Biography

The Fallen One was a humanoid cosmic being who was the first of the Heralds of Galactus. He once had a name but this had long since been forgotten when the being was empowered with black matter by Galactus. As part of his purpose, he sought out worlds for his master to sustain him. In time, the being that became the Fallen one began to enjoy killing others where his actions were eventually discovered by his master. This resulted in Galactus deciding to casting his servant to the side and banished him from his service. (Thanos v1 #11) The Fallen One was imprisoned many times over many centuries, and each time it escaped it immediately went after its former master, Galactus, who always defeated it. (Thanos v1 #12) During one of his escape attempts, the Fallen One went on a rampage to destroy worlds that could be potential nourishment for the World Devourer in an effort to starve him. This saw him being confronted by Star-Lord where the Fallen One nearly killed his foe who was saved by his sentient Ship. The Fallen One next targeted the Kree fringe world of Avaleen-4 where he was once again confronted by Star-Lord and his partner Ship. Unfortunately, they discovered that the only way they could prevent the insane ex-Herald from destroying the planet was by channeling a vast amount of life energy against him and the only way that they could generate that much energy was by sacrificing thousands of lives. So, in order to save the lives of millions, Ship decimated the mining colony and channeled the resulting surge of life energy through her ordnance matrix at the Fallen One, rendering him unconscious. The act of channeling that much energy also killed Ship, and Star-Lord, now a mass murderer, turned himself and the Fallen One over to the Nova Corps for punishment. (Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord v1 #1) The energies required to do so caused massive collateral damage, leaving 350,000 dead led to Star-Lord's imprisonment at the Kyln. Meanwhile, the Fallen One was returned to his cocoon-like prison the same intergalactic maximum security prison. (Thanos v1 #12)

During Thanos' battle with the Maker, the power was shut down to large portions of the Kyln. Without power flowing into its prison, the Fallen One escaped the Kyln and flew off to once again seek vengeance on Galactus. The Fallen One rocketed through space at near light speed. He soared across the universe until he got to near its edge which was the location of Galactus's ship. (Thanos v1 #11) The Fallen One confronted Galactus in his ship. Thanos sent a mental image of himself to the ship and tried to reason with the Fallen One, reminding him of Galactus' special purpose in the universe. The Fallen One justified itself, saying that Galactus knew its true nature when he made the Fallen One what it is, and still cast it out. Fallen One would hear none of Thanos' pleas, and blasted the mental image. Galactus decided to alleviate his own problems and spite Thanos in one action, and teleported the Fallen One to Thanos' ship, saying that if Thanos wanted so badly to partake in this matter, than he could have it. The Fallen One warned Thanos to stay out of his business with Galactus or die, and that he would find Galactus no matter what. Thanos refused to back down, so the Fallen One unleashed a powerful energy attack that devastated Thanos' giant ship, and sent it plummeting to the surface of the planet below them. The Fallen One was shocked to see that Thanos was still alive and relatively unharmed. Fallen One attacked Thanos, but was humbled by Thanos and Skreet and sent into the core of the gas giant they were battling above and ignited it. Thanos found the Fallen One's unconscious form and mentally enslaved it, so that when it awoke it would serve as Thanos' own herald as well as provide him with information as to its source of unlimited energy. (Thanos v1 #12)

The Fallen One was by Thanos's side as Mistress Death told them of the events of the coming Annihilation Day. (Annihilation: Prologue v1 #1) During the Annihilation War, the forces of the Annihilation Wave emerged from the Negative Zone to invade the positive-matter universe. In this time, Thanos sought to achieve his own goals and dispatched the Fallen One to find the remnant of the Beyonder who had been imprisoned in the Kyln. The Fallen One was to recover the remnant if she was still alive but upon arriving the former Herald simply found destruction in his wake. In this time, the Fallen One came to investigate the Seekers who the Silver Surfer had just fought them off. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #1) Afterwards, he was then beset upon by the newly freed Proemial Gods Tenebrous and Aegis. They came to sense the energies within the Fallen One were those of their ancient enemy Galactus and thus decided to interrogate the former Herald to learn of what happened to the universe since their imprisonment. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #3) Their interrogation seemingly drained the Fallen One of his powers and he was apparently killed in the process as the two Proemial Gods went to meet the Mad Titan Thanos. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #4)

The remains of the Fallen One were recovered where Thanos knew that the Power Cosmic within him could not be destroyed. Thus, he sought to make use of this power and travelled to the realm of Nidaveller in order to forge the remains into a weapon he could harness for his purposes. Once there, the Mad Titan forced the native Dwarves to cremate the Fallen One's remains which they forged into the Herald's Urn. The relic allowed the user to control the mighty of the Fallen One's Power Cosmic. Upon seeing the dangers of the weapon, the Dwarven seers believed that they could not allow Thanos to wield such a weapon as it would change the balance of power in the universe. Thus, they feared his return but he never returned as the Mad Titan was killed during the Annihilation War. The Dwarves then looked to hide the Herald's Urn where it came to be a legend with it being a weapon that many sought to claim. (Yondu v1 #2)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, the Fallen One resembled a dark-skinned humanoid whose body was made of blackness with long ethereal-looking hair. It was said that he once had a name but that this had long since been forgotten. (Thanos v1 #11)

He was created to be a hunter seeker and thus operated as a Herald. Galactus was said to act only out of necessity whereas the Fallen One killed out of pleasure. (Thanos v1 #11)

The Fallen One was noted for his hatred of his creator Galactus and had a desire to seek revenge against the World Devourer. This saw him attacking his maker each time he was released in an attempt to destroy him. (Thanos v1 #11) Such was his hatred that the Fallen One cared of the aftermath of his actions if he succeed in killing his quarry. The Fallen One had said that Galactus had taken from him all that he was and was responsible for his current nature. (Thanos v1 #12) It was only a sense of guilt that stopped Galactus from destroying his creation. (Thanos v1 #11) The Fallen One vowed that the Devourer would die by his hand and that he would not be denied as he was inevitable with there being no place Galactus could hide from him. (Thanos v1 #12) The spite he felt for Galactus was to the point that he destroyed worlds that were potential nourishment for the World Devourer. (Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord v1 #1)

A weakness of the Fallen One was his rage that blinded him to his actions. This led to more clever opponents capable of outwitting the Herald. (Thanos v1 #12)

After being defeated by Thanos, the Mad Titan used his powers to enslave the Fallen One and turn him into his own herald. (Thanos v1 #12)

Powers and abilities

Unlike the other Heralds, the Fallen One was sustained by black matter namely the essence of the void. It was the binding halo by which galaxies were made solvent. (Thanos v1 #11) This led to him being an incredible power cosmic figure whose power source was infinite. (Thanos v1 #12) According to the files of the Nova Corps, the Fallen One was considered a 'Galactic'-level threat. (Annihilation: The Nova Corps Files v1 #1)

It was shown that he was capable of travelling faster than the speed of light and was immune to the rigors of space. (Thanos v1 #11) The power wielded by him was enough that he could ignite a gas giant's core. He was incredible resilient able to survive the creation of a newborn store though the act had left him weakened and unconscious. (Thanos v1 #12) With a gesture, he was shown to be capable of teleporting people and sending them away. (Thanos v1 #11) It was noted that the energies released from the destruction of a world by his hands could cause the Fallen One to feel pain. Thus, it was possible to channel this energy an effort to stun the Fallen One to leave him unconscious though such an act cost an incredible amount of life. (Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord v1 #1)

The Fallen One was created as the first Herald of Galactus and had once served the Devourer until he rebelled against his master. (Thanos v1 #11)
