History
For a time, the Elders came to believe themselves to be an exalted form of life as they were the oldest living beings in the universe. This viewpoint shattered when they discovered that Galactus the World Devourer was an inhabitant of the previous universe and thus even older. Thus, they decided to target Galactus and eliminate him knowing full well that this could lead to the collapse of reality. The Elders had hoped that by destroying reality that a new universe would be created and that they could transition into this new cosmos to become akin to Galactus in the new universe free to be oldest and most powerful beings. A wager was made between the Grandmaster and the Collector who decided to chose champions to settle their bet. This saw the Grandmaster select the Hulk who chose his fellow Defenders to aid him whilst the Collector decided to choose he mysterious Red Hulk who gathered a group of supervillains to form the Offenders for the fight. (Hulk v2 #10)
Following the Secret Wars, the Elders sought to confirm their suspicion that the Multiverse had been reborn and arrived at the ruined remains of Battleworld. They sought to determine how to divide the energy from the ruined chrysalis dimension with the Grandmaster suggesting a Contest of Champions with combatants selected from the Multiverse. Each Elder selected a champion to fight but each were eliminated leaving the warriors of the Grandmaster and the Collector as the only remaining fighters. The Maestro, however, refused the final fight but proposed a new Contest instead whereby himself and Punisher 2099 served as coaching Summoners to teams of champions that would fight one another. The machinations of the Maestro allowed him to stage an attack on the Grandmaster to claim his piece of the Iso-Sphere. Through that, he took the remaining power of the Iso-Sphere from the Collector whereupon he used the Power Primordial to banish the Elders from the Battlerealm. (Contest of Champions v2 #6) With the reordering of the universe, the events had led to an impact on several Elders that began to act differently. (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #10)
Overview
Elders were beings as old as the most ancient of gods. (Unworthy Thor v1 #2) Their family bond was not based on lineage but rather on shared Power Primordial. (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #10)
They were regarded as shepherds of existence. (Avengers v1 #339) Resisting an Elder was considered futile and came at a greater price. It was said that none of their number had ever broken a true promise. (Hulk v2 #10) All knowledge that existed or had ever existed was said to be accessible to an Elder. (Shatterstar v1 #3) Death was held as a subjective term for an Elder allowing them to restore others to life. However, resurrection for their own number was nearly impossible. (Hulk v2 #12)
A saying among their number was that, "moments of cosmic consequence are always followed by moments of profound silence." (Avengers v1 #339)

Notes
- The Elders of the Universe were created by Stan Lee and Don Heck where they first appeared in Avengers v1 #28 (May, 1966) with the Collector first appearing but the Elders as a group first appeared in Avengers v1 #174 (August, 1978).
In other media
Television
- In Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes, the Grandmaster made an appearance in the episode "Contest of Champion" where he was referred to as an Elder of he Universe. Both the Kree and the Skrulls were shown to respect as well as fear his power.
- In Ultimate Spider-Man, both the Collector and the Grandmaster appeared in the episode "Contest of Champions" where they were referred to as Elders of the Universe. The two waged the Contest of Champions whereby the Grandmasters villains battled the Collectors heroes with Earth being the prize.
