics expert to help in the study of the alien machine with them seeking Dr. Walter Lawson though Carol Danvers opposed the decision as her security division found him to be a reclusive man with little on his background. Despite her objections, Lawson was selected and brought to the base as an expert. (Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #13)

Ms. Marvel

Afterwards, she was taken to the hospital where the doctors noted that it was a miracle that she had survived the radiation exposure. She was later returned to work but her colleagues simply noted her failure in capturing Mar-Vell leading to her security career falling with her eventually resigning from the position at Cape Canaveral. Carol looked to regain her self-confidence in another career with her encountering bouts of depression and sadness in this time. It was six months later when she fell unconscious and manifested her first transformation into her Ms. Marvel form. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) Over the next year, she began to operate as a writer following her leaving the security field where she developed a professional reputation. During this time, she continued to operate as Ms. Marvel with her stopping numerous criminals with people wondering about the identity of this new super-powered woman. She was later hired as an editor at the Daily Bugle with J. Jonah Jameson wanting her to head the new 'Woman' magazine with an expose on the mysterious Ms. Marvel. After accepting the job on her conditions, she came to meet Bugle photographer Peter Parker and his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson with her striking a friendship with the pair. After this time, her seventh sense warned her of the kidnapping of Jameson by the Scorpion with her saving the head of the Daily Bugle. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) She began to experience bouts of unconsciousness during her transformations with her being unaware of her time as Ms. Marvel. This caused her to worry and she sought the aid of her friend Michael Barnett who used hypnosis to uncover the truth with her transforming in front of him. Ms. Marvel responded by following her Seventh Sense leading to a second encounter with the Scorpion where she was ambushed by another assailant named the Destructor who had been dispatched by Advanced Idea Mechanics that sought to study her. She managed to defeat her foe but fell unconscious at the scene as well. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) She regained consciousness but could not stop the Destructor who was rescued by A.I.M. who fled the scene after damaging a building forcing Ms. Marvel to rescue some civilians. In this time, Ms. Marvel began to struggle with her sense of identity as both her Kree form and her human form were unaware of the existence of the other with each experiencing amnesia whenever the other was active. As Ms. Marvel, she responded to a launch into space that was secretly conducted by A.I.M. where she battled the Doomsday Man. (Ms. Marvel v1 #3) She struggled to fight the much stronger Doomsday Man but during this time she came to learn that Ms. Marvel and Carol Danvers were the same entity with two different states of mind. The Kree skills with Carol's knowledge of the Doomsday Man allowed her to outfight her foe but when her back was turned she was shot in the back by the Destructor who was seeking out Kree weaponry in the caverns beneath Cape Canaveral. However, he opened the Kree Power Stone creating a great explosion that buried Ms. Marvel under the rumble where she returned to her Carol Danvers form where she was saved by rescue forces. (Ms. Marvel v1 #4)

Carol then had a crisis as she sought to come to terms with the fact that there were two minds in her body with one being herself and the other being the Kree warrior Ms. Marvel. During this time, she began to receive precognitive visions of an upcoming threat through her Seventh Sense that saw her attempting to stop a truck whilst battling the Vision. The premonition came to pass with Ms. Marvel battling the Vision who mistakenly believed the female hero to had been a supervillain that wanted to steal the Super-Truck he was protecting. Ms. Marvel was able to stop a hidden explosive from spreading the trucks contents which would have killed millions with the two superheroes discovering the driver to had been the inside man and a robot that masqueraded as a human. (Ms. Marvel v1 #5) She next received a premonition of a disaster at a refinery leading to her battling the underground prince Grotesk who had come to steal the Cavourite crystals from a laboratory for himself. (Ms. Marvel v1 #6) Ms. Marvel was rendered unconscious which was when she was captured by A.I.M. under the orders of M.O.D.O.K. who wanted to harness her abilities for his forces and attempted to brainwash her though she managed to escape. (Ms. Marvel v1 #7)

Binary

Danvers genetic nature fascinated the Brood who sought to study her due to her being a unique anomaly with them performing experiments to enhance her evolutionary nature. This caused her body to change into various forms until she was found by Wolverine who freed her and she seemingly returned to normal. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #163)

Warbird

Afterwards, she came to feel her powers behaving differently and decided to see Beast at Avengers Mansion who conducted tests on her. He determined that her powers had definitely decreased and that she was unlikely to become Binary again with this confirming Carols' suspicions as she began to consider a new code-name for her superhero identity. (Avengers v3 #4)

Mighty Avenger

Carol was chosen by Stark to head the new Mighty Avengers superhero team with her accepting though she had reservations on some of her teammates but was overruled by Tony who ultimately controlled the group. (Mighty Avengers v1 #1) Following a DNA bomb attack from A.I.M., Carol became focused on stopping the renegade science based crime organization but she also came to struggle what her purpose was as a hero until she met her publicist. This led to her deciding to going to Director Stark and having him authorising an elite strike force named Operation: Lightning Storm that consisted of selected agents and heroes that would use S.H.I.E.L.D. files to be proactive against threats. (Ms. Marvel v2 #13)

With the defeat of the Skrulls, Norman Osborn was hailed a hero of the world for slaying the alien queen Veranke with S.H.I.E.L.D. being disbanded and a new peacekeeping organization being formed called H.A.M.M.E.R.. Director Osborn was in charge of the organization and he sought to create a new team of superheroes which were the Dark Avengers. Powers and abilities

Manipulating energy in Captain Marvel v8 #1.

This meant that she became somewhat of a genetic anomaly as she was neither Mutant nor baseline Human with her genetic matrix being unique. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #163) Following that contact, she gained the powers of the Kree warrior race with these included super-strength, flight and a strange seventh sense. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) Originally, her costume automatically created an energy field that protected her from the cold vacuum of space and radiation whilst providing a breathable atmosphere for her as well. (Ms. Marvel v1 #3) Initially, her ability to fly was derived from the advanced webbing of her costume but a second blast of radiation from the Psyche-Magnitron transferred the power to Carol Danvers allowing her to naturally fly on her own power. (Ms. Marvel v1 #7) When she became Captain Marvel, she demonstrated some ability to survive in the vacuum of space but required an air supply in order to continue to function. (Captain Marvel v7 #1)

For a time, she possessed a Seventh Sense that vaguely alerted her of danger and allowed her to respond to it. It also warned her of threats at a great distance where she could help others that were under attack. This power allowed her to track her targets if she concentrated on using it. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) As such, the Seventh Sense allowed her to anticipate an opponent's attack before it occurred. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) This power became a form of precognition as she could witness dangerous events occurred in the upcoming future. This was described as a psychic power whereby she only could sense danger but not determine the true nature of the threat. (Ms. Marvel v1 #5)

She was shown to be capable of absorbing the energy of a thermonuclear warhead that detonated in front of her. (Mighty Avengers v1 #6)

The evolutionary modifications of the Brood activated latent abilities within herself leading to her transformation into Binary. This allowed her to tap into a white whole with her energy source being the primal fabric of the universe itself. In this form, she was said to hold the functional equivalent power of a star. This allowed her to generate light, heat, radiation from across the spectrum, and gravity with her perception of reality being much greater. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164)

Her costume had a retractable faceplate that activated and covered her eyes when needed. The sash she wore around her waist was made of a Stark designed fabric and impermeable allowing her to use it in battle as a means of suffocating enemies till they passed out and harmless. (Captain Marvel v7 #1) Her original costume was said to contain a sophisticated electronic webbing that apparently enhanced her natural ability to sail the planet's electromagnetic field thus allowing her to fly in a way unknown to Earth understanding by a means of science that was light years ahead of mankind. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2)

At one point, she came to operate from the crown of the Statue of Liberty that included living quarters for her. (Captain Marvel v8 #1) For a time, she came to operate from Minicarrier 13 that was a small helicarrier and served as the headquarters for her Operation: Lightning Storm. (Ms. Marvel v2 #13)

The fear of this prejudice led to her becoming a spy for Magneto who granted her the honorary status of being a Mutant hero after the war ended and he came to rule the world.
