Origin

Villainy

After Brainiac 13's defeat, the prosthetic in Hamilton's arm made of the villains technology triggered a sleeper program. It sought to restart the Brainiac dynasty and began to influence the mind of Emil forcing him to adopt the persona of a masked supervillain called the Overmind. (Superman: Man of Steel v1 #125)

At one point, he assumed a supervillain identity named Overmind which he claimed was due to his mind being subverted by his cybernetic arm. (Superman: Man of Steel v1 #125)

  • Emil Hamilton was created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway where he first appeared as Professor Hamilton in Adventures of Superman #424 v1 (January 1987).

Television

  • In the DC Animated Universe, the character made a number of appearances.
    • In Superman: The Animated Series, Professor Hamilton made his first animated appearance where he was voiced by actor Victor Brandt. He first appeared in the episode "Feeding Time" where he was shown to work at. S.T.A.R. Labs and working to help Superman.
    • In Justice League Unlimited, Professor Hamilton returned in the shared animated continuity where he was voiced by actor Robert Foxworth. In "Fearful Symmetry", it was revealed that he had secretly used Supergirls DNA to create an adult clone named Galatea.
  • In Smallville, there were two versions of Professor Hamilton that appeared in the live-action series.
    • In the shows first season, a character by the name of Steve Hamilton appeared where he was portrayed by actor Joe Morton.
    • In season 8, Emil Hamilton's name was shown in a Daily Planet article regarding the mysterious 'Red-Blue Blur' in the episode "Identity". He made his actual appearance in the episode "Bulletproof" where he was portrayed by actor Alessandro Juliani.
  • In Supergirl, a female version of the character was shown named Doctor Amelia Hamilton who worked at the D.E.O. and was portrayed by actor Sarah Robson.

Films

  • In Man of Steel, Dr. Emil Hamilton appeared in the live-action film where he was portrayed by actor Richard Schiff.
  • In Justice League: Gods and Monsters, the character made a minor appearance where he was voiced by actor Trevor Devall. Hamilton was shown as among the various leading minds of an alternate world that were taught by Lex Luthor. He was later recruited into the American government project code named Project: Fair Play that sought to find countermeasures against the superpowered Justice League. After the death of a number of scientists on the project, Emil Hamilton attended a meeting with the project's surviving members where they were massacred by three Metal Men designed with the abilities of one member of the Justice League.
