Carol Danvers in Mighty Captain Marvel v1 #1.

Carol Danvers is a female comic superhero that features in Marvel Comics.

Becoming a superhero in Ms. Marvel v1 #1.

Carol Danvers

When she was a teenager, she once hiked it to Cape Canaveral in order to watch the Apollo launch with her father being furious with her but Carol felt it was a worthwhile experience as it cultivated a desire to be an astronaut. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164)

Whilst at NASA, Carol served as an instructor to Salia Petrie in the space flight program with the two becoming close friends. (Ms. Marvel v1 #11)

Though part of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she was given a cover background of working in the Department of Defense. Around this time, Colonel Fury had her assigned on a stealth mission into Russian airspace to target Soviet ultra-low frequency radio transmitters that were being aimed at America. For the assignment, she met and was joined by test pilot Benjamin Grimm along with Logan. (Before the Fantastic Four: Ben Grimm and Logan v1 #1) During their covert mission, their plane was attacked and they were forced to make a crash landing in Russian territory with Carol activating the self-destruct on their craft to prevent its capture. Logan and Ben were tasked with keeping the enemy busy so she could destroy the planes black box recorders in the woods leading to their capture. Whilst in the woods, Danvers was attacked by hungry wolves that she managed to fight off but she was denied a means of destroying the recorders. Thus, she decided to keep them and return back to U.S. territory where she hijacked a Russian plane and during the flight found the captive Logan as well as Ben who managed to grab on her craft as they attempted their escape. (Before the Fantastic Four: Ben Grimm and Logan v1 #2)

As a government agent, she was once sent on a joint mission to Canada to help arrest an arms dealer who was selling guns through illegal supply routes to anyone. After uncovering the Mutant Agenda, Carol Danvers and Logan discovered the existence of Mutants with groups such as the Hellfire Club. However, she lacked any evidence but believed that they should reveal their findings to people in government with her believing that freshman Senator Kelly would be interested in their findings. (Logan: Shadow Society v1 #1)

She later came to be assigned to Cape Canaveral and became its finest head of security during the time when a damaged Kree Sentry was brought to the missile base for study. General Bridges sought a robotics expert to help in the study of the alien machine with them seeking Dr. Walter Lawson though Carol Danvers opposed the decision as her security division found him to be a reclusive man with little on his background. Despite her objections, Lawson was selected and brought to the base as an expert. (Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #13) The base came under attack when the Sentry reactivated and attacked anyone that impeded it leading to the arrival of a masked being named Mar-Vell who was a man of the Kree. The two battled where the hero came to protect Carol from harm with the Sentry imploding following the instigation of a magnetic fusion process. Danvers was rendered unconscious where Captain Marvel took her back to the base where she recovered and felt that she would meet the mysterious stranger again. (Captain Marvel v1 #1)

Ms. Marvel

Afterwards, she was taken to the hospital where the doctors noted that it was a miracle that she had survived the radiation exposure. She was later returned to work but her colleagues simply noted her failure in capturing Mar-Vell leading to her security career falling with her eventually resigning from the position at Cape Canaveral. Carol looked to regain her self-confidence in another career with her encountering bouts of depression and sadness in this time. It was six months later when she fell unconscious and manifested her first transformation into her Ms. Marvel form. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) Over the next year, she began to operate as a writer following her leaving the security field where she developed a professional reputation. During this time, she continued to operate as Ms. Marvel with her stopping numerous criminals with people wondering about the identity of this new super-powered woman. She was later hired as an editor at the Daily Bugle with J. Jonah Jameson wanting her to head the new 'Woman' magazine with an expose on the mysterious Ms. Marvel. After accepting the job on her conditions, she came to meet Bugle photographer Peter Parker and his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson with her striking a friendship with the pair. After this time, her seventh sense warned her of the kidnapping of Jameson by the Scorpion with her saving the head of the Daily Bugle. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) She began to experience bouts of unconsciousness during her transformations with her being unaware of her time as Ms. Marvel. This caused her to worry and she sought the aid of her friend Michael Barnett who used hypnosis to uncover the truth with her transforming in front of him. Ms. Marvel responded by following her Seventh Sense leading to a second encounter with the Scorpion where she was ambushed by another assailant named the Destructor who had been dispatched by Advanced Idea Mechanics that sought to study her. She managed to defeat her foe but fell unconscious at the scene as well. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) She regained consciousness but could not stop the Destructor who was rescued by A.I.M. who fled the scene after damaging a building forcing Ms. Marvel to rescue some civilians. In this time, Ms. Marvel began to struggle with her sense of identity as both her Kree form and her human form were unaware of the existence of the other with each experiencing amnesia whenever the other was active. As Ms. Marvel, she responded to a launch into space that was secretly conducted by A.I.M. where she battled the Doomsday Man. (Ms. Marvel v1 #3) She struggled to fight the much stronger Doomsday Man but during this time she came to learn that Ms. Marvel and Carol Danvers were the same entity with two different states of mind. The Kree skills with Carol's knowledge of the Doomsday Man allowed her to outfight her foe but when her back was turned she was shot in the back by the Destructor who was seeking out Kree weaponry in the caverns beneath Cape Canaveral. However, he opened the Kree Power Stone creating a great explosion that buried Ms. Marvel under the rumble where she returned to her Carol Danvers form where she was saved by rescue forces. (Ms. Marvel v1 #4)

Carol then had a crisis as she sought to come to terms with the fact that there were two minds in her body with one being herself and the other being the Kree warrior Ms. Marvel. During this time, she began to receive precognitive visions of an upcoming threat through her Seventh Sense that saw her attempting to stop a truck whilst battling the Vision. The premonition came to pass with Ms. Marvel battling the Vision who mistakenly believed the female hero to had been a supervillain that wanted to steal the Super-Truck he was protecting. Ms. Marvel was able to stop a hidden explosive from spreading the trucks contents which would have killed millions with the two superheroes discovering the driver to had been the inside man and a robot that masqueraded as a human. (Ms. Marvel v1 #5) She next received a premonition of a disaster at a refinery leading to her battling the underground prince Grotesk who had come to steal the Cavourite crystals from a laboratory for himself. (Ms. Marvel v1 #6) Ms. Marvel was rendered unconscious which was when she was captured by A.I.M. under the orders of M.O.D.O.K. who wanted to harness her abilities for his forces and attempted to brainwash her though she managed to escape. (Ms. Marvel v1 #7) Carol then called in S.H.I.E.L.D. to investigate the department store that A.I.M. was using as a front and called upon an old favour but the team that arrived found no trace of the criminal organization leading to them departing. Danvers attempted to return to her civilian life by hiring famous retired photojournalist Tracy Burke as associate editor of the magazine. She then received a premonition via her Seventh Sense which was interrupted by a thug who attacked her whereupon her Ms. Marvel Kree personality took over which brutally beat the criminal leaving him unconscious at a bar. Afterwards, Carol decided to go on a date to the beach with Michael Barnett only to learn that Ms. Marvel had subconsciously drawn her to the site of her vision. She later transformed and encountered Grotesk once more who had broken into the site to use an experimental military laser on the Cavorite crystal to create a warp energy implosion to destroy the Earth as part of his efforts to avenge his race though he was ultimately defeated with him vanishing in an explosion. (Ms. Marvel v1 #8) As Ms. Marvel, she was next flying in the sky when she was ambushed by the alien warrior Deathbird who was working on behalf of M.O.D.O.K. where she barely managed to survive. Upon returning to her apartment, she found it had been destroyed in a fire with most of Carol's belongings destroyed with this secretly being done by A.I.M. who wanted to remove any evidence of their presence at Alden Department Store. Whilst running the Woman Magazine, she decided to investigate the store only to be ambushed by M.O.D.O.K. and A.I.M. forces when they detected an unauthorised entry into a hidden part of the store. (Ms. Marvel v1 #9) She then stumbled on a civil war between two A.I.M. factions where in the chaos she fought Deathbird once more only for the villain to escape as M.O.D.O.K. claimed his rivals rocket launch site so that they could commandeer an experiment in interstellar flight using Cavourite crystals that was being conducted by the government. M.O.D.O.K. intended to use this as a means of controlling the world with Ms. Marvel intervening where she defeated Deathbird though the villains leader of A.I.M. managed to escape. (Ms. Marvel v1 #10)

She continued to operate as a hero whilst having the two sides of her mind work with one another. She came to receive a premonition that showed her friend Salia Petrie dying in a space launch incident where she attempted to stop it as Ms. Marvel leading to a confrontation with Hecate. (Ms. Marvel v1 #11)

When the Scarlet Witch took a leave of absence, Ms. Marvel agreed to serve as her temporary replacement on the Avengers. Henry Peter Gyrich attempted to take her fingerprints stating that security arrangements to join the team were strict with the female superhero refusing as she did not want her secret identity exposed. Tony Stark offered a compromise by suggesting a retinal scan allowing for Ms. Marvel's true identity to remain hidden whilst containing a record to prevent an imposter from disguising themselves as her. (Avenger v1 #183)

She alongside Iron Man went to the home of her friend Michael Barnett who had been murdered with the two heroes attempting to find the culprit. A machine was used to replicate the circumstances of his death where it was shown that a metamorph that had taken Carol's form was responsible for beating Barnett to death before leaving with a file on Danvers. This led to Ms. Marvel vowing revenge and refused Iron Man's aid as she said that this was a private affair. Carol then attended Michael Barnett's funeral she began to receive premonitions of the future that showed her death. This led to her deciding to investigate the trail of weapons concerning the mysterious shapeshifter where as Ms. Marvel she stumbled upon the Hellfire Club and only barely managed to escape them. Afterwards, she trailed one of their operatives who was secretly selling arms to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Mystique. As Carol, she decided to go undercover by attracting the attention of the arms dealer Peter Coelho who had a weakness for beautiful women. The next day at their destination, she decided to meet with Peter only to be ambushed by two Mutant Brotherhood operatives that tried to kill her with Ms. Marvel managing to defeat them. She later discovered that Coelho had been murdered leaving the trail cold which was when she encountered another Brotherhood member named Rogue. Ms. Marvel put up a fight against the Mutant where Rogue attempted to siphon the superhero's power but her physical contact was too long causing her to absorb both Carol's minds and powers thus leaving her in a confused state whilst Danvers herself was rendered amnesiac as well as powerless. (Marvel Super-Heroes v2 #11)

Danvers genetic nature fascinated the Brood who sought to study her due to her being a unique anomaly with them performing experiments to enhance her evolutionary nature. This caused her body to change into various forms until she was found by Wolverine who freed her and she seemingly returned to normal. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #163)

Afterwards, she came to feel her powers behaving differently and decided to see Beast at Avengers Mansion who conducted tests on her. He determined that her powers had definitely decreased and that she was unlikely to become Binary again with this confirming Carols' suspicions as she began to consider a new code-name for her superhero identity. (Avengers v3 #4)

Mighty Avenger

Carol was chosen by Stark to head the new Mighty Avengers superhero team with her accepting though she had reservations on some of her teammates but was overruled by Tony who ultimately controlled the group. (Mighty Avengers v1 #1) Following a DNA bomb attack from A.I.M., Carol became focused on stopping the renegade science based crime organization but she also came to struggle what her purpose was as a hero until she met her publicist. This led to her deciding to going to Director Stark and having him authorising an elite strike force named Operation: Lightning Storm that consisted of selected agents and heroes that would use S.H.I.E.L.D. files to be proactive against threats. (Ms. Marvel v2 #13)

With the defeat of the Skrulls, Norman Osborn was hailed a hero of the world for slaying the alien queen Veranke with S.H.I.E.L.D. being disbanded and a new peacekeeping organization being formed called H.A.M.M.E.R.. Director Osborn was in charge of the organization and he sought to create a new team of superheroes which were the Dark Avengers. Ms. Marvel was tasked with leading the team but she refused as she did not wish to work with Osborn due to his supervillain history leading to her resigning. Unknown to her, Carol's position on the team was then replaced with Moonstone who was given a version of the Ms. Marvel costume. (Dark Avengers v1 #1) When Danielle Cage was recovered from the Skrulls, Ms. Marvel assisted the heroes in taking Jessica Jones and the baby to safety way from Norman Osborn. (New Avengers v1 #49) She rendezvoused with the other fugitive superheroes at Captain America's secret base where they witnessed the public announcement of Osborn's team of Avengers where they managed to determine that it consisted largely of supervillains. It was decided by the team to ambush the Dark Avengers by luring them into a trap at an abandoned Hellfire Club base where Carol had intended to use a Starktech power inhibitor to temporarily stop Osborn's team. However, Norman had anticipated this ambush and instead leaked information to the Hood whose gang of supervillains attacked where they swarmed the heroes. Ms. Marvel then asked Spider-Woman to use her venom blast on her so that she could redirect it against the horde of supervillains thus stunning them all and allowing the superheroes to quickly escape. (New Avengers v1 #50) Barton later decided that their Avengers team needed leadership with Carol declining the role though she agreed to have Clint be their leader with him making her his second-in-command. (New Avengers v1 #51) They then encountered a wounded Doctor Strange who escaped a demonically possessed Hood who was looking to claim the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Strange had decided to seek a successor to his former role and intended to pass the Eye of Agamotto to them with the New Avengers deciding to assist him as it meant dealing with the Hood. (New Avengers v1 #52) They later arrived in New Orleans where their Quinjet was shot down by Madame Masque whilst the Hood made his move to try and claim the Eye. (New Avengers v1 #53)

Captain Marvel

Captain America later attempted to convince her to claim the mantle of Captain Marvel with Carol initially being reluctant before accepting it. (Captain Marvel v7 #1)

Carol was later appointed the head of the first line of planetary defence that became Alpha Flight. (Captain Marvel v9 #1) Afterwards, she sought to create a related proactive strike force with a team that sought out potential threats and resolve them before they became a danger to Earth. This team were to apply non-violent solutions whenever possible with this being a proposal that Captain Marvel brought to several superheroes. These included Black Panther, Blue Marvel, Spectrum and Ms. America who came to form the Ultimates. (Ultimates v2 #8)

She managed to arrive on Spartax where she saved Star-Lord from his father J'son who ruled the Spartoi empire. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #16)

Her home came under attack from a Kree Kleaner that was targeting her mother who was revealed to actually be a Kree warrior in disguise. It was then that Carol learnt her true origin as her mother had been sent as an infiltrator to Earth but fell in love with her father. Carol was thus naturally part-Kree and had inherited great powers from her mother. (Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #4)

During the battle with She-Hulk, she managed to defeat her foe and took both Jen along with T'Challa into the pocket dimension inside Singularity. Carol then confronted Captain America who decided to trust her in doing the right thing and allowed himself to be captured. Captain Marvel then took the cloned copies of her friends to Vox on the Gray Area of the Moon where the villain rendered Carol unconscious. He then revealed his true goal of using the super-powered Avengers to help him spawn a master race of Kree to rule the cosmos. (Captain Marvel v10 #15)

Personality and attributes

U.S. Airforce officer in Avengers v8 #4.
The legacy of Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel v7 #6.

Her full name was Carol Susan Jane Danvers. (Iron Man v3 #7) Unknown to her initially, her actual name given to her by her mother was Car-Ell that meant Champion on Hala. (Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #4) For a time, she took on the superhero name of Warbird which stemmed from her liking planes and fighter jets from childhood. (Iron Man v3 #7)

From her youth, she was known to loved planes and made countless models of them including warbird fighter jets. (Iron Man v3 #7) She had always wanted to be an astronaut as she desired to explore space, discover new worlds and civilizations. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164)

For most of her adult life, she believed that she had walked hand-in-hand with the Reaper as she had killed and nearly been killed on many different occasions. She came to believe that she had left that life behind after she had left NASA and the Air Force. (Marvel Super-Heroes v2 #11)

For a time, she began to suffer from a case of amnesia when she transformed into her Ms. Marvel form. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) Her other personality was that of a Kree who believed she was raised on Kree-Lar and trained to be brutal in dispatching enemies. (Ms. Marvel v1 #8) The two personas came to somewhat coexist with one another but there were periods where they struggled for dominance of the body. The Kree portion was able to force a transformation into Ms. Marvel though this was a psychic wrench that their collective mind suffered from whenever this happened between the two minds. (Ms. Marvel v1 #10) The Kree part of him had no compunction against killing or hurting her enemies but was held back by the Carol Danvers side. (Ms. Marvel v1 #11)

Unknown to her, her mother was actually a highly skilled Kree warrior whose real name was 'Mari-Ell and had been sent to infiltrate Earth long ago but fell in love with widower Joseph Danvers. She ultimately abandoned her mission and chosen to live as a human where she became a mother to his two children with her later giving birth to her daughter. (Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #4)

She had considered her Avenger colleagues had betrayed her during the events regarding Marcus. (Marvel Super-Heroes v2 #11)

Carol was noted for liking and being attracted to Spider-Man. (Siege: Spider-Man v1 #1) She later came to be romantically involved with James Rhodes. (Captain Marvel v8 #1)

Powers and abilities

Manipulating energy in Captain Marvel v8 #1.

Unknown to anyone, her powers were actually a natural part of her genetic make-up as she was part-Kree from her mothers side. (Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #4)

This meant that she became somewhat of a genetic anomaly as she was neither Mutant nor baseline Human with her genetic matrix being unique. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #163) Following that contact, she gained the powers of the Kree warrior race with these included super-strength, flight and a strange seventh sense. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) Originally, her costume automatically created an energy field that protected her from the cold vacuum of space and radiation whilst providing a breathable atmosphere for her as well. (Ms. Marvel v1 #3) Her body was able to absorb heat as energy that could surge into her body's system and help jumpstart her heart. (Captain Marvel v7 #10) Initially, her ability to fly was derived from the advanced webbing of her costume but a second blast of radiation from the Psyche-Magnitron transferred the power to Carol Danvers allowing her to naturally fly on her own power. (Ms. Marvel v1 #7) When she became Captain Marvel, she demonstrated some ability to survive in the vacuum of space but required an air supply in order to continue to function. (Captain Marvel v7 #1)

For a time, she possessed a Seventh Sense that vaguely alerted her of danger and allowed her to respond to it. It also warned her of threats at a great distance where she could help others that were under attack. This power allowed her to track her targets if she concentrated on using it. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) As such, the Seventh Sense allowed her to anticipate an opponent's attack before it occurred. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) This power became a form of precognition as she could witness dangerous events occurred in the upcoming future. This was described as a psychic power whereby she only could sense danger but not determine the true nature of the threat. (Ms. Marvel v1 #5) It was said that her powers were the same as Mar-Vell in that she was able to sense changes to the fabric of the universe itself allowing her to feel danger from cosmic forces. (Ultimates 2 v2 #1)

She was shown to be capable of absorbing the energy of a thermonuclear warhead that detonated in front of her. (Mighty Avengers v1 #6) In one case, she was able to absorb Spider-Woman's venom blast and redirect it to strike specific enemies whilst leaving her comrades unharmed. (New Avengers v1 #50) Carol was able to also absorb the electrical energy in the brain of a person though this typically killed all but the most powerful of opponents. (Captain Marvel v10 #15)

The evolutionary modifications of the Brood activated latent abilities within herself leading to her transformation into Binary. This allowed her to tap into a white whole with her energy source being the primal fabric of the universe itself. In this form, she was said to hold the functional equivalent power of a star. This allowed her to generate light, heat, radiation from across the spectrum, and gravity with her perception of reality being much greater. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164) Despite seemingly losing them, she still retained the power to connect to local white holes allowing its flat energies to bolster her own with nominal risks to the universe. However, such connections had the real risk of potentially extinguishing life in newly-formed universes across the white hole. (Secret Avengers v1 #28)

Her costume had a retractable faceplate that activated and covered her eyes when needed. The sash she wore around her waist was made of a Stark designed fabric and impermeable allowing her to use it in battle as a means of suffocating enemies till they passed out and harmless. (Captain Marvel v7 #1) Her original costume was said to contain a sophisticated electronic webbing that apparently enhanced her natural ability to sail the planet's electromagnetic field thus allowing her to fly in a way unknown to Earth understanding by a means of science that was light years ahead of mankind. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2)

At one point, she came to operate from the crown of the Statue of Liberty that included living quarters for her. (Captain Marvel v8 #1) For a time, she came to operate from Minicarrier 13 that was a small helicarrier and served as the headquarters for her Operation: Lightning Storm. (Ms. Marvel v2 #13)

  • Carol Danvers was created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan where she made her first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #13 (March, 1968).
  • She debuted as Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel v1 #1 (January, 1977) then as Binary Uncanny X-Men v1 #164 (December 1982) and as Captain Marvel in Avenging Spider-Man v1 #9 (September, 2012).
  • The Life of Captain Marvel v2 (2018) provided a retcon to her origins with it stating that she was naturally part-Kree and was not given her powers from the Psyche-Magnitron.
  • Writer Gerry Conway commented on the characters debut as Ms. Marvel, "Carol Danvers had never really had much play in the original [Captain Marvel] series,” Conway said, “but I felt that she had potential because, unlike some of the female characters that we had in other series, she wasn’t somebody’s girlfriend; she wasn’t somebody’s daughter. She was a security officer on the base, and as such had her own distinct role to play. She seemed like a natural to be given powers and upgraded to her own solo title. There were definite attempts to create this kind of feminist role model,” Conway said. “And very specifically on the first or second page of the book, I had a small girl character react to Ms. Marvel’s arrival, going ‘Wow. She’s really cool. I wanna be like her when I grow up,’ which was intended to say, ‘Hey, we’re trying to reach a female audience, and we’re looking for girls to be as inspired by comics as boys." He also noted that in an attempt to tie into modern feminism that he worked closely with his wife at the time Carla Conway on the concept where it was decided to name the character Ms. Marvel rather than Miss with this being a direct tribute to to modern feminism was a given to Conway and Marvel, considering the intended audience, and the writer worked closely with his wife at the time, Carla Conway, on the concept. Naming the character Ms. Marvel, rather than Miss, was a direct tribute to Gloria Steinem and Ms.
  • In an interview with writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, she stated that, “Carol falls down all the time but she always gets back up — we say that about Captain America as well, but Captain America gets back up because it’s the right thing to do. Carol gets back up because ‘Fuck you.’”
  • When she became Captain Marvel, artist Jamie McKelvie re-designed the characters costume. DeConnick noted that, “It looks like she’s in a superhero branch of the military, the dress uniform for the superhero branches of the military. It’s kind of dignified but also utilitarian.”

Alternate Versions

  • In The Age of the Sentry v1 #2 (2008), an alternate version of Carol Danvers was shown to exist on the world designated as Earth-1611. This version was shown as being in the military but was secretly a super-powered being who called herself the Sentress and worked alongside the Sentry in that universe.
  • In Civil War: House of M v1 #5 (2009), an alternate version of Carol Danvers was shown to inhabit the House of M in the world designated as Earth-58163. She was shown as a high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent for years who gained her powers but hid them from the world. During the Mutant-Human War, she fought alongside her fellow agents but did not reveal her powers as she feared the reaction of other humans. The fear of this prejudice led to her becoming a spy for Magneto who granted her the honorary status of being a Mutant hero after the war ended and he came to rule the world. This led to him naming her Captain Marvel who became a champion to both Mutants and Humans in the world where she became very popular despite lacking the X-Gene.
