History

The Dominion were a human civilisation that came to form on the planet of Coda. Their origins were traced to long ago when mankind was enslaved by brutal aliens known as the Urgoth. This was until the creation of the Javelin where the first of these machines was worn by Helena Tarsis. Under her command, she rallied humanity into an army known as the Legion of Dawn that rose against their enslavers thus freeing them to form their own civilisation. However, General Tarsis herself died with this splintering the Legion which became divided into three factions that included the Dominion, the Sentinels and the Freelancers. Legionnaire Magna Stral was responsible for leading the group that became the Dominion where he along with his followers established their own empire and kingdom that was centred at Stralheim in the north. Unknown to many, the Dominion had to contend with attacks from the Urgoth on their territory. At some point, they pioneered the development of a new kind of Javelin known as the Storm. This used seal technology to boost the latent kinetic abilities of its pilot. The designs were later reverse engineered allowing for the Storm to be built in other parts of Bastion where it came to be used by the Freelancers.

Seeking to control the Anthem of Creation, the Dominion's top scientist Doctor Harken had created a device that could allow control over Shaper relics. They later came to learn that one such relic resided within the city of Freemark with this being the Cenotaph. Seeking to acquire it, an army was dispatched to lay siege to the city where they launched a surprise attack on it thus catching its contingent of Freelancers and Sentinels unaware. The defenders managed to put up a level of resistance to the Dominion but their foes managed to break into the city where they went into the depths to reach the secret chamber containing the Cenotaph. Harken then placed his device on the relic but failed to control the Anthem leading instead to the formation of a powerful Cataclysm known a the Heart of Rage. The incident led to the disappearance of the Dominion for several years afterwards with no sighting of their activities by Fort Tarsis.

Years later, the Dominion were once more active in the south with their attacks being overseen by the Monitor who had survived the Heart of Rage.

Overview

The Dominion army.

In appearance, the Dominion was an expansionist militaristic regime that sought control over all of Coda. They were referred to as being conquerors from the north of Fort Tarsis. Technologically, they were noted for their advancements but their methods showed little regard to life or individuality. It was said that freedom was preferably to living under the tyranny of Dominion rule.

A Dominion Prayer was:

We thank thee, Sistrum, for showing us the way.
For bringing us the warmth of your capacity.
Oh sisters three, let us rejoice in you,
and bring the world, as you brought us,
into your sight.

In "Our Ascendancy', some of the philosophical beliefs of the Dominion were detailed. Those in the north acknowledged that fear existed in everyone but that they used it for a greater purpose. To them, fear was the root of courage which in turn was the root of strength. The Dominion's path was that of might and that mankind's path to knowing was not to hide but rather to dominate. In fact, they believed that humanity's purpose was to follow the Shaper's into greatness and make the world as they saw fit.

Failure could result in a person being submitted to serve for augmentation and forced to take part in biological experimentation. The Dominion was known to take prisoners and kept them detained in camps.

Their military forces consisted:

  • Shocktroopers : standard infantry forces used by the Dominion where they wore masked uniforms and armour with sigils with them accompanying their elite forces in battle.
  • Argent Troopers' :
  • Valkyries : highly trained pilots that used Javelins that utilised Seals created by the Dominion allowing them to channel the elements. The technology used to create them was reverse engineered to create the Storm Javelins. The highest echelon among Valkyries were those that held the position among the Elementalists.
  • Brutes :
  • Furies : the result of biological experiments on human test subjects and using the Anthem of Creation. Whispers spoke of a factory where chosen prisoners were taken to 'serve the cause' where they were exposed to the Anthem through Shaper relics to create creature with destructive capabilities.

An elite group within the Dominion were figures known as the Monitors that headed military efforts. Those selected for their ranks underwent special training to make them part of the near-omniscient secret police force. It was remarked that Monitors were deadly figures within the Dominion's forces.

The Dominion believed in harnessing the power of the Anthem of Creation and saw themselves as the chosen ones who could claim these instruments of the Shapers. Their victory against the urgoth was seen as only the beginning of their mastery of this power. Its citizens also came to believe that the humans of the southern regions were soft and weak compared to them.

It was known that they made use of Strider mechs that were large four-legged walkers that served as transports. These machines were armed with weapons allowing them to be used in sieges.

Their belief in harnessing the Anthem of Creation's power led to them engaging in numerous biological experiments.

Their empire was centred at the city of Stralheim located in the north. The homeland of the Dominion was noted for its colder climate when compared to the south.

  • Magna Stral : member of the Legion of Dawn who after General Tarsis's death splintered from the group where he founded the Dominion.
  • Armas Brom : a high ranking male who attained the rank of the Monitor where he led the efforts in trying to claim the Cenotaph in Bastion so that he could harness the power of the Anthem of Creation but was killed by the Freelancer.
  • Vara Brom : a female military officer who was the sister of Armas Brom where she was known as the Spear with her commanding the Valkyries that journeyed with the expedition to Bastion. She was feared throughout the north for leading bold aerial attacks against heavily fortified targets.
  • Harken : a bald headed male scientist who headed the Dominion research in attempting to control Shaper technology and harness the Anthem of Creation.
  • Alesmir : a doctor in the Dominion forces who wrote a letter to the Monitor detailing how the Brutes in the Fort Tarsis tended to attack their own specialised Brutes.
  • Kelrick :
  • Gehert : a Dominion soldier who was part of the Monitor's expedition to the south.
  • Alesmir : a scientist who noted how wild Brutes tended to attack the ones within Dominion control.

Notes

  • The Dominion was created by BioWare where they featured in the setting of Anthem.
  • As noted on Gamesradar, head writer Cathleen Rootsaert said that, "The Dominion are also heirs to General Tarsis. It was after General Tarsis died that the Legion of Dawn split into its three sub-factions – the Freelancers, the Sentinels, and the Dominion."
