History

The Freelancers were an army composed of humans that formed on the harsh world of Coda. Their origins were traced to long ago when mankind was enslaved under the Urgoth. During that time, the Javelin was created with the first being used by Helena Tarsis who rallied humanity under her into an army called the Legion of Dawn. United, they came to overthrow the Urgoth and established their own civilisation though this came at the death of General Tarsis. Her demise caused a splinter within the Legion of Dawn that splintered into three factions that included the Freelancers, the Sentinels and the Dominion. Those that became the Freelancers were an independent group said to follow the principles of General Tarsis and the Path of Valor.

Among the biggest enclaves of Freelancers was the city of Freemark with this being the case until it was attacked by the Dominion. Unknown to many, the invasion was triggered because the city secretly had a Shaper relic known as the Cenotaph with the Dominion looking to claim it for themselves. Despite putting up a strong defense, the Freelancers were unable to stop the city from falling with the Dominion activating the relic. However, this triggered an incident that caused a powerful cataclysm called the Heart of Rage which destroyed everything in the region. After the Freemark disaster, public confidence in the Freelancers was shaken due to their failure in silencing the Heart of Rage. This saw civilians turning to the Sentinels instead that grew in esteem as faith in the Lancers had fallen.

Two years later, one of the survivors of the Heart of Rage Cataclysm known as the Freelancer decided to reunite with their old colleagues in order to complete their failed mission namely to silence the cataclysm. Around this time, increased activity came from the Dominion who had dispatched one of their Monitors into Bastion in pursuit of the Cenotaph.

Overview

In appearance, the Freelancers were a loose organisation of trained Javelin pilots. They were referred to as "lancers" as a shorthand. They were responsible for silencing cataclysms in the world and to provide aid to those past the walls of the various cities.

Lancers acted without direct orders from a central organisation nor was there an official code that guided them. This led to one of the biggest criticisms of their order which was their disorganisation. The Freelancers were highly individualistic and tended to refuse to follow a leader.

Cyphers had a key role in supporting Lancers during their operations. They were shown to provide their Freelancer with intelligence with every team having at least one Cypher. Lancers were known to work alongside the Sentinels in the protection of cities. The Freelancers often interacted with bodies such as Corvus that was the diplomatic and intelligence arm of Bastion.

Contact was achieved through an all-purpose communication device known as a Link that allowed the user to use shortwave radio and mental contact to be maintained with the Cypher. The Cypher in turn used this as a conduit for speaking to additional parties that were connected to the Freelancer's activities.

The primary equipment of a Freelancer was their Javelin exo-suit.

A key element in group of Freelancers was the large Strider mech transports. The large four legged machines served as mobile outposts for Lancers through which they could launch deeper expeditions into the wild.
