Biography

Origin

Freiza (Japanese: フリーザ, Hepburn: Furīza) (? - August 764) was the son of King Cold and leader of a band of intergalactic pirates that became the Frieza Force in Universe 7 in the Multiverse. He was one of the most feared beings in the universe with the likes of the great King Kai feared him. At some point, his father was noted to had taken over the Planet Vegeta thus bringing the Saiyans under the control of their great empire. Over the years, the young Frieza was set to take over from his father where he passed control of the Saiyans over to him. In that time, Frieza employed powerful beings of many races, including Dodoria, Zarbon, the Ginyu Force, and the entire Saiyan race that were used to destroy worlds that were then sold off to the highest bidder. In these years, he came to learn of a prophecy regarding the Legendary Super Saiyan though Frieza came to dismiss this as a legend though did note that the Saiyan's ability to grow stronger through battle meant that they could become a threat to him. Thus, he ultimately decided to eliminate the species where this plot was uncovered by the warrior Bardock but the rest of his people failed to heed his warnings. As such, the majority of Saiyans were on their home planet Frieza came to destroy it though a small group of survivors who were off-world at the time managed to escape the destruction. Among them included Prince Vegeta and his fellow warrior Nappa who were away from Planet Vegeta at the time.

Sometime later, Vegeta and Nappa came to attack the Planet Earth after learning of objects called Dragon Balls that had the power of granting any wish. Such information came to be learnt by Frieza who intended to use their power to wish for immortality. This saw him taking the bulk of his forces to invade the Planet Namek after learning that the Namekians were the creators of the Dragon balls. In that time, Frieza and his forces went about gathering the Dragon Balls from that world that was the homeworld of Kami. They were successful in gathering several of the Dragon Balls there but soon afterwards his plans came to face obstacles in the form of Namekian warriors, the Z Warriors and Vegeta who looked to thwart Frieza's plans as well as avenge his people's destruction. When all his warriors were defeated, Frieza battled the interlopers himself, using his formidable fighting prowess along with three successively more empowering transformations. By this point, the guardian of the Namekian Dragon Balls had died thus making the wish granting orbs go inert and denying Frieza's ability to make his wish. Thus, he looked to take out his anger against those that stood in his way. In his final form, he was easily able to best them all including Vegeta but at this point was confronted by another Saiyan named Goku. Though more powerful, Goku was seemingly unable to match Frieza's sheer power leading to the intergalactic conqueror to toy with his opponent. Goku was able to survive many of Frieza's attacks but determined the only way to defeat his foe was with the Spirit Bomb. He then gathered all the life energy within the solar system which he collected into a powerful attack that he launched against an unaware Frieza. At first, it seemed that Frieza had been vanquished but he in fact survived the attack though had been hurt by the Spirit Bomb. He ended up grievously injuring Piccolo and killing Krillin with these losses causing Goku to achieve a transformation into the legendary Super Saiyan. Against this power, Frieza proved to be outclassed even when he tapped into any lingering strength in his body. In desperation, he looked to use a Death Ball to destroy Namek itself in the hope of killing Goku by exposing him to the vacuum of space as Frieza's own species was able to survive in such an environment. However, his weakened state meant that the Death Ball did not destroy the planet outright but meant that the world would explode in a short amount of time. Thus, Frieza was forced to continue to fight against the Super Saiyan where he came to have his body cut in half accidentally in his own attack after it missed Goku. Despite that, he was still alive but unable to continue the battle with Goku deciding to show mercy and even lending some energy to Frieza so that he could survive. However, Frieza was angered at a Saiyan showing him mercy and attempted to launch one final attack whilst Goku was departing in the hope of killing his opponent. This forced Goku to unleash a counterattack that seemingly ended up killing Frieza.

Despite the planet's destruction, Frieza had survived with a maimed shredded body drifted throughout space with the planet's debris, where half of his face blown off alongside even more grievous wounds. All the conqueror could manage in his suffering were thoughts of how he had been thoroughly decimated by a lowly Saiyan. His father King Cold had crews search the area, not believing his son to have been destroyed by something as insignificant as the explosion of a planet. What could be found of Frieza is salvaged and reconstructed with cybernetic enhancements, leaving him scarred and bitter. Knowing he is now stronger than ever before, Frieza's first thought upon rehabilitation is revenge on those who defeated him on Namek. Frieza managed to beats Goku back to Earth and orders his henchmen to find and slaughter its inhabitants, with Frieza keen on killing his enemy's friends himself. However, his army is torn apart by a mysterious youth named Trunks. Frieza dismisses his challenger as an insolent child, and pays him almost no heed until the boy reveals himself as another Super Saiyan. Even then, Frieza initially dismisses the boy's claim as a bluff and laughs it off, only to express shock when the boy proves his claim valid by transforming right in front of him and his father. Dumbstruck, Frieza makes several different efforts to kill the youth, such as energy blasts, each of which is parried easily (this occurs only in the anime while the youth wasted no time and killed Frieza after a single attack in the manga. Also, Gohan implies that Frieza was holding back 50% of his power in the manga whereas the anime has Frieza going all out). He then plays his trump card in the form of a Supernova (a Death Ball ten times the size of the one that destroyed Planet Namek). Even this is nonchalantly brushed away, until a mortified Frieza causes it to detonate with another shot of ki. Thinking him dead, both father and son are stunned when the youth fires a Burning Attack out of nowhere. Fuming, Frieza becomes oblivious to his opponent's position, and is surprised and sliced in half by the Saiyan youth before being cut to pieces and then vaporized with an energy blast, King Cold meets a similar fate, with the youth obliterating him with the God Breaker when the tyrant tries to attack him. Despite this, the common myth throughout the universe remains that Goku defeated Frieza on Namek. In the alternate future timelines of Future Trunks and Cell, it is implied that Future Goku used Instant Transmission to teleport to Earth and killed Future Frieza and Future King Cold instead of Future Trunks.

Frieza persisted in the Other World's Hell (HFIL), participating in a bid (along with the Ginyu Force, his father and Cell) to take the place over- however, they were defeated by Goku and Pikkon. Frieza cheered on Majin Buu during his final battle with Super Saiyan 3 Goku.

Super

In the years afterwards, Frieza remained trapped in Hell where he was within a cocoon suspended on a tree branch where his mind fixated on his defeat at the hands of the Super Saiyans. During this time, he was constantly annoyed by the angel of hell who would sing and play their music around him with Frieza unable to do anything to stop them. Such was his fate for fourteen years when one of his commanders in the Frieza Force named Sorbet along with a warrior named Tagoma went to Earth in order to retrieve the Dragon Balls. With the aid of Pilaf's gang, they recovered the wishing granting balls and used them to summon Frieza back to the world of the living. However, the nature of his death meant that he was restored in pieces as he had been left in this state due to the Super Saiyan's sword at the time of his demise. However, this was not an issue for Sorbet who recovered all the pieces of his emperor and took them to his ship as the Frieza Force had created a new form of medical machines that were able to restore their master fully even in his current condition. The regeneration machines were ultimately able to restore him fully to his first form without the need of any cybernetics. Upon awakening, he dreamed of avenging his defeat at the hands of the Saiyans and was briefed on the events that occurred since his death. Afterward, he announces to his soldiers that he will not be satisfied until the Super Saiyans (Goku and Future Trunks) have both been killed. Sorbet tries to protest that they need Frieza's ability to rule to restore the Frieza Force due to it growing unstable, but Frieza silences him with a glare. Tagoma then tries to back Sorbet up by suggesting that Frieza put his grudge against the Saiyans behind him and focus on reconstituting his empire. Angry at Tagoma's suggestion to leave the Saiyans alone, Frieza shot Tagoma with ki blasts instead of killing him, because he considered it boring to kill him quickly. Frieza is then informed by Sorbet that Goku's power has surpassed that of even Majin Buu, which is far more than Frieza could have imagined. But due to him being a prodigy, Frieza believes that through four months of serious training, he will be able to reach a level of power high enough to wipe out the Saiyans in the blink of an eye. For the next four months, Frieza trained vigorously, sometimes using Tagoma as a training partner. During training sessions with Tagoma, Frieza would beat him within an inch of his life and then have him go heal up for the next days of training, allowing Frieza to both get stronger and master his torturing-type fighting style to allow him to fight Goku for as long as possible without killing him, to cause the Saiyan as much pain as possible.

After all that time passed, Frieza and his forces eventually reach Earth, and he gets excited about exacting his revenge on the Saiyans. As they are about to land, Frieza begins laughing gleefully at his chance at revenge. After landing on Earth, he fires a Death Beam at North City, completely wiping it out. Frieza then encounters the Z Fighters, who have gathered to try and resist him. Frieza becomes irritated upon realizing that Goku has yet to arrive when he recognizes Krillin as the person he killed on Namek. The tyrant scornfully remarks that the Dragon Balls can revive the powerful and the pathetic before receiving some scathing remarks from Bulma, who had never seen him in person until now. Bulma pleads for some time so that Goku to arrive, but he gives them only ten seconds. Not interested in fighting without his nemesis, Frieza has his army of 1,000 soldiers engage the Z Fighters. When Sorbet attempts to give orders to the soldiers, Frieza flicks him away and instead has the soldiers all aim for Krillin as a joke - offering a planet to whomever kills him. Frieza comments on Gohan's abilities as a fighter, noting with disgust that the boy shares his father's morals. As the fight draws on, Frieza dismisses his troops as a disgrace to his name and threatens to kill Sorbet as punishment for his poor leadership, prompting the diminutive commander to send Shisami into battle. The hulking warrior quickly pulls Gohan into a bear hug in attempt to crush him, but Tagoma blasts the duo from behind in an attempt to kill the enemy's strongest warrior. Intrigued, the tyrant then agrees to appoint Tagoma as supreme commander of his forces if he wipes out the Z Fighters. He then proceeds to watch the battle unfold until Gotenks arrives and injures Tagoma. Gotenks prepares to fight Frieza, only to defuse shortly thereafter. Frieza notes Goten's resemblance to Goku, and Trunks resemblance to Future Trunks, who had sliced him in half. He grows angry at how the Saiyans have multiplied and orders Tagoma to wipe them out. Shortly afterwards, Frieza is approached by Captain Ginyu, who has switched bodies with Tagoma while he was feeling pain on the ground. The captain explains his hardships throughout the years from being swapped into the body of a frog to arriving on Earth to Frieza's return. Frieza is happy that Ginyu is alive and once more in his service, but is unimpressed by Ginyu's fighting pose and asks him to be useful and wipe out the Z Fighters. Frieza watches with glee as his faithful servant decimates the Z Fighters, noting that he is stronger than Tagoma was. However, Ginyu is defeated when Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan, with Frieza expressing surprise that Goku's son was capable of obtaining the form. Though Gohan decides to spare his opponent, Frieza recalls that this scenario is identical to the last part of his battle with Goku on Namek and snaps, flying down to the battlefield in his hoverchair. Enraged, he dismisses Captain Ginyu and attacks Gohan with Death Beams while telling him to scream, beg for mercy, and run. After Gohan succumbs to his injuries and falls to the ground, Frieza attacks with a finishing Death Beam. Suddenly, Piccolo jumps in the way of Frieza's attack, taking the attack's full brunt, protecting Gohan. Frieza finds it very amusing when Gohan cries for Piccolo. When Bulma finally talks to Whis, he disallows Sorbet to kill her at the moment in hopes that she might bring Goku to Earth. When he does not come right away, Frieza allows Ginyu to fight and kill Goku's friends so that he can be entertained at the least, but then Gohan stands up to Frieza and powers up into his Super Saiyan form once more as a way to both protect everyone and raise his energy high enough to be detected by Goku. The power-up eventually tires him out completely, and Frieza once again decided to end his life.

Shortly thereafter, Goku and Vegeta appear on the battlefield, the former having used Instant Transmission to return to Earth. Goku quickly blocks the Death Beam before rounding on Frieza, the latter explaining how he returned to life whilst describing his excruciating experiences in Hell. He blames Goku for the suffering he had endured since their battle on Namek and states his desire for vengeance. Vegeta then kills Captain Ginyu, causing Frieza to recognizes the Saiyan Prince's increased strength, though he promises to kill him once Goku is dead. After talking about their recent training, Frieza decides to transform into his final form from the start to avoid making mistakes again and prepares himself to fight, his transformation vaporizing the rest of his soldiers in the process, leaving Sorbet as the sole survivor. They start their fight on the ground after powering up and then power up again during close combat. Frieza actually thanks Goku for making himself train to fight him at this level, but then gets angry again after remembering the pain he's been through. He plans to kill Krillin and Bulma with Ki blasts, but Goku and Vegeta show up at the last minute and deflect them. They then resume their fight and take it all the way above the clouds. Frieza tells Goku he attacked his friends so he can fight Goku at his angriest. After being beat around, Frieza fires a Golden Death Ball at Goku and he uses a Kamehameha to collide, causing an explosion. After a Ki blast barrage conflict, Vegeta shows up and fights Goku, which impresses Frieza and he questions his loyalty to him, though Frieza fires a blast at the two and tells Vegeta that he wants to fight Goku first. After he became irritated by Vegeta's continuous clapping, the Saiyan decides to take on the tyrant himself, only for the two of them to negotiate for them to fight each other after Frieza kills Goku. In the manga, the two fight and Goku has the advantage. He then goes on to blast Frieza with a Kamehameha, prompting the tyrant to announce that he is going to reveal his further evolution. Frieza then witnesses Goku transform into his Super Saiyan Blue form. Frieza tries to knock out Goku from behind to gauge his power, but Goku catches this attack with his fist, prompting Frieza into finally transforming himself into Golden Frieza, despite his own warnings. After saying goodbye in advance, Frieza reinitiated his fight with Goku and he has the upper hand at first, but Goku blocks all of Frieza's upcoming energy attacks which results in an energy clash that lasts a while and causes a blinding explosion.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Frieza was a male extraterrestrial humanoid with a tail whose form varied depending on his power level.

For a time, he came to be considered the strongest fighter in Universe 7. This was to the extent that he was feared by King Kai who told Goku not to fight him.

It was said that he took delight in other people's suffering and treated life as a disposable commodity. Frieza was shown to destroy home and took the lives of innocent peaceful loving people which even included children. He was said to had done this for his own amusement and personal gain. However, those that showed some promise as fighters were offered a place within his army and servitude under him.

Frieza was shown to have nothing but disdain for the Saiyan race as he considered them nothing more than primitive monkeys. He came to consider the talk of a Legendary Super Saiyan to had been a simple legend and myth.

He commented about Goku that he had never met a sentimental Saiyan before and that this weakness would be his downfall.

It was said that he had a great fear of the God of Destruction Beerus. In fact, his father had told him to never challenge two figures in the universe with these being Beerus and Majin Buu.

Frieza's father was the great King Cold (コルド大だい王おう Korudo Daiō, lit. "Great King Cold") who headed their clan and their mighty empire in Universe 7. Prior to his fight with Goku, he claimed that no one had ever hurt him since his loving parents. Though never shown seeking to depose King Cold, he neither was shown any particular love or attachment to his father. In fact, he scoffed at the idea of his troops using the Dragon Balls to resurrect him with Frieza instead looking to rule his empire alone.

Powers and abilities

Such was his strength that he was considered one of the most powerful mortal warriors in Universe 7 and the multiverse as a whole. It was said that he was born with such incredible energy and talent that he did not need to train a single day in his entire life. Frieza initially lacked the ability to sense ki and instead relied on a scouter in order to find his quarry.

In battle, he was shown to use his tail to a high degree of proficiency in close-quarter combat.

It was shown that he had a degree of telekinesis allowing him to move objects with his mind alone. He was able to lift entire mountains with his mind or rip large chunks of rocks from the ground that he levitated around himself which he could throw at a target. In one case, he managed to pull a target into the air and with but a gesture caused them to explode.

He was shown to have the power to manipulate ki and channel it into a variety of feats. For combat, he used this to fire energy based attacks through a variety of means. He could fire energy blasts from his eyes at his enemies or shoot them from his hands.

Frieza had the ability to transform into various states where his lower forms were used to conserve energy. He was able to increase his power level by transforming into another one of his states that unlocked his power even further.

He later came to gain the ability to sense ki which meant he required no equipment to determine power readings in others. In time, his control over his ability increased to the point that he could fire multiple ki beams from his hands and arranged them as a cage around a person. Contact with the beams was enough to cause anyone intense pain due to the energy running through it. Though able to create this cage, Frieza was only able to maintain it for a set period of time.

An aspect of his biology mean that he could survive in any environment even in the vacuum of space. Furthermore, he was able to survive the loss of numerous limbs and parts of his body without dying from his injures. However, he lacked the means of restoring lost limbs and either had to him them regenerated through machines or fit cybernetic replacements.

Through training, he managed to undergo the Ultimate Evolution (究極進化 Kyūkyoku Shinka) of his race allowing him to attain a superpowered state that he called Golden Frieza (ゴールデンフリーザ Gōruden Furīza). He managed to attain this form after a short time of training but he was only able to keep this state for a short period of time. Frieza came to improve his endurance allowing him to stay in that state for a longer period of time. He achieved this after his previous death where whilst trapped in Hell he began to meditate and fixate in defeating Goku. After encountering a Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Frieza decided to use it to continually train over a 10 year period to hone his fighting strength. In that time, he came to unlock another evolution allowing him to attain a more powerful form called Black Frieza (ブラックフリーザ Burakku Furīza).

Among the techniques known to him included:

  • Imprisonment Ball (懲役ボール Chōeki Bōru) :
  • Death Beam (デスビーム Desubīmu) : the Frieza Beam was a powerful and lethal finger beam that was one of his signature attacks. This involved him extends his right arm and firing a small, thin, very fast and concentrated laser-like beam of ki from his index finger, which barrelled down and pierced through his opponent. He was able to fire the attack very quickly whilst maintaining a precise aim.
  • Death Ball (デスボール Desu Bōru) : the Death Ball was a blast attack whereby Frieza was able to light a spark of energy on his index finger that grew in size and power where it could become into a small moon that he could throw at his target. Such was the strength of this ability that he could use it to destroy a planet or use it as part of a last ditch effort to destroy an enemy.
  • Death Cannon (デスキャノン Desu Kyanon) :
  • Nova Strike (ノヴァストライク Novua Sutoraiku) :
  • Death Saucer (追跡気円斬 Tsuiseki Kienzan, lit. "Tracking Spirit Circle Cut") : Kienzan Discs

He commanded an army of individuals known as the Frieza Force (フリーザ軍ぐん Furīza Gun) that were an intergalactic organization which conquered worlds to be sold for profit.

Notes

  • Freiza was created by Akira Toriyama where he featured in the Dragon Ball universe.
  • As noted in Kanzeshuu, an interview with Toriyama had him note that, "Freeza is what you might call a mutated life-form. Strictly speaking, Freeza’s father is a mutant with an abnormally high battle power. And, born from his father alone4, still in strong possession of the mutant traits, was Freeza. Accordingly, even saying “Freeza’s race”, these two are the only ones who possess an abnormal [level of] battle power and cruelty."

Alternate Versions

  • In Dragon Ball GT, an alternate version of Frieza was shown to exist in a reality that was set many years after the Majin Buu Saga. He was shown to be trapped in Frieza where he along with Cell were among those that sought to be freed when Artificial 17 came online who freed the trapped evil souls in that realm. Seeking to stop the plot, Goku went to Hell only to be confronted by Frieza and Cell but the pair were easily defeated by him leading to their defeat and them remaining trapped in that dimension.
