Biography

Origin

Becoming a superhero in Ms. Marvel v1 #1.

Carol Susan Jane Danvers

When she was a teenager, she once hiked it to Cape Canaveral in order to watch the Apollo launch with her father being furious with her but Carol felt it was a worthwhile experience as it cultivated a desire to be an astronaut. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164)

Carol ultimately wanted to continue her education and go to college with her working part-time for two years in order to pay for tuition. Despite that, she was still short on money and as a last resort she asked her father for a loan. He refused as he said that he lacked the money and only had enough to send one of his children to college with him deciding it would be Carol's brother Steve Danvers. This was a source of many arguments between Carol and her father with the latter wanting his daughter to marry a man to become a housewife. In anger, she left the house and went to Boston where she hated her father over his views. Whilst walking, she saw a sign looking for recruits into the U.S. Air Force with Carol deciding that was going to be her future career. After graduating the first in her class, she spent the Summer working as a salesgirl at Filene's Basement and on her 18th birthday she enlisted in the military without informing her parents. After basic training, she came to be assigned to strategic operations were she was partnered with Colonel Michael Rossi who was her first teacher. (Ms. Marvel v1 #19)

In the following years, she rose to the top of her Air Force class, adopting the call sign Cheeseburger, after throwing up her lunch in a gravitational test. Located in the Karshi-Kanabad Air Base in Uzbekistan, Major Danvers was the best pilot of her unit. She was tasked of inaugurating an experimental jet built by Tony Stark, secretly the super hero known as Iron Man. The recon flight was a disaster when she was captured by a terrorist leader named Ghazi Rashid, who tortured her for several days in Afghanistan about the Project: Ascension. Even with a broken leg and serious injuries due to the crash, she managed to escape, execute Rashid and discover he had been in contact with a C.I.A. agent codenamed Vitamin. (Ms. Marvel v2 #32) The injured Danvers made it to a safe house in Mazar-e-Sharif, where she debriefed Colonel Michael Rossi. Not trusting C.I.A., she chose not to share the intel she had collected. Her alleged amnesia costed her position, and she was no longer cleared for flying. Danvers was trusted by Rossi to be recruited into Air Force Special Operations instead. (Ms. Marvel v2 #33) Rossi assisted Danvers in her recovery, becoming a mentor figure she nicknamed "Ace." They had their first mission together as field operatives in Berlin. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #182)

Whilst at NASA, Carol served as an instructor to Salia Petrie in the space flight program with the two becoming close friends. (Ms. Marvel v1 #11)

Working with secret intelligence, Danvers falsely claimed to respond to different agencies when on duty, including C.I.A.. Partnered with Nick Fury, she met the amnesiac mutant named Logan in Washington D.C., when dealing with the combined attacks of Hydra and Sabretooth. (Wolverine v2 #-1)

Though part of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she was given a cover background of working in the Department of Defense. Around this time, Colonel Fury had her assigned on a stealth mission into Russian airspace to target Soviet ultra-low frequency radio transmitters that were being aimed at America. For the assignment, she met and was joined by test pilot Benjamin Grimm along with Logan. (Before the Fantastic Four: Ben Grimm and Logan v1 #1) During their covert mission, their plane was attacked and they were forced to make a crash landing in Russian territory with Carol activating the self-destruct on their craft to prevent its capture. Logan and Ben were tasked with keeping the enemy busy so she could destroy the planes black box recorders in the woods leading to their capture. Whilst in the woods, Danvers was attacked by hungry wolves that she managed to fight off but she was denied a means of destroying the recorders. Thus, she decided to keep them and return back to U.S. territory where she hijacked a Russian plane and during the flight found the captive Logan as well as Ben who managed to grab on her craft as they attempted their escape. (Before the Fantastic Four: Ben Grimm and Logan v1 #2)

As a government agent, she was once sent on a joint mission to Canada to help arrest an arms dealer who was selling guns through illegal supply routes to anyone. After uncovering the Mutant Agenda, Carol Danvers and Logan discovered the existence of Mutants with groups such as the Hellfire Club. However, she lacked any evidence but believed that they should reveal their findings to people in government with her believing that freshman Senator Kelly would be interested in their findings. (Logan: Shadow Society v1 #1)

She later came to be assigned to Cape Canaveral and became its finest head of security during the time when a damaged Kree Sentry was brought to the missile base for study. General Bridges sought a robotics expert to help in the study of the alien machine with them seeking Dr. Walter Lawson though Carol Danvers opposed the decision as her security division found him to be a reclusive man with little on his background. Despite her objections, Lawson was selected and brought to the base as an expert. (Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #13) The base came under attack when the Sentry reactivated and attacked anyone that impeded it leading to the arrival of a masked being named Mar-Vell who was a man of the Kree. The two battled where the hero came to protect Carol from harm with the Sentry imploding following the instigation of a magnetic fusion process. Danvers was rendered unconscious where Captain Marvel took her back to the base where she recovered and felt that she would meet the mysterious stranger again. (Captain Marvel v1 #1)

Ms. Marvel

Afterwards, she was taken to the hospital where the doctors noted that it was a miracle that she had survived the radiation exposure. She was later returned to work but her colleagues simply noted her failure in capturing Mar-Vell leading to her security career falling with her eventually resigning from the position at Cape Canaveral. Carol looked to regain her self-confidence in another career with her encountering bouts of depression and sadness in this time. It was six months later when she fell unconscious and manifested her first transformation into her Ms. Marvel form. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) Over the next year, she began to operate as a writer following her leaving the security field where she developed a professional reputation. During this time, she continued to operate as Ms. Marvel with her stopping numerous criminals with people wondering about the identity of this new super-powered woman. She was later hired as an editor at the Daily Bugle with J. Jonah Jameson wanting her to head the new 'Woman' magazine with an expose on the mysterious Ms. Marvel. After accepting the job on her conditions, she came to meet Bugle photographer Peter Parker and his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson with her striking a friendship with the pair. After this time, her seventh sense warned her of the kidnapping of Jameson by the Scorpion with her saving the head of the Daily Bugle. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) She began to experience bouts of unconsciousness during her transformations with her being unaware of her time as Ms. Marvel. This caused her to worry and she sought the aid of her friend Michael Barnett who used hypnosis to uncover the truth with her transforming in front of him. Ms. Marvel responded by following her Seventh Sense leading to a second encounter with the Scorpion where she was ambushed by another assailant named the Destructor who had been dispatched by Advanced Idea Mechanics that sought to study her. She managed to defeat her foe but fell unconscious at the scene as well. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) She regained consciousness but could not stop the Destructor who was rescued by A.I.M. who fled the scene after damaging a building forcing Ms. Marvel to rescue some civilians. In this time, Ms. Marvel began to struggle with her sense of identity as both her Kree form and her human form were unaware of the existence of the other with each experiencing amnesia whenever the other was active. As Ms. Marvel, she responded to a launch into space that was secretly conducted by A.I.M. where she battled the Doomsday Man. (Ms. Marvel v1 #3) She struggled to fight the much stronger Doomsday Man but during this time she came to learn that Ms. Marvel and Carol Danvers were the same entity with two different states of mind. The Kree skills with Carol's knowledge of the Doomsday Man allowed her to outfight her foe but when her back was turned she was shot in the back by the Destructor who was seeking out Kree weaponry in the caverns beneath Cape Canaveral. However, he opened the Kree Power Stone creating a great explosion that buried Ms. Marvel under the rumble where she returned to her Carol Danvers form where she was saved by rescue forces. (Ms. Marvel v1 #4)

Carol then had a crisis as she sought to come to terms with the fact that there were two minds in her body with one being herself and the other being the Kree warrior Ms. Marvel. During this time, she began to receive precognitive visions of an upcoming threat through her Seventh Sense that saw her attempting to stop a truck whilst battling the Vision. The premonition came to pass with Ms. Marvel battling the Vision who mistakenly believed the female hero to had been a supervillain that wanted to steal the Super-Truck he was protecting. Ms. Marvel was able to stop a hidden explosive from spreading the trucks contents which would have killed millions with the two superheroes discovering the driver to had been the inside man and a robot that masqueraded as a human. (Ms. Marvel v1 #5) She next received a premonition of a disaster at a refinery leading to her battling the underground prince Grotesk who had come to steal the Cavourite crystals from a laboratory for himself. (Ms. Marvel v1 #6) Ms. Marvel was rendered unconscious which was when she was captured by A.I.M. under the orders of M.O.D.O.K. who wanted to harness her abilities for his forces and attempted to brainwash her though she managed to escape. (Ms. Marvel v1 #7) Carol then called in S.H.I.E.L.D. to investigate the department store that A.I.M. was using as a front and called upon an old favour but the team that arrived found no trace of the criminal organization leading to them departing. Danvers attempted to return to her civilian life by hiring famous retired photojournalist Tracy Burke as associate editor of the magazine. She then received a premonition via her Seventh Sense which was interrupted by a thug who attacked her whereupon her Ms. Marvel Kree personality took over which brutally beat the criminal leaving him unconscious at a bar. Afterwards, Carol decided to go on a date to the beach with Michael Barnett only to learn that Ms. Marvel had subconsciously drawn her to the site of her vision. She later transformed and encountered Grotesk once more who had broken into the site to use an experimental military laser on the Cavorite crystal to create a warp energy implosion to destroy the Earth as part of his efforts to avenge his race though he was ultimately defeated with him vanishing in an explosion. (Ms. Marvel v1 #8) As Ms. Marvel, she was next flying in the sky when she was ambushed by the alien warrior Deathbird who was working on behalf of M.O.D.O.K. where she barely managed to survive. Upon returning to her apartment, she found it had been destroyed in a fire with most of Carol's belongings destroyed with this secretly being done by A.I.M. who wanted to remove any evidence of their presence at Alden Department Store. Whilst running the Woman Magazine, she decided to investigate the store only to be ambushed by M.O.D.O.K. and A.I.M. forces when they detected an unauthorised entry into a hidden part of the store. (Ms. Marvel v1 #9) She then stumbled on a civil war between two A.I.M. factions where in the chaos she fought Deathbird once more only for the villain to escape as M.O.D.O.K. claimed his rivals rocket launch site so that they could commandeer an experiment in interstellar flight using Cavourite crystals that was being conducted by the government. M.O.D.O.K. intended to use this as a means of controlling the world with Ms. Marvel intervening where she defeated Deathbird though the villains leader of A.I.M. managed to escape. (Ms. Marvel v1 #10)

She continued to operate as a hero whilst having the two sides of her mind work with one another. During a visit at Cape Canaveral to cover Salia Petrie's first space flight, Danvers foresaw her friend's demise in an explosion caused by the Cavorite crystal aboard her shuttle. This saw Carol attempting to stop it as Ms. Marvel but that persona took over to answer to a different crisis concerning the Elementals and Hecate's search for the Ruby Scarab. (Ms. Marvel v1 #11) Danvers tried to regain control of her body, but Ms. Marvel resisted by having determined that the threat of the Elementals was more pressing than Petrie's safety. When Ms. Marvel managed to get hold of the artifact, she turned back into Carol Danvers, who lashed out for having turned her back on her friend. (Ms. Marvel v1 #12) Hecate made Carol Danvers realize that she was intrinsically Ms. Marvel beyond the personality change as she could display super powers, which consolidated her two personalities and provided her control over her abilities. Feeling at peace, Danvers and Barnett visited her mother in Boston and thereafter they went on a date. However, their engagement was disrupted by her fighting the troublemakers Sapper and Golden-Blade. (Ms. Marvel v1 #13) Still at her home city, Danvers saved her father in a dispute with Steeplejack about budget-cuts with the Monarch Plaza project. Afterward, her mother saw through her disguise and told her to give her ungrateful father another chance despite their difficult history. During her time in Boston, Geoffrey Ballard broke into Danvers' office. (Ms. Marvel v1 #14) Gianelli omitted information when Detective Jean DeWolff interviewed him about the burglary and admitted to Danvers and Burke he knew Ballard; he was a former big-shot in the CIA. Gianelli then went to Washington to dig for information. (Ms. Marvel v1 #15) Tormented by precognitive dreams about her dead, Danvers dealt with being overworked and stressed, though, during a snowball fight, she and Gianelli had an intimate moment and shared a kiss. Meanwhile, on a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Ballard and Mystique broke into the Centurion project to be able to assassinate Ms. Marvel. Whilst flying home, the hero was shot out of the sky by Ballard as the Centurion. (Ms. Marvel v1 #17) saved by the Avengers before being executed. As the battle raged across Manhattan, Mystique was urged to cease the assault on Ms. Marvel to prevent more failures and the risk of their discovery. Ms. Marvel defeated Centurion and unmasked him, realizing his unrevealed motivations implied that a war had just begun. (Ms. Marvel v1 #18)

Danvers came to experience strange dreams of the Supreme Intelligence and one day she was attacked in her office by Ronan the Accuser who had come to take her back to the Kree empire. Initially, she was overwhelmed by the Public Accuser but Mar-Vell arrived at the scene where he dropped his guard when Ronan seemingly was surrendering. However, the Accuser used that to capture both Mar-Vell and Ms. Marvel who were taken on a ship to the Kree empire. During transit, the Supreme Intelligence revealed that he intended to use Carol Danvers genetics to foster a race of new Kree and intended to wipe her mind as part of the process. She came to resist the brainwashing attempt and whilst Mar-Vell distracted Ronan she came to free herself and defeated the Accuser. Carol and Mar-Vell then returned to Earth where they parted as friends. (Ms. Marvel v1 #19)

Avenger

When the Scarlet Witch took a leave of absence, Ms. Marvel agreed to serve as her temporary replacement on the Avengers. Henry Peter Gyrich attempted to take her fingerprints stating that security arrangements to join the team were strict with the female superhero refusing as she did not want her secret identity exposed. Tony Stark offered a compromise by suggesting a retinal scan allowing for Ms. Marvel's true identity to remain hidden whilst containing a record to prevent an imposter from disguising themselves as her. (Avenger v1 #183)

As an Avenger, she came to cross paths with Jessica Jones again. Accidentally falling into the clutches of the mesmerizing Purple Man, Jones was forced to serve him as a brainwashed slave and attacked the Scarlet Witch. During the attack, she came back to her senses, but not before being violently pull out of action by the Avengers. Ms. Marvel rescued Jones from death for being able to recognize her as a hero. As a consequence, Jones abandoned the life of being a superhero due to these traumatic events. (Alias v1 #26)

She alongside Iron Man went to the home of her friend Michael Barnett who had been murdered with the two heroes attempting to find the culprit. A machine was used to replicate the circumstances of his death where it was shown that a metamorph that had taken Carol's form was responsible for beating Barnett to death before leaving with a file on Danvers. This led to Ms. Marvel vowing revenge and refused Iron Man's aid as she said that this was a private affair. Carol then attended Michael Barnett's funeral she began to receive premonitions of the future that showed her death. This led to her deciding to investigate the trail of weapons concerning the mysterious shapeshifter where as Ms. Marvel she stumbled upon the Hellfire Club and only barely managed to escape them. Afterwards, she trailed one of their operatives who was secretly selling arms to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Mystique. As Carol, she decided to go undercover by attracting the attention of the arms dealer Peter Coelho who had a weakness for beautiful women. The next day at their destination, she decided to meet with Peter only to be ambushed by two Mutant Brotherhood operatives that tried to kill her with Ms. Marvel managing to defeat them. She later discovered that Coelho had been murdered leaving the trail cold which was when she encountered another Brotherhood member named Rogue. Ms. Marvel put up a fight against the Mutant where Rogue attempted to siphon the superhero's power but her physical contact was too long causing her to absorb both Carol's minds and powers thus leaving her in a confused state whilst Danvers herself was rendered amnesiac as well as powerless. (Marvel Super-Heroes v2 #11)

Rogue attempted to murder the unconscious and soul-emptied Danvers by throwing her off the Golden Gate Bridge. Danvers was rescued by Spider-Woman, who caught her before impact. After swimming to shore with the comatose woman, Spider-Woman contacted the X-Men to Danvers' plight upon learning that her mind had become a tabula rasa. The memories stolen by Rogue were restored by mutant telepath Professor Charles Xavier, though he could not return the emotional bonds linked to those memories. Powerless and restarting her life, Carol Danvers rebuked the Avengers for having broken her trust by irresponsibly abandoning her. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)

Binary

Binary in Black Panther v7 #3.

Danvers became an ally of the X-Men – Xavier's team of mutant heroes. In the Bermuda Triangle, she accompanied Xavier in the search for Cyclops, the previous X-Men leader. Xavier lost telepathic contact with the rest of the X-Men and was kidnapped by his nemesis Magneto. Danvers spotted Magneto's Island, but was left behind with the rest of the crew on the damaged yacht where the X-Men were ultimately overwhelmed Magneto. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #150) They were set a secret base on the mysterious island. Reflecting on the event where she lost her powers, she was comforted by Logan, who was now the X-Man baptized Wolverine. He reminded her of their shared past, only to much exasperation since she could not bear any feelings about it. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #154) The crew of sideral pirates called Starjammers, who were allies to the X-Men, became close to Danvers. Dr. Corbeau monitored her sparring in a physical exercise with them and concluded that, when she gained superpowers, her genetic structure was permanently altered; she remained a perfect specimen despite being stripped of her powers. Despite her loss of powers, she was in superb physical form, only being restrained when the Starjammers ganged upon her. Later on, she watched anti-mutant politician Senator Kelly demonizing the X-Men on a talk show. In response, Danvers, Wolverine, and Storm infiltrated the Pentagon to destroy all record data about the X-Men. Dressed as military personnel, Danvers used her clout to act as a colonel. Walking towards the data banks, she ran into Rogue. She furiously tried to shoot Rogue, sparking a fight. While the X-Men took over the fight against Rogue, Danvers slipped away only to be followed by a disguised Mystique. Danvers managed to defeat Mystique to prevent the shape-shifter from murdering her. When uploading the Starjammers' data-erasing virus, Carol Danvers found her old personnel files, which she promptly deleted. Knowing she had become a different person, the old Carol Danvers and Ms. Marvel were no more. The mission was successful as she also deleted the X-Men's files despite the battle having further damaged their reputation. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #158)

Danvers genetic nature fascinated the Brood who sought to study her due to her being a unique anomaly with them performing experiments to enhance her evolutionary nature. This caused her body to change into various forms until she was found by Wolverine who freed her and she seemingly returned to normal. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #163)

She then decided to go to Avengers Mansion to attend games night and took Logan with her with the Avengers being overjoyed at seeing her. Whilst playing poker, they were joined the Avenger's newest recruit which was the new Captain Marvel named Monica Rambeau. It was only then that Carol learnt that Mar-Vell had died from cancer and in grief she fled the scene in her Binary form. From Mentor of Titan, she came to learn of Mar-Vell's grave where she paid her respects and mourned his passing. (Marvel Fanfare v1 #24)

The Starjammers later came to learn that Deathbird was seeking out the legendary power of the mythical Phalkon. Thus, they participated in the quest to find it before her where Binary accompanied Raza Longknife to the planet Ch'rp to find one of the map pieces. (X-Men: Spotlight on...Starjammers v1 #1) The Starjammer was later attacked by Deathbird and her forces with Binary arriving to provide much needed support where she battled the Imperial Guardsman Zenith. Though dispatching her opponent, the Starjammers failed in stopping Deathbird from obtaining the map pieces and draining the ship of its energy reserves whereupon they fled to acquire the Phalkon. Binary then used her power to restart the ships energy systems where they came to determine that the Phalkon resided on Earth and made their way there. It was then that they learnt that the mythical power of the Phalkon was none other than the Phoenix Force which now resided within Rachel Summers. Excalibur came to battle the Starjammers after mistakenly believing them to be part of a Shi'ar plot to get revenge against the Phoenix. The fighting between the two teams allowed for Deathbird to summon the rest of her Imperial Guard who battled both her foes with Binary being defeated by Gladiator. This allowed Deathbird to claim the power of the Phoenix but she was injured by Lilandra thus leading to her forces taking her through a teleporter back to safety. In the aftermath, the Starhammers resumed their mission in leading the rebellion against Deathbird's rule where they used the symbol of the Phalkon as part of the insurgency against the Shi'ar empire. (X-Men: Spotlight on...Starjammers v1 #2)

She made her way to intercept the Nega-Bomb when she encountered Ayesha who mistook her for an enemy leading to a battle between the pair by the Stargate. Their fight was only stopped by the arrival of Quasar who revealed that he was delayed due to having to prevent Earth's Sun from detonating. Rushing back to Earth's Sun, she discovered that Quasar's efforts to stabilise it were not enough and she had to rely on her own powers to repair the damage to it. This caused her to exhaust her Binary powers to remove the corruptive anti-matter within the star that was going to destroy it but fell unconscious in the process. Carol nearly died but Quasar rescued her where he took her to a hospital on Earth where she was left in the care of the Avengers. (Quasar v1 #34)

Warbird

Afterwards, she came to feel her powers behaving differently and decided to see Beast at Avengers Mansion who conducted tests on her. He determined that her powers had definitely decreased and that she was unlikely to become Binary again with this confirming Carols' suspicions as she began to consider a new code-name for her superhero identity. (Avengers v3 #4) Fearing her weakened status would render her of no value to the team, she kept hiding the truth from her teammates, being a problematic addition. Her reckless attitude jeopardized the team during a fight against the Squadron Supreme, since Captain America had believed he could count with her Binary power levels. (Avengers v3 #5) Simultaneously, she took up drinking, irresponsibly going drunk to the subsequent investigation on the Squadron Supreme. Although collaborative to solve the mystery of the villain Corruptor in manipulating Squadron Supreme, Warbird acted blatantly arrogant and rude toward her teammates. (Avengers v3 #6) She then left to stay at her family home in the suburb community located to the north of Boston. Iron Man came to her house in order to help her where he revealed his identity as Tony Stark to her. He then confronted her over her drinking habits and believed that she had become an alcoholic with an outraged Danvers telling Stark to leave her home. After getting drunk, she then went to Stark's manufacturing plant as Warbird where she shouted at him over his accusations but came to realise that she had crossed a line. It was then that the site came under attack from the Kree warriors of the Lunatic Legion. (Iron Man v3 #7) Seeking approval, she tackled the Lunatic Legion by herself. As she contacted Captain America, she was reprimanded for having acted solo before being trapped and kidnapped. (Captain America v3 #8)

Mighty Avenger

Carol was chosen by Stark to head the new Mighty Avengers superhero team with her accepting though she had reservations on some of her teammates but was overruled by Tony who ultimately controlled the group. (Mighty Avengers v1 #1) Following a DNA bomb attack from A.I.M., Carol became focused on stopping the renegade science based crime organization but she also came to struggle what her purpose was as a hero until she met her publicist. This led to her deciding to going to Director Stark and having him authorising an elite strike force named Operation: Lightning Storm that consisted of selected agents and heroes that would use S.H.I.E.L.D. files to be proactive against threats. (Ms. Marvel v2 #13)

With the defeat of the Skrulls, Norman Osborn was hailed a hero of the world for slaying the alien queen Veranke with S.H.I.E.L.D. being disbanded and a new peacekeeping organization being formed called H.A.M.M.E.R.. Director Osborn was in charge of the organization and he sought to create a new team of superheroes which were the Dark Avengers. Ms. Marvel was tasked with leading the team but she refused as she did not wish to work with Osborn due to his supervillain history leading to her resigning. Unknown to her, Carol's position on the team was then replaced with Moonstone who was given a version of the Ms. Marvel costume. (Dark Avengers v1 #1) When Danielle Cage was recovered from the Skrulls, Ms. Marvel assisted the heroes in taking Jessica Jones and the baby to safety way from Norman Osborn. (New Avengers v1 #49) She rendezvoused with the other fugitive superheroes at Captain America's secret base where they witnessed the public announcement of Osborn's team of Avengers where they managed to determine that it consisted largely of supervillains. It was decided by the team to ambush the Dark Avengers by luring them into a trap at an abandoned Hellfire Club base where Carol had intended to use a Starktech power inhibitor to temporarily stop Osborn's team. However, Norman had anticipated this ambush and instead leaked information to the Hood whose gang of supervillains attacked where they swarmed the heroes. Ms. Marvel then asked Spider-Woman to use her venom blast on her so that she could redirect it against the horde of supervillains thus stunning them all and allowing the superheroes to quickly escape. (New Avengers v1 #50) Barton later decided that their Avengers team needed leadership with Carol declining the role though she agreed to have Clint be their leader with him making her his second-in-command. (New Avengers v1 #51) They then encountered a wounded Doctor Strange who escaped a demonically possessed Hood who was looking to claim the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Strange had decided to seek a successor to his former role and intended to pass the Eye of Agamotto to them with the New Avengers deciding to assist him as it meant dealing with the Hood. (New Avengers v1 #52) They later arrived in New Orleans where their Quinjet was shot down by Madame Masque whilst the Hood made his move to try and claim the Eye. (New Avengers v1 #53)

Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers in Mighty Captain Marvel v1 #1.

Captain America later attempted to convince her to claim the mantle of Captain Marvel with Carol initially being reluctant before accepting it. (Captain Marvel v7 #1)

After her fight with Deathbird, Carol was in the hospital where a full check-up was made on her. The doctors came to find a strange lesion in her brain that seemed to move deeper every time she used her abilities. It was believed that this would eventual trigger a brain haemorrhage and though her healing factor would recover it would result in her losing all her memories in the process. (Captain Marvel v7 #11)

In her anger, she confronted this new 'Deathbird' leading to a long fight between the pair that ended on the rooftop with Carol managing to defeat her foe. However, the strain caused from overuse of her powers left her in agony and she came to see her opponent disappear but not before the fake 'Deathbird' revealed that she was working on behalf of her mysterious master. (Captain Marvel v7 #12)

She then came to find out that the perpetrator of the attack was none other than the reborn Yon-Rogg who was manifesting an arsenal of Kree technology to transform the city into a new Kree-Lar. Carol was captured and she was quick to determine that Yon-Rogg's rebirth was because of the piece of the Psyche-Magnitron that resided in her brain. Over the years, he had managed to grow stronger the more it grew inside her head allowing him to attain physical form. To stop him using her powers for his goals, Captain Marvel overextended her abilities by going into orbit into she depleted her abilities leaving Yon-Rogg powerless. (Captain Marvel v7 #14)

Carol was later appointed the head of the first line of planetary defence that became Alpha Flight. (Captain Marvel v9 #1) Afterwards, she sought to create a related proactive strike force with a team that sought out potential threats and resolve them before they became a danger to Earth. This team were to apply non-violent solutions whenever possible with this being a proposal that Captain Marvel brought to several superheroes. These included Black Panther, Blue Marvel, Spectrum and Ms. America who came to form the Ultimates. (Ultimates v2 #8)

She and Iron Patriot later responded to an incident where a missile was seemingly launched at Earth. Upon investigating, they found it was a craft containing an alien where an investigation revealed that she was actually a refugee from a world destroyed during the Builder War. Iron Man then spoke to Carol about having a more formal Avenger presence in space with Captain Marvel being asked to take up the task with Danvers agreeing as she felt she needed some time alone. (Captain Marvel v8 #1) She responded to a crisis on the planet Torfa that was settled by refugees from the galactic conflict who were being threatened by the Spartoi empire. This was because the planet had reserves of Vibranium that the Spartax wanted to claim for themselves but Captain Marvel destroyed them to make the world useless to the invaders. (Captain Marvel v8 #6) She managed to arrive on Spartax where she saved Star-Lord from his father J'son the ruler of Spartax. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #16)

Carol attempted to come to terms with the recent crisis and her fight with Iron Man whilst seeking therapy. In the mean time, she continued leading Alpha Flight in the midst of a refugee crisis as displaced people from three galaxies were attempting to find shelter with many coming to Earth. (Mighty Captain Marvel v1 #0) This was the result of attacks from the ruthless Chitauri which had left many people homeless and displaced entire planetary populations. On Earth, Carol came to discover an attempt to kidnap a Kree child in the refugee came who went by the name of Bean. (Mighty Captain Marvel v1 #1)

Her home came under attack from a Kree Kleaner that was targeting her mother who was revealed to actually be a Kree warrior in disguise. It was then that Carol learnt her true origin as her mother had been sent as an infiltrator to Earth but fell in love with her father. Carol was thus naturally part-Kree and had inherited great powers from her mother. (Life of Captain Marvel v2 #4)

Marvelous

Captain Marvel returned to Earth, but her leave of absence on space had an impact on her public perception. Iron Man put her in contact with Ripley Ryan for an interview, during which Captain Marvel reconnected with Jim Rhodes but was also challenged by the Nuclear Man. (Captain Marvel v10 #1) He kidnapped Ripley ant took her to an area surrounding Roosevelt Island inaccessible to males, which was under his total control. Captain Marvel followed them, getting trapped alongside many other female super heroes, including Hazmat, a deadly superhuman Iron Man had asked her to advise. The female rebellion had intelligence from Som the Nuclear Man's son. (Captain Marvel v10 #2) Captain Marvel assumed the leadership of the resistance and prepared the survivors to fight back. Infiltrating the villain's Citadel, she assessed a laboratory where manned Metal-Men units were produced, but was caught in an ambush as an alarm went off. Staying behind to cover Som and Spider-Woman's escape. (Captain Marvel v10 #3) She was traumatically forced to fight a mind-controlled Rogue, for the Nuclear Man wished to test a bride to birth him strong offspring. The rebellion launched a final attack on the citadel, and Captain Marvel allowed Rogue to absorb her essence to overpower the Nuclear Man. (Captain Marvel v10 #4) Restored to their bodies, Captain Marvel and Rogue assisted the rebellion, leading a cornered Nuclear Man to teleport himself and his son away. After the barrier was put down, Captain Marvel and all of the female prisoners returned safely. (Captain Marvel v10 #5)

Back from Roosevelt Island, Ryan wrote a piece about Captain Marvel being an incompetent hero, which coincided with the revelation of her mother's origins to the public. Accused to be an alien traitor, Captain Marvel was expelled from the military, resigned from Alpha Flight and experienced a drastic reduction in her power levels. When combating monstrous Krakens-like vessels of Kree origin, she felt weak and was outperformed by a new super hero going by the name of Star. Iron Man identified a Kree device within Captain Marvel's chest draining her powers. With her human life falling apart, Captain Marvel was approached by Doctor Minerva, who recognized her as a fellow Kree warrior. In Minerva's secret lab, Captain Marvel found out she had designed the monsters. (Captain Marvel v10 #9) This was all part of a plan to undermine Captain Marvel's reputation, which included empowering Star with Captain Marvel's energies through the devices vectored by the Krakens. This prompted Captain Marvel to confront Star in Times Square, when she removed the device in her chest to sever Star from her own powers and learned that Star was Ripley Ryan. However, Star could siphon power from all the people exposed to the Krakens' attacks, dangerously draining their energies instead. (Captain Marvel v10 #10) Reconnected to device in order to prevent Star from killing innocent people, Captain Marvel was forced to rip Star's own device to finally arrest her. The ordeal had people trust in Captain Marvel again. (Captain Marvel v10 #11)

Pressured by the rising numbers of Kree refugees due to the destruction of Hala, Captain Marvel fell to Vox Supreme, who bonded her to a controlling suit and blackmailed her into terminating the Avengers, threatening to detonate explosives within all of the Kree refugees' camps. Using S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Project Gemini, Captain Marvel tricked Vox Supreme with dead clones of the Avengers for him to harvest their DNA, while keeping the real Avengers protected within Singularity. (Captain Marvel v10 #13) During the battle with She-Hulk, she managed to defeat her foe and took both Jen along with T'Challa into the pocket dimension inside Singularity. Carol then confronted Captain America who decided to trust her in doing the right thing and allowed himself to be captured. Captain Marvel then took the cloned copies of her friends to Vox on the Gray Area of the Moon where the villain rendered Carol unconscious. He then revealed his true goal of using the super-powered Avengers to help him spawn a master race of Kree to rule the cosmos. (Captain Marvel v10 #15) The captured Captain Marvel activated a device made by Iron Man to destroy her suit and stagger Vox Supreme. When Vox Supreme used his powers to throw Captain Marvel at the tube filled with Avengers' DNA, she was temporarily infused with their powers and was able to successfully trap her captor within a confinement coffin meant to cage her. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel's allies disposed of the bombs from the Kree camps to avoid further casualties, saving the day. (Captain Marvel v10 #16)

Afterwards, Tony Stark experienced dreams of the Cotati massacre and came to realise that this was a telepathic message from the Moon. This led to the Avengers investigating the Blue Area that became filled with plant life with them battling a Kree Sentry piloted by a Skrull mutation. It was then that they met the Cotati Swordsmen and the Celestial Messiah Sequoia who revealed that the Cotati had come to the Moon with them facing the threat of the Kree as well as Skrulls who had formed the Alliance. Carol was ill at ease with the situation but Iron Man convinced the others to stand by the Cotati's side against their enemy. (Empyre v1 #0) The Alliance then arrived in the solar system with the Avengers battling them and held the enemy back. However, it was revealed that the Cotati were the aggressors and had manipulated the Avengers into fighting their foes. (Empyre v1 #1) This was because the Celestial Messiah was leading his people in a war against all animal races. This saw them manipulating all plant life on the Alliance fleet and causing it to sprout and turn against the ships respective crew. Thus, the Avengers supported the Kree and Skrulls with Captain Marvel helping purge the Alliance command ship of its infestation. The Kree Pursuer Tanalth the Pursuer then decided that Carol should embrace her heritage and gave her the hammer of the fallen Supreme Accuser Ronan. Becoming an Accuser, she was to help lead the Kree efforts in battling the Cotati whose war had now engulfed the Earth. (Empyre v1 #2) After dealing with a Cotati ship, she was dispatched by Emperor Dorrek VIII to the Alliance colony of Mar-Da'en that had a sanctuary city for both Kree and Skrulls. The city had been devastated by a Kree warrior with Carol being asked to enact a sentence against them where she came to find that the perpetrator was her Kree-born half-sister Lauri-Ell who claimed to had been innocent of the crime. Rather than kill her, Carol took her away on her ship as she decided on her next course of action. (Captain Marvel v10 #18) In addition, an inexplicable change came over Hulkling when he ordered the use of the Pyre that was a superweapon which would detonate Earth's Sun. Carol initially believed that Hulkling was replaced by a shapeshifter but the Universal Weapon showed no evidence of such a tactic. It was then that Emperor Hulkling had his court mage teleport the Avengers off the Alliance flagship with Carol finding herself in Teddy Altman's apartment where they met Wiccan. Catching up to events, Wiccan revealed that Hulkling had been replaced and was not the person they encountered on the flagship with the heroes rushing to stop the Alliance from destroying Earth in the mad bid to destroy the Cotati. (Empyre v1 #4)

Overview

Personality and attributes

U.S. Airforce officer in Avengers v8 #4.
The legacy of Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel v7 #6.

Her full name was Carol Susan Jane Danvers. (Iron Man v3 #7) Unknown to her initially, her actual name given to her by her mother was Car-Ell that meant Champion on Hala. (Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #4) When sh worked with Logan, he came to give her the nickname of Ace due to her skill as an agent. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #237) Following the Brood's experimentation on her, she felt that she had no place on Earth or her human identity where for a time she came to go by the name of Binary. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164) For a time, she took on the superhero name of Warbird which stemmed from her liking planes and fighter jets from childhood. (Iron Man v3 #7)

From her youth, she was known to loved planes and made countless models of them including warbird fighter jets. (Iron Man v3 #7) She had always wanted to be an astronaut as she desired to explore space, discover new worlds and civilizations. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164)

For most of her adult life, she believed that she had walked hand-in-hand with the Reaper as she had killed and nearly been killed on many different occasions. She came to believe that she had left that life behind after she had left NASA and the Air Force. (Marvel Super-Heroes v2 #11)

For a time, she began to suffer from a case of amnesia when she transformed into her Ms. Marvel form. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) Her other personality was that of a Kree who believed she was raised on Kree-Lar and trained to be brutal in dispatching enemies. (Ms. Marvel v1 #8) The two personas came to somewhat coexist with one another but there were periods where they struggled for dominance of the body. The Kree portion was able to force a transformation into Ms. Marvel though this was a psychic wrench that their collective mind suffered from whenever this happened between the two minds. (Ms. Marvel v1 #10) The Kree part of him had no compunction against killing or hurting her enemies but was held back by the Carol Danvers side. (Ms. Marvel v1 #11) Though part Kree, she ultimately believed that she was a human at heart. (Ms. Marvel v1 #19)

Unknown to her, her mother was actually a highly skilled Kree warrior whose real name was Mari-Ell and had been sent to infiltrate Earth long ago but fell in love with widower Joseph Danvers. She ultimately abandoned her mission and chosen to live as a human where she became a mother to his two children with her later giving birth to her daughter. (Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #4) She had a brother by the name of Steve Danvers. As a result, she always felt both part of and yet apart from her family due to her constant fights with her father. (Ms. Marvel v1 #19)

She had considered her Avenger colleagues had betrayed her during the events regarding Marcus. (Marvel Super-Heroes v2 #11)

For a time, she came to be involved with Wonder Man when the two were working together on the Mighty Avengers. (Mighty Avengers v1 #6) Carol was noted for liking and being attracted to Spider-Man. (Siege: Spider-Man v1 #1) She later came to be romantically involved with James Rhodes. (Captain Marvel v8 #1)

Carol later came to learn that her Kree mother's genetics were once mated with another Kree warrior with this leading to the birth of her half-sister Lauri-Ell. Danvers never knew her sibling who was born and bred to serve as a warrior of the Kree empire. (Captain Marvel v10 #18)

Another person she held as her personal hero was Helen Cobb who was a pilot that had 15 speed records by the time she retired. Carol always envied those records and wanted to surpass them. Her kid brother Stevie Danvers was responsible for introducing her to Helen back when they were younger. After she died, Carol attended the funeral and dispersed her remains in space as she knew that was Helen's fondest wish. (Captain Marvel v7 #3)

Danvers was distraught to had learnt about the death of Mar-Vell at the hands of cancer and that she was not there for him. This was because she believed that he and her had a special relationship. Carol believed that it was possible that her body could have had a means of saving him and thus lamented not being there for Mar-Vell. (Marvel Fanfare v1 #24)

One of her biggest fans was a young blonde girl named Katherine Ann Renner who dressed in a Captain Marvel costume with her calling herself Lieutenant Trouble. (Captain Marvel v7 #10) The young girl saw herself as Captain Marvel's sidekick and wanted to learn to be a hero like her. (Captain Marvel v7 #17)

Carol later came to learn that her cat Chewie was actually a member of an alien race known as a Flerken. The species appeared as domestic felines of Earth but were able to open their mouths to release many large tentacles tat they could use to capture food. They were noted for being rare and dangerous with the species reproducing by laying eggs. (Captain Marvel v8 #8)

Powers and abilities

Wielding a Universal Weapon in Captain Marvel v10 #18.
Manipulating energy in Captain Marvel v8 #1.

It was said that she was a world-class agent. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #237)

Unknown to anyone, her powers were actually a natural part of her genetic make-up as she was part-Kree from her mothers side. (Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #4) Carol was said to be the synthesis of the best elements of both the human and Kree races. (Marvel Fanfare v1 #24) She possessed a purple coated organ known as the Third Lobe that was Kree physiology sandwiched between the two hemispheres of her brain. It was said that her extra-human abilities all emanated from this aspect of her physiology. (Captain Marvel v7 #12)

This meant that she became somewhat of a genetic anomaly as she was neither Mutant nor baseline Human with her genetic matrix being unique. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #163) Following that contact, she gained the powers of the Kree warrior race with these included super-strength, flight and a strange seventh sense. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) Her body was capable of enduring an impressive 92 tons of impact with this not even being her limit. (Avengers v3 #41) Originally, her costume automatically created an energy field that protected her from the cold vacuum of space and radiation whilst providing a breathable atmosphere for her as well. (Ms. Marvel v1 #3) Her body was able to absorb heat as energy that could surge into her body's system and help jumpstart her heart. (Captain Marvel v7 #10) Initially, her ability to fly was derived from the advanced webbing of her costume but a second blast of radiation from the Psyche-Magnitron transferred the power to Carol Danvers allowing her to naturally fly on her own power. (Ms. Marvel v1 #7) When she became Captain Marvel, she demonstrated some ability to survive in the vacuum of space but required an air supply in order to continue to function. (Captain Marvel v7 #1)

For a time, she possessed a Seventh Sense that vaguely alerted her of danger and allowed her to respond to it. It also warned her of threats at a great distance where she could help others that were under attack. This power allowed her to track her targets if she concentrated on using it. (Ms. Marvel v1 #1) As such, the Seventh Sense allowed her to anticipate an opponent's attack before it occurred. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2) This power became a form of precognition as she could witness dangerous events occurred in the upcoming future. This was described as a psychic power whereby she only could sense danger but not determine the true nature of the threat. (Ms. Marvel v1 #5) It was said that her powers were the same as Mar-Vell in that she was able to sense changes to the fabric of the universe itself allowing her to feel danger from cosmic forces. (Ultimates 2 v2 #1)

Thus, she was able to absorb ambient energy with this powering her strength, flight and photonic abilities at an impressive level. With an energy source, she could temporarily boost those power levels to well beyond her baseline abilities. (Avengers v3 #41) She was shown to be capable of absorbing the energy of a thermonuclear warhead that detonated in front of her. (Mighty Avengers v1 #6) In one case, she was able to absorb Spider-Woman's venom blast and redirect it to strike specific enemies whilst leaving her comrades unharmed. (New Avengers v1 #50) Carol was able to also absorb the electrical energy in the brain of a person though this typically killed all but the most powerful of opponents. (Captain Marvel v10 #15) Due to her body's tendency to absorb energy, it was at times difficult to get a brain scan from her. (Captain Marvel v7 #11) In fact, her body producing electromagnetic radiation made any form of scan of her somewhat problematic. (Captain Marvel v7 #12) Danvers could also amplify herself by merging with the energy form of Monica Rambeau as part of a joint technique. By transforming into energy, Carol could absorb her and greatly increase her own power for a short time until the two separated. Whilst merged, Monica could see into Carol's inner thoughts. (Captain Marvel v7 #8) Magic though was said to be a source of energy that she could not properly channel and could kill her. (Ms. Marvel v2 #5)

The evolutionary modifications of the Brood activated latent abilities within herself leading to her transformation into Binary. This allowed her to tap into a white whole with her energy source being the primal fabric of the universe itself. In this form, she was said to hold the functional equivalent power of a star. This allowed her to generate light, heat, radiation from across the spectrum, and gravity with her perception of reality being much greater. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #164) She said that in this state she had far more power than she had as Ms. Marvel. (Marvel Fanfare v1 #24) In fact, it was said that there was no limit to her power as Binary. (X-Men: Spotlight on...Starjammers v1 #2) Danvers could create a white hole that was able to vacuum away any anti-matter in an area. (Quasar v1 #34) Despite seemingly losing them, she still retained the power to connect to local white holes allowing its flat energies to bolster her own with nominal risks to the universe. However, such connections had the real risk of potentially extinguishing life in newly-formed universes across the white hole. (Secret Avengers v1 #28)

Her costume had a retractable faceplate that activated and covered her eyes when needed. The sash she wore around her waist was made of a Stark designed fabric and impermeable allowing her to use it in battle as a means of suffocating enemies till they passed out and harmless. (Captain Marvel v7 #1) Her original costume was said to contain a sophisticated electronic webbing that apparently enhanced her natural ability to sail the planet's electromagnetic field thus allowing her to fly in a way unknown to Earth understanding by a means of science that was light years ahead of mankind. (Ms. Marvel v1 #2)

At one time, she was made a Kree Accuser and was given the Universal Weapon of Ronan. This powerful weapon allowed her to emit energy blasts from it and intercept shots. It was also able to delving into the mind of others in order to determine their level of guilt. (Captain Marvel v10 #18) It was capable of conducting a full genetic scan on another person in order to discern their identity and attempt to determine if a person was a shapeshifter in disguise. (Empyre v1 #4)

For a time, she was forced to use a hover cycle to travel as the use of her powers was promoting a brain lesion to grow. (Captain Marvel v7 #11)

At one point, she came to operate from the crown of the Statue of Liberty that included living quarters for her. (Captain Marvel v8 #1) For a time, she came to operate from Minicarrier 13 that was a small helicarrier and served as the headquarters for her Operation: Lightning Storm. (Ms. Marvel v2 #13)

Notes

  • Carol Danvers was created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan where she made her first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #13 (March, 1968).
  • She debuted as Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel v1 #1 (January, 1977) then as Binary Uncanny X-Men v1 #164 (December 1982) and as Captain Marvel in Avenging Spider-Man v1 #9 (September, 2012).
  • The Life of Captain Marvel v2 (2018) provided a retcon to her origins with it stating that she was naturally part-Kree and was not given her powers from the Psyche-Magnitron.
  • Writer Gerry Conway commented on the characters debut as Ms. Marvel, "Carol Danvers had never really had much play in the original [Captain Marvel] series,” Conway said, “but I felt that she had potential because, unlike some of the female characters that we had in other series, she wasn’t somebody’s girlfriend; she wasn’t somebody’s daughter. She was a security officer on the base, and as such had her own distinct role to play. She seemed like a natural to be given powers and upgraded to her own solo title. There were definite attempts to create this kind of feminist role model,” Conway said. “And very specifically on the first or second page of the book, I had a small girl character react to Ms. Marvel’s arrival, going ‘Wow. She’s really cool. I wanna be like her when I grow up,’ which was intended to say, ‘Hey, we’re trying to reach a female audience, and we’re looking for girls to be as inspired by comics as boys." He also noted that in an attempt to tie into modern feminism that he worked closely with his wife at the time Carla Conway on the concept where it was decided to name the character Ms. Marvel rather than Miss with this being a direct tribute to to modern feminism was a given to Conway and Marvel, considering the intended audience, and the writer worked closely with his wife at the time, Carla Conway, on the concept. Naming the character Ms. Marvel, rather than Miss, was a direct tribute to Gloria Steinem and Ms.
  • In an interview with writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, she stated that, “Carol falls down all the time but she always gets back up — we say that about Captain America as well, but Captain America gets back up because it’s the right thing to do. Carol gets back up because ‘Fuck you.’”
  • When she became Captain Marvel, artist Jamie McKelvie re-designed the characters costume. DeConnick noted that, “It looks like she’s in a superhero branch of the military, the dress uniform for the superhero branches of the military. It’s kind of dignified but also utilitarian.”

Alternate Versions

  • In The Age of the Sentry v1 #2 (2008), an alternate version of Carol Danvers was shown to exist on the world designated as Earth-1611. • In Civil War: House of M v1 #5 (2009), an alternate version of Carol Danvers was shown to inhabit the House of M in the world designated as Earth-58163. She was shown as a high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent for years who gained her powers but hid them from the world. During the Mutant-Human War, she fought alongside her fellow agents but did not reveal her powers as she feared the reaction of other humans. The fear of this prejudice led to her becoming a spy for Magneto who granted her the honorary status of being a Mutant hero after the war ended and he came to rule the world. This led to him naming her Captain Marvel who became a champion to both Mutants and Humans in the world where she became very popular despite lacking the X-Gene.
