The Expanded Universe of Doctor Who includes the original novels, comics and audios.

The first original Doctor Who novels were two published in the series The Companions of Doctor Who by Target in 1986 featuring the Doctor's companions, followed by a trilogy based on unproduced episodes from the Sixth Doctor's run (The Missing Episodes). However, the distinct novel continuity truly began with Virgin Publishing's The New Doctor Who Adventures and its companion line, The Missing Adventures, published by Virgin Publishing. BBC Books took over both lines after the release of the TV movie, and continues to publish them today. (Virgin went on to publish a spin-off series called The New Adventures featuring original character Bernice Summerfield.) Other licensed Doctor Who novels were produced for a time by Telos, and a line of anthologies have been produced by Big Finish.

Doctor Who comics originated with a series of comic strips in the 1960s and 1970s, but the main comic series has been the one published through the present day by Marvel UK since the late 1970s as part of their Doctor Who Weekly (later Doctor Who Monthly and Doctor Who Magazine). Several of the stories were also reprinted in the U.S. Marvel titles Marvel Premiere and Doctor Who (which lasted 23 issues). The magazine was picked up by Panini Comics in 1995.

Doctor Who audios include The Pescatons from the 1970s, and a handful of later radio plays (all adopted in novel format). More recently, a series of audio plays featuring the Fifth through Eighth Doctors have been produced by Big Finish, featuring many of the actors from the original series. A number of spin-off series, such as Sarah Jane Smith, Dalek Empire, Gallifrey, UNIT and Doctor Who Unbound have also been produced.

Connections

Various novel, comic and audio lines have featured characters originally created in the Doctor Who novels- these include Bernice Summerfield, Faction Paradox, Miranda and Time Hunter. The Doctor encountered elements of the Cthulhu Mythos (including the Necronomicon) in the novels White Darkness, All-Consuming Fire, Millennial Rites and The Banquo Legacy. (However, their Great Old Ones differ from the Mythos conception- further, in the novel The Taking of Planet Five, H.P. Lovecraft's works appeared to be fictional.) White Darkness also featured Lt. Dietz from The Land That Time Forgot, and made reference to the Rihanssu from the Star Trek Expanded Universe. In All-Consuming Fire, the Doctor encountered Sherlock Holmes, Lord John Roxton (from The Lost World) and Charles Beauregard (from Seven Stars)- reference was also made to Inspector Cribb and the Si Fan organization (from the Fu Manchu novels). (These connections provide a strong link to the Wold Newton Universe.) Millennial Rites had cameos by Doctor Strange (from the Marvel Universe) and John Constantine (from the Vertigo universe). Other novels with references include The Pit (a reference is made to Hob's End from Quatermass), No Future (reference is made to the Vodyanoi from The Nightmare Man) and Verdigris (reference is made to Tara King from The Avengers). The short story "Prisoners of the Sun," from Decalog, makes references to UNCLE, NEMESIS, SHADO, and has an appearance by John Ridge from Doomwatch. The short story "Housewarming", from Decalog 2, makes reference to Mulder and Scully from X-Files. In the Telos novella Foreign Devils, the Doctor teamed up with Carnacki.

During the course of the Marvel UK magazine stories, the Doctor met a time-and-dimension-displaced Death's Head (originally from the Marvel U.K. Transformers comic) and briefly visited the Marvel Universe.
