History

The EMH Program AK-1 Diagnostic and Surgical Subroutine Omega-323 (EMH) was a development in holographic technology made for Starfleet by Dr. Lewis Zimmerman with it being used in the 24th century. Initially, Dr. Zimmerman intended to call it the 'Holo-Doc' but Starfleet Command came to request it being re-named as the Emergency Medical Program. (VOY: Projections)

In time, the original Mark I EMH programs were re-purposed to serve in labour roles where they scrubbed plasma conduits on waste transfer barges. (VOY: Life Line)

Overview

It possesses one of the Federation's most extensive medical databases, containing information from over 3,000 cultures and the personal experiences of 47 specific surgeons. The program itself is built on an adaptive heuristic matrix, pioneered by Dr. Zimmerman, which allows the EMH programs to learn and adapt quickly to new situations.

The program was designed to provide short-term advanced assistance in the sickbay during times of emergency and could potentially replace a ship's medical officer. (DS9: Doctor Bashir, I Presume)

It was said that the hologram was not programmed to care but simply to perform procedures. (DS9: Life Line)
