Biography

Origin

The Black Cat in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #194.

Felicia Sara Hardy was the daughter of world renowned cat burglar Walter Hardy who got married and retired from the life of stealing. From the marriage, he had a daughter named Felicia Hardy who came to idolise her father and though he was largely retired he still on occasion committed the odd burglary. He explained his frequent absences to his daughter as due to his work as a travelling salesman. The family did not live well off despite the thefts he made and though he could have earned in other ways Walter Hardy had become addicted to the thrill from crime. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #195) As a child, her father often took her out to games and played basketball with her. (Spider-Man and the Black Cat v1 #6) One day, she witnessed him paying his due to the New York City chapter of the Thieves Guild. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #9) When Felicia was 13 years old, her father was arrested for a crime he did not commit and was sent to prison. Her mother hid the truth about her father and instead told Felicia that Walter had died in a plane crash. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #195) At Empire State University, she was a freshman when she met Ryan who seemingly protected her when she started from a boy that was drunk. She became smitten with him as he appeared as a charming decent person and Felicia believed him to be the love of her life as she began to spend more time with him. On one such night, he forced himself on her and raped Felicia with her being in a daze afterwards with her not reporting the crime nor going to therapy as she felt ashamed of herself. She then decided to devote herself to not being a victim and began to train for months in martial arts along with other skills whilst refusing all contact with Ryan. Felicia intended to strike back at Ryan but when she was ready he was arrested for a crime and thus she was denied her vengeance. In her dissatisfaction, she sought to steal something and on that night she stole her first diamond leading to her life as a burglar. (Spider-Man and the Black Cat v1 #6) Furious that she was denied the chance to steal the life of the man who had stolen hers, and feeling reckless, Hardy decided to utilize her new skills to follow in the footsteps of her father. After having been arrested, Felicia was freed from prison by the Black Fox Raul Chaulmers, her father's mentor, who took Felicia as his new pupil. (Black Cat v1 #2) She was trained by Black Fox alongside fellow thief Tamara Blake and although the latter was better than Felicia, Black Fox favoured Hardy due to her having genuine joy in theft and not being in it for just the money. (Iron Cat v1 #2) During these early years, she learnt to be a cat burglar alongside Tamara Blake who became Felicia's oldest friend. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man Annual v1 #4)

Whilst she had believed her father had died, in time came to learn the truth that he was in prison with her attempting to set him free but the State refused to grant her appeals as the claimed he was still dangerous to society. This led to her honing her skills to become a skilled burglar as she sought to eventually free Walter Hardy from prison as she believed he had suffered greatly for a crime he did not commit. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #195) At some point, she became a member of the Thieves Guild and developed a good reputation with them. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #9) She then looked to assemble a crew where they were to help her free her father from prison. Felicia then met with her mentor Black Fox and revealed that she had decided to take the name Black Cat as she set about becoming a master thief. (Black Cat v2 #5) After 2 years of training, she felt she was ready and started her criminal career by breaking into police headquarter where she found some key files. It was then that she began forcibly recruiting two criminals to help support her operations. This included a muscleman named Bruno when he was working for his boss and another was Dr. Boris Korpse. The next day, she proceeded for a meet-up with Emil Greco where she intended to purchase guns only for the meeting to be interrupted by Spider-Man. She fought the hero long enough for Greco to escape and ended up kissing Spider-Man to distract him long enough for her to depart the scene. With everything in place, she arranged with her crew the planned escape of Walter Hardy from prison. This saw Bruno and Korpse plant explosives that would allow their target to escape the walls of the prison. However, a complication emerged when Spider-Man arrived at the scene but the Black Cat ensured that the hero became trapped by falling debris. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #194)

Spider-Man

Felicia stayed a criminal in a misguided attempt to attract the attentions of Spider-Man. She stole many works of art to prove her love for him, such as "The Two Lovers" statue and the "Eyes of Eros" diamond. Spider-Man only saw Felicia as a disturbed young woman, who was more a child than a grown woman. In fact, he believed that Black Cat's fathers death must had shattered her emotional balance and thought she latched on to him as a substitute father. In her own, childlike way, she really does love me. At first, he decided to take her to a psychiatric hospital, hoping she would get the help that she needed. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #195) Felicia looked for a way to earn his trust and continued with the Black Cat persona as a misguided attempt to attract his affection. However, she was still cunning enough to fake mental instability when captured, ensuring she was housed in a less secure facility. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #205) When she was released, Felicia initially agreed to go straight for Spider-Man, and the web-slinger even had his friend on the force Captain DeWolff begin drawing up amnesty papers. The Black Cat decided to pull one last big score, however, and attempted to manipulate Spider-Man into joining her life of crime. He tried to capture her again, but Felicia seemingly flung herself to her death rather than go back to jail. Captain DeWolff ironically arrived with the now useless amnesty papers shortly after. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #227)

Months later, the Black Cat returned to America to seek out Peter Parker and was devastated when informed by Venom that Peter had married Mary Jane Watson. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #316)

Initially, the 'accidents' which seem to befall those who crossed the Black Cat's path are merely well-planned stunts and traps. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #75)

Afraid of how Spider-Man would react, she kept her new abilities secret from Peter. Her newly gained 'bad luck' power was infectious and began to permanently jinx Spider-Man, which was exactly the Kingpin's intent. Feeling a wall of secrets growing between them, Spider-Man broke up with Felicia, which infuriated her since she was just about to break up with him to protect him from the effects of her 'jinx'. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #100) Felicia then begins a "Robin Hood crusade", stealing from the rich to give to the poor. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #112) Peter soon realizes something is amiss with his own luck and enlists the aid of Doctor Strange to remove the 'hex' on him. By doing so, he alters the hex's source and changes the Black Cat's powers in the process. She finds she has heightened strength, agility, balance, vision, and retractable claws. While burglarizing the mercenary known as the Foreigner, Black Cat is attacked by Sabretooth, the Foreigner's hitman; Spider-Man saves her life. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #115)

Months later, the Black Cat returned to America to seek out Peter Parker and was devastated when informed by Venom that Peter had married Mary Jane Watson.(Amazing Spider-Man v1 #316)

Afterwards, she would purchase new equipment from the Tinkerer to compensate for her lost powers where she would occasionally team up with Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #369)

At one point, she and Wolverine were kidnapped and forced to survive against multiple assailants on an uninhabited island. They managed to survive many traps, including the volcano in the middle of the island erupting, and tracked down the one who kidnapped them, Arcade. They easily tracked him down and left him tied up on in the Savage Land. (Claws v1 #1)

After Spider-Man unmasked himself, the Black Cat was angry over the matter because she felt that she and Peter shared a bond over knowing his identity. (Sensational Spider-Man v2 #29)

Black Cat came to be recruited into the new Heroes for Hire though Misty Knight believed Felicia to be only motivated by the money. (Heroes for Hire v2 #2)

She was later noted to had broken up with Puma and returned to a life of crime. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #606) This saw her regaining her bad luck powers after meeting the supervillain scientist Doctor Tramma who also enhanced her by giving her retractable cybernetic claws. (Web of Spider-Man v2 #11) Black Cat returned to Spider-Man's life when he stumbled upon her before a break-in. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #606) She and Spider-Man took the chance to rekindle their old relationship, with no strings attached and masks kept on at all times. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #607)

Later on, a Wi-Fi hologram projector created by a scientist named Wasserschmidt at Horizon Labs was stolen with Felicia being framed and imprisoned for the theft. Escaping from custody, Black Cat tried to find who framed her, encountering both Daredevil and Spider-Man. The trio went to Wasserschmidt's apartment to find any clue, when they find Wasserschmidt himself in a secret room. According to Wasserschmidt himself, Terra-One Corporate forced him to commit the theft. While Spidey took Wasserschmidt to a hospital, Felicia and Daredevil went to Terra-One, there, they found the Black Spectre trying to get the projector. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #677) Daredevil stopped them while Black Cat found herself with the mastermind of this plan, who wanted Felicia to get him a Omegadrive, a piece of technology with data about every criminal organization, which was presently in the hands of Matt Murdock, Daredevil's alter-ego. Felicia attempted to start an affair with Murdock in order to get into his apartment, but they didn't consolidate a romance due to Matt being was called to action. Felicia was tempted to steal the Omegadrive from Murdock, but opted not to, and departed, leaving behind a note warning Matt that Black Spectre was after him. In the end, she fell in love with Matt. Due to having betrayed Black Spectre, Felicia went into hiding until the matter was resolved. (Daredevil v3 #8)

Queenpin of Crime

Queenpin of Crime in Amazing Spider-Man v3 #2.

Having grown tired of her superhero and criminal activities, Felicia started to save money to retire. (Silk v2 #9) During this time, Doctor Octopus had switched bodies with Spider-Man and taken over his life. When he bumped into Felicia in the act of a robbery, he attacked her abruptly and left her to the police. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #20) Felicia's stolen treasures were repossessed, and her criminal contacts broke all ties with her. After escaping when Electro destroyed the penitentiary, Felicia got a new costume and vowed to make Spider-Man pay for what happened to her, without knowing at this time the real Peter Parker was behind the mask once again. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #1)

Black Cat was in the process of revealing Spider-Man's identity on the camera but his face was masked by webbing created by Silk. Silk then took Spider-Man away from the scene thus thwarting Felicia's attempts at exposing the Wall-Crawler. She later went with Electro to the Bar With No Name though its patrons refused to let the pair enter as they were mourning the death of Francine Frye and refused to associate with Max Dillon. Black Cat then decided her new plan at revenge against the Spider which was targeting a Parker Industries demonstration at the waterfront where they were showcasing a new electro-trap. Disguising themselves as employees, they infiltrated the site where Black Cat took control the device which threatened to kill the people at the scene. She then caused the electro-trap to cause Max Dillon to go on overload and threaten to kill everyone. Spider-Man came to save Electro with Silk's help though Felicia managed to escape the scene. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #6)

This led to a formal partnership between her and Hammerhead with them working to remove the new Spider-Man. (Spider-Man v2 #16)

Her position came to be contested by up-and-coming and recently returned Diamondback Willis Stryker who had his own aim to be the reigning crime lord in the city. (Defenders v5 #1) She later assisted the Defenders when they fought Diamondback outside Club Ultimate. She shot him multiple times with a high-tech rifle, knocking him out. (Defenders v5 #9) Felicia had been detained by the time The Hood filled the void left by Diamondback. She cajoled for her release in exchange of The Hood's whereabouts and plans, that being to create a network of crime territories across the East Coast, with Hood himself as the "Kingpin of all Kingpins." (Defenders v5 #10)

Hardy was later one of many crime bosses that were gathered for a meeting by Mayor Fisk though they were ambushed by Daredevil along with the other street level vigilantes to arrest them. (Daredevil v1 #600) She came to be sent to Ryker's Island with the others where during this time the city came under attack from the Hand. Seeking aid to fight them off, acting mayor Matt Murdock made a deal with the crime bosses where he would release them in exchange for their help in fighting the army of ninja besieging the city. Hardy agreed and she along with the others lent their aid in fighting off the attackers. (Daredevil v1 #603)

She began to work hard in impressing the Five Families that represented the great crime families in the world with her being offered a place at the table. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #793) After obtaining a measurable amount of manpower, Lee attacked Black Cat's operations and used the Mania symbiote to take control of her subordinates and Felicia herself. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #792) Since Black Cat's gang had been invited for the very first time to the gathering of the five largest crime families in the world, Lee seized Black Cat's operations so to make his way into the gathering and take control of the other families. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #793) When Spider-Man and Anti-Venom stumbled upon Lee's operations, Black Cat used what little free will she had to force herself to enter in contact with Anti-Venom, destroying the piece of symbiote controlling her. (Venom v1 #159) Felicia then joined forces with Venom to procure samples of the Anti-Venom serum developed by Alchemax, and used it to free Spider-Man, who had fallen under Maniac's control. The alliance learned of Maniac's endgame from Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #793) They made their way to the gathering to confront Maniac and the Inklings. After using weaponry coated with Anti-Venom to free those under Maniac's control, Price had the remains of the pieces of symbiotes used to control people merge with him to make him stronger. (Venom v1 #160)

Following Price's defeat, the alliance disbanded. Since they had worked together, Black Cat considered her feud with Spider-Man was over. When Felicia returned to her base of operations seeing that she lost her clout, Venom suggested her to see it as a fresh start, and to give up on trying to become a crime boss, arguing she could return to vigilantism. (Amazing Spider-Man: Venom Inc. Omega v1 #1) Despite Eddie's hopes that Felicia had forgiven him for their initial encounter, she proved to still hold a grudge against him - dismissing him as a vicious monster to a bar full of supervillains. (Venom Annual v1 #1)

Fresh Start

The Black Cat in Amazing Spider-Man v5 #1.

When Spider-Man was split into two, one half that adopted the superhero identity completely met with Felicia intending to get back together with her but nothing came of this matter. The Black Cat later returned to New York when the Thieves Guild under the leadership of Odessa Drake embarked on a world wide heist as part of a power move to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with once again. This saw her teaming up with Spider-Man in recovering the stolen goods though Felicia wanted to take half the items to sell on the black market. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #9)

She confessed to Spider-Man that the reason why she had acted differently to him was because she could not remember his secret identity. He then revealed that he had used means to make people forget his true identity. Felicia stated that this hurt her as once they were together and that she deserved to know as she felt close to him. Spider-Man then revealed his true identity as Peter Parker with a happy Felicia hugging him as all her memories were not restored to her. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #10)

Though happy, she tried to come to terms with the memories and her relationship with Spider-Man. It was then that she had a call from her former subordinate Hammerhead. Since she left the criminal underworld, he had formed an alliance with the Owl but Owsley had recently gone missing. Thus, he asked her to raid some of his hide outs for valuable items and to find him which she agreed despite her not wanting to go back into a life of crime. This saw her track Owl to a ship operated by Taskmaster and Black Ant who had recently been kidnapping people who were thematically based on animals. Whilst sneaking on the ship, she found a captive Billy Connors where she intended to abandon the boy to complete her mission. However, her conscience led to her abandoning the mission to save Billy when she was ambushed by Black Ant and Taskmaster who revealed that they had orchestrated for her to come on the ship to capture her as she was one of their targets. They had managed to convince Hammerhead to aid them as he gladly wanted to get revenge on his former boss. Before being knocked out, she used a Spider-Tracer to send a message to Spider-Man asking for his help whereupon she was captured. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #16.HU) She was kept with Billy at the Plaza Hotel where she found her kidnapper being Kraven the Hunter who revealed that he was using them as bait to hunt Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #17)

When the daughter of a Maggia leader asked Black Cat to help her and her fiancé escape the Maggia martyr wedding, Felicia recruited the help of Spider-Man, Boris Korpse, and Bruno Grainger. They formulated a plan to steal the money from the Maggia's catacombs which involved her and Spider-Man replacing the couple on their wedding. While the other members of her crew did their part, she and Spider-Man were able to get the money and escape. In the aftermath, Black Cat and Spider-Man parted ways, and she, Bruno and Boris went on another heist. (Black Cat Annual v1 #1)

Fox then revealed the true intention of his goal to enter into the vaults of the New York City. It was because he was dying and wanted to meet the guild's new patron the Gilded Saint and bargain for immorality for himself as well as Felicia where in exchange he offered all of Manhattan. (Black Cat v2 #5)

Fearing for her mother's safety due to Odessa's declaration of war, Felicia set her mother up on a cruise to Berlin. Talking with her mother left her feeling off, so she hired Beetle to accompany her when she went to Rand Tower to scan the Randall Gate which was inside it. While Black Cat was scanning it, Gork appeared and began to lick her face. Pei arrived soon afterwards and immediately attacked the two trespassers. Iron Fist then appeared and engaged them. Black Cat noted that he wasn't fighting seriously, and he answered that it's nice to fight a villain that isn't trying to kill him. He eventually grabbed the scanner out of her hand. She stated that the device was not recording data but was instead transmitting it to an associate and since it had finished, she had it explode in a flash of light which momentarily blinded everyone except Beetle and Black Cat who used the distraction to escape. Shortly afterwards, Odessa had the Black Cat's base blown up. (Black Cat v1 #8) The next item on the list was a painting which was a companion piece to the painting that they stole from the Frick Collection. It was last known to be in the custody of a "Mr. Patch" in Madripoor. Black Cat and the crew went there and after asking around were able to locate Mr. Patch's place only to find that it had already been cleaned out and Mr. Patch, who was revealed to be Wolverine, arrived soon afterwards. A business card had been left behind revealing that it was Kade Kilgore who took everything. Black Cat offered to help get all of Wolverine's stuff back if he agreed to give her the painting and he accepted. (Black Cat v1 #9) They were successful and as promised, he gave her the painting while taking everything else which were revealed to be papers and various things which had a sentimental value to Wolverine and no monetary value to the Black Cat. (Black Cat v1 #10) After Ceres Goldstein finished building a Randall Gate based on the specs that Black Cat had given her, she had it delivered to the Black Cat in New Jersey. In order to properly use the Randall Gate, a dimensional resonator would be needed to function as a key. The next target was to go to Stark Unlimited and use the Nanoforge within it to construct that key. Black Cat entered the building posing as a reporter to interview Tony Stark and much to her chagrin, Stark had been romantically linked with at least two red haired women, so she had to wear a red wig in order to get close enough to Stark to in order to touch him and clone his security credentials from the nanites in his body with her phone. After that, Firepower, who had been hired by the Black Cat, attacked to create a distraction. She took advantage of the chaos and headed for the Nanoforge but was intercepted by Bethany Cabe. Black Cat quickly subdued Bethany with a Narcpatch and used the Nanoforge to construct the key. Unfortunately, Iron Man had defeated Firepower and when he found out that his Nanoforge was active he immediately went there to investigate. Black Cat had the Nanoforge construct a cat-themed suit. (Black Cat v1 #11) She used it to engage Iron Man and after evading him, used it to attack Odessa Drake in her home as revenge for blowing up her base. After Iron Man arrived, her suit broke down, only to reveal that she wasn't in the suit and was remote piloting it from back in the Nanoforge. Black Cat then freed Firepower and left Stark Unlimited with the key before Iron Man could return. (Black Cat v1 #12)

I then decided to leave Spider-Woman and moved her over. So, I never even thought of Catwoman when I did her. I got the idea for her from a Tex Avery cartoon, Bad Luck Blackie."
