In his youth, D'Artagnan wished to follow in the footsteps of his late father and become a Musketeer in the service of the King of France. However, by the time he travelled to Paris and made to join, the Musketeers had been disbanded by the Cardinal Richielieu. But he soon had a new chance to join the Musketeers when three of their former members- Athos, Porthos, and Aramus- challenged D'Artagnan to separate duels. These duels brought them together to battle Richielieu and his plans to overthrow the King. Together, they defeated Richielieu, and recreated the Musketeers.

D'Artagnan rose to become the leader of the Musketeers. Years later, as King Louis XIII grew more corrupt, the retired Athos, Porthos, and Aramus enacted a plan to replace the corrupt king with his twin, Philippe, who had been imprisoned in the Bastille as "the Man in the Iron Mask" by his brother. D'Artagnan was torn between his friends and his duty, but in the end, he chose Philippe and his friends. He was slain defending Philippe from his twin.

The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)

D'Artagnan and Queen Marie of France fell in love, and had twin children. This fact was never made known to the king, who thought them his own. The twins were split up to avoid a possible war between the brothers when they grew up, and D'Artagnan saw his one son, Louis XIII, grow to become a corrupt tyrant of a ruler. He tried to make his son into the great man he wished he could be, and resisted his passion for Marie, until things reached a head with the plans of Athos, Porthos and Aramus.
