Biography

Doop

His origins were traced to near the end of the Cold War when he was built as part of the Doop Project. (X-Statix v1 #21) One account held that he was born to Mama Doop and Papa Doop. (All-New Doop v1 #4) He was deployed in that conflict where it was noted that he was instrumental in bringing about the fall of the Berlin Wall that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. (X-Statix v1 #21)

In one of the X-Statix's missions, Doop's brain exploded, letting 5 pieces of his brain drop all over the world to different locations. While X-Statix tried to re-assemble the brain, they got rivalry from the superhero team known as the Avengers whom also joined together in order to re-assemble the parts of Doop's brain for their own purposes. A hunt for the brain parts started, with in most cases, X-Statix being the ones whom got away with the price. At the end of the hunt, Doop's brain was brought back together save one piece. This however did wake Doop up, since he was able to live and function on his second brain. He fought against Thor for the last part of his brain, won the fight and successfully restored his whole brain. In that fight, he also demonstrated that he is considered worthy enough by Thor's mystic hammer Mjolnir to lift and wield it. It was later suggested by Captain America that Doop was a weapon made by the US during the Cold War that was essential in the defeat of Russia. Doop allegedly died by gunfire along with the other X-Statix in their last mission. Although Doop returned in his own mini-series, turning out to not be dead. His survival remains unexplained but likely due to him returning to Doopspace. (X-Statix v1 #25)

Decades later, Doop joined X-Force as their cameraman and was charged with capturing the events of the team’s missions as well as behind-the-scenes footage. As the team’s primary purpose was financial gain, rather than adventure or general heroics, the videos Doop recorded were the team’s major source of income next to merchandising. To that end, Doop was never active in field missions, always staying behind the camera. Nevertheless, Doop was still considered part of the team and gained a huge fan following. Along with U-Go Girl and the Anarchist, Doop was one of only three team members to survive when a mission to save the band Boys 'R' Us turned into a massacre. At a press conference to introduce the new team roster following this tragedy, the original X-Force team attacked the group that had publicly adopted their name. When Doop was held at gunpoint by Domino, Mister Sensitive, who had just been announced as the new team leader, subdued her and saved Doop, earning his respect. (X-Force v1 #117) During an interview with Wolverine for a segment titled "Doop's Eye View of the New X-Force Team’s First Year", Doop gave Wolverine a tape to look after and asked him to keep an eye on his new teammates. X-Force's manager, The Coach, wanted to get rid of both U-Go Girl and Mister Sensitive and attempted to have them killed. Luckily for them, Wolverine intervened and handed Mister Sensitive the tape, telling him that someone was looking out for him. The tape had footage showing that the massacre on the Boys R Us mission was planned by The Coach. (X-Force v1 #120)

Later on, Doop popped what was seemingly a pimple on his forehead which resulted in a vortex forming that sucked the entire X-Force team inside Doop’s head. Doop panicked and followed by reaching into the hole left by the pimple and turning himself inside out. Inside his own dark imagination, Doop rescued each team member from horrors based on their own fears before rushing back through the hole in his forehead. Doop squeezed the pimple once more and the team reappeared in their quarters, unaware that anything had actually taken place. (X-Force v1 #123)

Later, when a group of X-Men were on a mission in space, Polaris witnessed a strange thing in space. (X-Men v2 #170)

Doop then fell from space to Earth, crashing in Costa Rica in close proximity to Polaris and Havok, revealing himself as Doop, alive but deformed. (X-Men v2 #180) Doop had a strange behaviour, acting like a child, continuously attacking Havok who was uncomfortable with him, and apparently talking to only Polaris. (X-Men v2 #181)

Overview

Personality and attributes

It was later explained that Doop ignored the questions on whether he was male, female, straight, or gay. (All New-Doop v1 #4)

He has a mother named Mama Doop with whom he seems to have a difficult relationship. (All-New Doop v1 #1)

Another creature similar to Doop was a being known as Daap. (X-Men v2 #180)

Powers and abilities

He also seemed to know how to use a kind of Doop witchcraft like the one used to go with Mama Doop. (All-New Doop v1 #3)

Doopspace was a place beyond the margin and was a dimension that was known as Marginalia. It was held as the world between worlds which was where the story began and ended with it being a veritable Doop World. Time operated differently within this realm as it was in-between the various moments in history. (All-New Doop v1 #2) Inhabitants of this dimension were referred to as Marginals who considered suicide to be a grave sin. (All-New Doop v1 #4)

Notes

  • Doop was created by Peter Milligan and Mike Allred where he made his first appearance in X-Force v1 #116 (July, 2001).
  • Series editor Axel Alonso responded in an October 8, 2001 article by Eric J. Moreels on the X-Fan site (now Comixfan) which was previously part of Cinescape.com:
"It was brought to our attention only last week that some folks were popping over to Blambot.com to ostensibly decode the enigma of 'Doop Speak'. Do not be fooled. Says [series writer] Peter Milligan, and I quote: 'Any such alphabet that purports to exist is to 'Doop Speak' what a Greek Restaurant menu is to The Iliad. The complexities and nuances of Doop Speak — understood only by an initiated few — cannot be encompassed or delineated by any one image system.' Folks should 'translate' at their own risk."

  • In Infinity Wars v1 #3 (2018), an alternate version of Doop merged with Deadpool named Doopool appeared in the Warp World reality that existed within the Soul Stone.
