Biography

Dukat was a male member of the Cardassians who lived by the 24th century and was a citizen of the Cardassian Union. (DS9: Emissary) Enlisting in the military, one of his first assignments when he was a new Glinn who served aboard the Kornaire. Among his duties included cleaning out a compartment where three men had gone through explosive decompression where he said he could not sleep for weeks afterwards. (DS9: Waltz) At some point, he became a Legate but lost favour with the Cardassian Central Command who reduced his rank to Gul. (DS9: Indescretion) Afterwards, he claimed he refused to be promoted to Legate because he preferred the more 'hands on' approach that was available to him as a Gul. (DS9: Ties of Blood and Water)

By 2346, he had attained the rank of Gul with Dukat being appointed the Prefect of Bajor. (DS9: Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night) In 2360, he came to be assigned command of the mining station of Terok Nor that orbited planet. (DS9: The Maquis, Part I) In that time, he was responsible for many atrocities committed against the Bajoran people, and became one of the most hated individuals in Bajoran history. (DS9: Emissary)

While Prefect, Dukat reported to Legate Kell regularly; however, he did not have the respect from Kell that he was led to believe. Dukat created a counter-insurgency program to combat potential worker revolts on Terok Nor, but Kell secretly added a level to it in case Dukat tried to flee. The automated program was set to deal with various situations, the most severe of which was a complete takeover of the station. In the event that this happened, the program could initiate an auto-destruct sequence, and if Dukat tried to transport off the station while this sequence was in effect, his access codes would be nullified and he would be doomed to die with his station. (DS9: Civil Defense)

Dukat strongly opposed the Cardassian withdrawal from Bajor in 2369, a move which damaged his career due to the politicians, such as Kotan Pa'Dar blaming him, as it occurred during Dukat's administration. During the evacuation and after a bombing, he had one of his female officers take Pa'Dar's son, Rugal, to an orphanage to, at some point, be used to humiliate Pa'Dar. After the withdrawal, Dukat became the commander of the Second Order and given the command of the Galor-class Prakesh. He played a major role in many interactions between the Cardassian military and the Federation for the next three years, and made several visits to his former command post, Deep Space 9, under various circumstances. (DS9: Cardassians)

He commanded a warship back to the station that was renamed by the Federation as Deep Space 9. Once there, he met with its Starfleet commander who was Captain Benjamin Sisko where he expressed the view that the Cardassians would keep a watch over the station and the activities on Bajor. During this time, they discovered the Starfleet presence in the system had discovered the existence of the Bajoran Wormhole. Upon learning of the finding, Dukat attempted to lay a claim to the phenomena for the Cardassian Union where he took his warship through the wormhole. However, his vessel was disabled as it crossed over and became stranded in the Gamma Quadrant as the wormhole was closed by the entities within it. In response to Dukat's disappearance, 3 vessels from the Cardassian 4th Order were dispatched under the command of Gul Jasad to investigate the loss of their warship bringing them into a state of hostility with Deep Space 9 as they believed the crew had destroyed their ship. Captain Sisko managed to convince the Prophets to reopen the wormhole whereupon he recovered Dukat's warship thus ending the threat from the Cardassians. (DS9: Emissary)

Dukat was implicated in the supplying of illegal weapons to Cardassian citizens in the Demilitarized Zone in 2370 by his political enemies, including Legate Parn. Arriving aboard DS9 as an unregistered passenger aboard a Kotakian ship, Dukat assisted Commander Benjamin Sisko in his investigation of the Maquis, so as to prove his innocence. He was briefly abducted by the Maquis, but he was rescued by Sisko. It emerged that the Cardassian Central Command was actually responsible for violating the Federation-Cardassian Treaty. (DS9: The Maquis, Part I)

In 2372, a dissident faction was responsible for conducting a successful coup against the Central Command and replacing it with a civilian government known as the Detapa Council. Dukat was noted to had sided with the victorious civilians and was appointed a military adviser for them. Around this time, he was contacted secretly by Garak who revealed intelligence that showed the Klingon Empire had intended to invade the Cardassian empire. (DS9: The Way of the Warrior)

Notes

  • Dukat was portrayed by actor Marc Alaimo where he featured in the setting of Star Trek: Deep Space 9.
  • In an interview on AOL, co-executive producer Ronald D. Moore said, "I don't think of him as being completely evil through and through ... He can be charming. He can be generous. He can do the right thing. All of that somehow makes his 'evil' actions all the more despicable, because we know that there was the potential in there for him to be a better person." Despite that, he did note that, "Dukat is a bad guy. A very bad guy.
