History

Pre-Crisis

The Freedom Fighters were a team of superheroes that existed on Earth-X. On their Earth, World War II affected the world where during the global conflict the U.S. President had a fatal heart attack in 1944. This resulted in the governmental balance of power going wrong thus affecting the two nations. It resulted in delays that allowed Germany to develop the atom bomb at the same time as the U.S.A. at the time. Neither side was then willing to deploy the weapons leading to conventional warfare being waged leading to many more lives being spent in the war. Five years ago, the Fuhrer's scientists came to develop a mind-control ray that allowed them to take control the populace of the world. Only a small band of superheroes proved to be immune to the rays effects where they banded together into an underground strike force led by Uncle Sam that opposed the Nazi's with them being known as the Freedom Fighters. (Justice League of America v1 #107)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The Freedom Fighters

A Time traveling Black Barax attacked Washington to draw out the Freedom Fighters in 1944 where he tried to abduct the Human Bomb to use his explosive power to fuel his damaged time-cube. The Freedom Fighters drove Barax back to his own time with the help of Mr. Terrific and time traveling heroes Hawkgirl II and Mr. Terrific II. The grateful Freedom Fighters had Human Bomb power Barax abandoned time-cube so the future heroes could return to their own time. (JSA v1 #42)

The Freedom Fighters fought in the battle against Gonzo's metahuman taskforce at the Washington Monument and quickly gained support from the civilians. The public eye were now seeing them as real heroes, which was later revealed to be part of Father Time's plan all along. He tricked Gonzo into believing that S.H.A.D.E was against Uncle Sam, whilst in truth he was preparing the Freedom Fighters to help combat a major threat in the future. Father Time captured Gonzo and turned him into an Orphan Box in the shape of a pair of spectacles. This was part of his plan to use it against Gonzo's creator, the Shadow Demons. All of the metahuman taskforce members disappeared into the timestream, along with Father Time, shortly thereafter. A week later, the new President appointed the Freedom Fighters as the new directors of S.H.A.D.E. (Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters v1 #8)

An army of Earth's heroes, including the Freedom Fighters, appeared to take Superboy-Prime down during the Sinestro Corps invasion of Earth. The heroes focused on wrecking his armor, because after a year on Oa, and away from a yellow sun his Kryptonian body still wasn't at full strength, and his armor collected sunlight. Superboy bragged that once the sun rose on Earth he'd be at full power. Superboy was battered by Wonder Girl and Wonder Woman, who blamed him for Superboy's death, as well as Supergirl and Power Girl, who blamed him for the death of the Superman of Earth-2. As the fight went against him, Superboy broke down in tears. He tried to wipe them away, saying that it was impossible for boys to cry, and then whining that no one ever thanked him for sacrificing his Earth to save the multiverse. The battle lasted until dawn, and he flew into the sunrise. As he achieved full power he declared himself the one, true Superman. The Guardians arrived with Sodam Yat, the new Ion, and pitted him against Superboy-Prime. (Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman-Prime v1 #1)
